Hi,
The ISB application form this year does not require you to add the class 10th details (even class 12th grade was not required till a few days back but now I see the section added in the form, so it is required), so we can start from that context.

Your 12th grades are good. The Btech aggregate is not that strong but a strong GMAT score would help here.

Since you have multiple promotions and volunteering experience we can assume you would have good ingredients for a strong application. Focus on your story and the GMAT score.

All the best!

Undergrad score is quite low @sharathskal (wonder why?). Thankfully you have a decent GMAT score to make up for it. Curious to know why you did not apply last year?

Am not convinced about your Post-MBA goals; I think they need some brainstorming.

Hey! You have good acads at 10th and 12th level, but the undergrad % is average. For that reason you should try to score a 675+ on GMAT. This will help your profile standout. Your work experience is pretty good and you should highlight leadership roles/key initiatives along with subtly mentioning how these things helped you get the promotions. You need to have a solid answer to why MBA and how ISB will help you achieve your short-term and long-term goals. This will be a deal breaker as a lot of aspirants miss on justifying this well in their essays or interviews.

We have 40+ mentors from ISB on our platform IvyCrackers and few of them are on ISB admissions interview panel. You can book a complimentary 30-mins call with us and one of the interview panelists will evaluate your profile in detail. In this call, we will delve deep into your profile, help you build an overall strategy for your ISB application, and answer any questions you have about ISB.

Hey! Your undergrad acads could have posed some challenges but you covered it really well with a solid GMAT score. You have stellar work experience and RPA is something that's not very common (not really unique but it will help sail your boat). Leading 4 projects is something that you must highlight really well in one of the essays and you will get a lot of questions around it in interview as well. You can build a story around TAS failed attempts (for essay 1) and what kind of learnings you had from it (self-introspection).The NGO experience, especially the chapter leader, can come in handy.

You will have to choose one - MBB or tech consulting. The two are drastically different career options and looking at career journey, I would suggest you to stick with tech consulting (atleast from essay/interview perspective). Additionally, your undergrad grades can become a hindrance for MBB.

Last year, the volunteering experience and the leadership credentials at work weren’t strong enough I felt, also, I got to 730 just a week or so before Round 2 closed. While I know that my undergrad score can make scholarship hard or impossible, still wanted to have a shot at it, so did not apply in round 3.

Regarding the GPA, I studied in a university where the top 1 percent used to average <8.5 GPA. Still I was very immature, spent a lot of time on mediocre projects and on events in the college. Also, some mengal health struggles came in the way then.

Coming to post MBA goals, While what I want is either consulting or General managent, tech consulting would seem more realistic I thought based on my experience so far.

And, Will I be able to take the sting off of the GPA a little by pointing out that I cleared GATE in CSE, despite having studied ECE for engineering. Like angling it as an aptitude misalignment?

Dear sharathskal,

Your profile presents a mix of strong attributes and areas for improvement:

Strengths:

Academic Background: Excellent performance in 10th (10 CGPA) and 12th (88.4%) demonstrates a solid academic foundation.

GMAT Score: A high GMAT score of 730 (Q48, V42, IR 5.5, AWA 5) showcases strong analytical and verbal skills.

Professional Experience: Six years at TCS as a Robotic Process Automation Architect with a fast-track promotion to early mid-management is impressive. Leading four projects and mentoring junior developers highlights leadership and technical expertise. Reaching the final interview for Tata
Administrative Service indicates strong potential.

Volunteering and Leadership: Significant involvement with an NGO, where you’ve progressed to a chapter leader role, managing 70 volunteers and impacting 120 students, underscores your commitment to social causes and leadership skills.
Clear Post-MBA Goals: Targeting consulting roles with MBB or technology consulting shows a well-defined career path.

Areas to Focus On:

Undergraduate Performance: A relatively low CGPA of 6.91 in engineering could raise concerns about academic consistency. Address this in your application, perhaps by highlighting any external factors or emphasizing your professional achievements as compensatory strengths.

Workplace Achievements: While your role at TCS is impressive, provide specific examples of the impact of your projects and leadership on the organization. Quantify achievements to showcase tangible results.

Leadership in Extracurriculars: Your school and college leadership roles are valuable but dated. Emphasize recent leadership experiences and how they’ve prepared you for an MBA and future roles.

Reason for MBA: Clearly articulate why you now believe an MBA is the right step ? Is this something you realized after going through the rigor of the TAS application? If yes, bring that across in your narrative. Connect your motivation with your career aspirations and how ISB will help bridge this gap.

By focusing on these areas and leveraging your strengths, you can present a compelling and balanced application to ISB.

I am an ISB alum,CO15, and will be happy to guide you in your application journey. Feel free to reach out as and when you need help.

Cheers and Best of Luck !

Hi Vishwesh08

Below is the brief summary of your profile evaluation:

Strengths of your profile include:

1. Work experience: Your diverse roles in startups, sales, and strategy demonstrate versatility and professional growth.

2. Leadership potential: Managing a team of over 20 and overseeing a P&L strategy are indicative of strong leadership capabilities.

3. Strategic thinking: Your roles at BYJU's and Ola emphasize your strategic planning and problem-solving abilities.

4. Entrepreneurial streak: Establishing a startup indicates initiative and business savvy.

GMAT score: A score of 615 is respectable, but targeting 665 could significantly bolster your application to top-tier institutions like ISB and INSEAD.

Essays:

1. Quantifiable achievements: Emphasize measurable successes in your work history, such as percentage increases in revenue or specific projects that had quantifiable outcomes.

2. Impact in current role: Expand on the influence you've had at Ola. Have you driven substantial growth in non-scooter revenue streams?

Motivation for MBA: Beyond networking and skill enhancement, articulate a more defined and ambitious long-term objective that aligns with your career goals post-MBA.

sharathskal   Hey, your GMAT is decent, but is there room for improvement? Six years is a long time to be in an organization in the core IT category. The adcoms would want to know what kept you motivated to continue—money, promotions, or learning perhaps? Proof of promotions is good, but if I am honest, you are yet to find the hook in your application. I like your NGO experience, but I would like to see more "initiative/ leadership" than just "participation." Volunteering is an indirect sales tactic that MBA applicants use to show they are not just worker bees but care about other human beings. If you think this could be the highlight (or one of the highlights) of your profile, try to capture unique details in your narrative—location, history, challenges, and purpose of the projects. Complementing skills should be strategic and find application in some part of the ISB student chapter. Your goals strategy is all over the place. I cannot see clearly why MBB would want to hire you (maybe I overlooked a unique skill). Technology consulting is more reasonable but still requires deeper discussion.

Feel free to connect for an exploratory call with me.

Best wishes

@sharathskalHey, your GMAT is decent, but is there room for improvement?

Best wishes

I can give GMAT another shot in a few months’ time, if it feels necessary.

Can show a YoY hike averaging 25 percent through the 6 years, rarely seen among TCSers. The organisation did not give me a strong enough reason to switch. Besides, work in TCS offered the opportunity to make it to the best LDP opportunity in the country through TAS. Unfortunately couldn’t make the cut as I exhausted the attempts, although did make it till the final interview round, only a handful make it till that stage in Tata group

Also, thank you for the insights and feedback. Will try to align/angle things in my profile towards one common goal
