don’t think GMAT is a factor once you get an invite. experts can comment?

Hi, I got a past IIM A admit and student to interview a prof who sat on the panel this year. Sharing a few insights from the discussion, hoping this helps others. I know there may be more to the selection process than what the prof highlighted but this is exactly as it came.

1.The GMAT score is the most important for shortlisting an application for an interview. (The cutoff was not disclosed.)
2.The interview is very important for selection.
3.The interview tests basic facets like:
a. Is the person cut out for the rigorous IIMA curriculum?
b. Have they been working with one company for a long duration?
c. How much knowledge of the industry do they have, and does it demonstrate their sincerity and involvement in what they do? (Important for a future leader.)
The professor gave an example from the R1 interview: a person at IOCL working for the last 8 years had zero clue about the Indian and global oil industry and trends. Result- rejected.
d. What skills do they bring to the class, and how will they value skills and expertise of others in the classroom?
e. For people far from academics for a long time or for non-math background folks: How comfortable are they with numbers, and will they be able to do basic finance and analytical thinking?
f. The average work experience is around 7-8 years, so how does the applicant compare?

I was asked what my immediate goal is and what value I bring, if selected. I answered the immediate goal part well but then the panel posed a question, the conversation drifted to other topics and, I realised later, I did not speak at all about what value I bring. But I have elaborated this point well in my essay. So I've been wondering whether my essay answers that question for the panel.

I was also curious whether the panel gets to go through our entire application and essays. If yes, why do they ask a question that's already been answered in the essay.

But surprisingly he got an admit
So I believe it’s a holistic opinion they make

I don’t think GMAT contributes more than 30% to final results, only thing where it’s important is during shortlisting for the interview

after hearing this story, I am more sure I want to go to IIMA

He had a stellar profile but a 680 GMAT, worked internationally, also with a PSU, IIT graduate!

@RiyaJain69 yes, the professors have access to the applications, and they go through them thoroughly. Many applicants have reported being cross questioned about something they wrote in their essays.
You should not think too much about missing the opportunity to address the contribution part. The panel is assessing overall suitability and readiness, and how you will contribute will be clear from your answers to other questions. And plus its pretty common for the panel to interrupt the candidates so dont you worry

wow! I would take it with a pinch of salt because rudeness is the number one reason why a school would reject an applicant. I have easily seen cases very closely where applicants have bombed the interviews but still got through, but never one where an applicant misbehaved and still got through. Applicants are generally more self-critical when they play the interview in retrospect, but probably the pgpx panel got what they wanted from him in those 10 minutes. The pgpx interview format is overtly critical, so it may have seemed the panel was throwing him out. The IIM A profs IMO are not interested in beating around the bush once they have formed an opinion.
