Thanks. Any idea about average GMAT score for Focus edition?
mohitkasera just a reflection on my last year candidates- one of my mentees with a slightly differentiated background (but still an Indian engineer) had abysmally low GRE score and academic records. His admit came as a surprise because I have known IIM A to be extremely focused on academics, and I have seen some exceptional profiles with average GMAT scores and low GPAs get rejected. This brings up an interesting point about whether GRE candidates with decent profiles have an advantage.  To decide what is a good score for you, first evaluate what unique aspect you bring to the IIM A  PGPX cohort. If you are from an overrepresented category such as the IT/tech male pool, look at your college grades and then set your GMAT goals. For the aforementioned category, you must do better than the average (by atleast 20-30 points on the GMAT).

Feel free to speak should you want professional guidance to crack IIM A admit

Hello,
Do IIM’s have sectional cut-off for GMAT?

I have a GMAT classic score of 700 (Q48,V37,Awa5,IR6)

AK24 The schools never disclose their sectional cutoffs or if they have them. But the general expectation with competitive pool on the older GMAT version was to have around the 75th percentile on the quant section. That came to around a Q49. Since you are close to this for Quant and your verbal score is balanced, you should be good. Make sure your work experience, essays, and interview carry the weight of your GMAT and not the other way around. Feel free to seek advice

While as such there’s no sectional cutoff, but they do have mentioned on the website that ideally both the section’s should be above 70th percentile. It is stated as "Candidates are advised to aim for a score at or above the 70th-75th percentile for both the quantitative and verbal sections of the GMAT".

I have a 700 in GMAT. But the quantity score is 45 which is only 57 percentile. Does that mean 700 is not good enough

Sorry, I meant quant score is 45

Unless you have a strong academic background to offset the QA score, then it surely won’t be good enough. But again, it wont be a gone deal if other aspects of your profile are good enough.

Hi @harshita98999The adcoms look at these factors to determine your potential:

  1. Undergrad academics (Tier 1 college undergrads can get some brownie points, but not necessary that all Tier 1 undergrads are able to compete with Tier 2 undergrad candidates in terms of career progression. This levels the playing field).
  2. Career growth progression (how you have grown in your career year on year, what incremental responsibilities, awards).
  3. GMAT/GRE.
  4. Overall personality, ECs/interview performance.
The importance of organization brand name is subjective. What you have achieved in a company is more important than just the organization name. However, very early-stage startups that have shown little growth during the time the MBA applicant worked there are seen as less favorable feeders than better-known startups and established organizations. Adcoms benchmark the candidate's success against the growth of the organization, therefore, more credible organizations have a better record of feeding into top MBA programs.

Hi! The organization name doesn't matter much, but the impact you have made at workplace matters. Colleges such as IITs, DTU, top colleges in each state can create that first impression, but a lot depends on how you performed in the college. If you are 9 pointer, then it's all taken care of, but if you are not then you can easily cover it with a good GMAT performance. Sharing a key insight - majority of the candidates in IIMs, ISB, or any top-college are not from IITs, DTU, or top state colleges :)

Hi! It can be slightly tricky because at an overall level your score is well above average, but quant score may raise eyebrows a bit. If you are confident and can take GMAT again for improving the Quant score, then nothing like it. If you can't then can you share your college acads? Plus, you can also cover it using your work experience. Can you share some details about work experience as well?

T4Star   It completely depends on the profile. As I mentioned earlier somewhere on this thread, in the last intake, I saw some candidates with very low scores get through with some exceptional elements in their profiles. If you feel your GMAT score will carry the weight of your candidacy, target a score upwards of 685. If you feel the other areas will carry the weight of your candidacy, a score upwards of 655 is also fine.

Feel free to discuss your specific situation.
