People get into B-schools after working in family businesses all the time. I don't get what the anxiety is all about unless, of course, the candidate is faking the employment or has delivered very little in terms of impact. I have seen people not add family business at all on their resumes for fear of being judged. Please take pride in your work and do not overthink this aspect. Just keep in mind that you will need to provide very credible proof of your capabilities in a professional setup, and references from family members will not help. If you have a business where you work closely with clients in big corporates, the word of these clients will be considered highly credible. I also want to add that people who come from very affluent family businesses also get extra attention from the adcoms because these candidates will become future business leaders that B-schools would want to be associated with.

Best wishes

Thank you experts for your kind replies !

Another follow-up question, what it takes to get a 50-100% scholarship at ISB?
What matters most - Diversity/ Academics/ Work-ex/ Essays/ GMAT?
Also, does application round matters when it comes to scholarships ?

Regards,

Hey! Scholarship depends on how badly ISB wants you to be the part of cohort which, in turn, is dependent on all the factors you have mentioned. Application round does matter (higher chances in R1 and then R2).

Hmm...obviously it will not be a great idea to mention internal reasons in the application shivanks.

Make sure your post-MBA goals are well thought-of.

About to give gmat
target score is 645+
With six years of experience in prominent firms and a solid academic background, you are on a good path towards your MBA journey. Here are the next steps to help you strengthen your application and achieve your goals:

Target Score: Aim for a score higher than 645 to strengthen your application, especially for top business schools. A score of 700+ will significantly enhance your profile.
Preparation Resources: Utilize GMAT prep courses, online resources, and practice tests to improve your score. Focus on areas where you need the most improvement, whether it’s quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, or analytical writing.
Study Plan: Create a structured study plan, dedicating a few hours each day to GMAT prep. Consider joining a study group or hiring a tutor if needed.
Self-Assessment and Goal Setting:

Career Goals: Clearly define your short-term and long-term career goals. Determine how an MBA will help you transition from your current role to your desired position.
School Selection: Research MBA programs that align with your career goals, values, and preferences. Consider factors like program reputation, faculty, alumni network, location, and specialization in areas of interest.
Application Components:

Essays: Start drafting your essays, focusing on your career progression, achievements, and why you want to pursue an MBA. Highlight your unique experiences at the Big 4 and JPMorgan & Chase, and how they have prepared you for an MBA.
Letters of Recommendation: Identify potential recommenders who can speak to your professional achievements, work ethic, and potential for success in an MBA program. Provide them with specific examples and context to help them write strong, detailed recommendations.
Resume: Update your resume to reflect your accomplishments, leadership roles, and key projects. Use metrics and quantifiable results to demonstrate your impact.
Networking and Research:

Alumni and Current Students: Reach out to alumni and current students of your target MBA programs to gain insights into their experiences. Attend MBA fairs, webinars, and information sessions to learn more about the programs and build connections.
School Visits: If possible, visit the campuses of your target schools to get a feel for the environment and culture. This can also help you in your application essays and interviews.
Extracurricular Activities and Leadership:

Volunteer Work: If you’re not already involved in extracurricular activities, consider joining a professional or community organization. Leadership roles in these activities can enhance your application.
Hobbies and Interests: Highlight any hobbies or interests that showcase your well-rounded personality and soft skills.
Interview Preparation:

Mock Interviews: Practice common MBA interview questions and conduct mock interviews with friends, mentors, or professional coaches. Prepare to discuss your career journey, goals, and why you’ve chosen specific MBA programs.
STAR Method: Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your answers, making them clear and impactful. By focusing on these next steps, you can enhance your MBA application and position yourself as a strong candidate. Aim to present a cohesive narrative that ties together your academic background, professional achievements, and future aspirations.

Best of luck with your GMAT preparation and MBA application process. If you need further assistance or have any questions, please feel free to reach out at preppie (admin@teampreppie.com)

Hi. I am looking for a profile evaluation.

Class X: 93.8%
Class XII: 95.2%
Undergrad: 8.8 GPA
Institute: NSUT (ECE branch)
GMAT: 735

I have just graduated from NSUT and started my job as a technical consultant at PwC a couple of weeks ago. I applied to ISB YLP, cleared round 1, and am now preparing my application for round 2.

I want to know my chances of getting into ISB since I have zero work experience and don’t have any significant extracurricular activities.
You have an impressive academic record and a strong GMAT score, which positions you well for competitive MBA programs like ISB’s Young Leaders Program (YLP). Here are some steps and insights to enhance your application for ISB and increase your chances of admission: Next Steps:
Round 2 Application Preparation:

Essays: Focus on writing compelling essays that highlight your academic achievements, leadership potential, and career aspirations. Since you have limited work experience, emphasize your technical skills, any significant projects or internships during your undergrad, and what you’ve achieved so far at PwC, even if it’s only been a short time.
Career Goals: Clearly articulate your short-term and long-term career goals and how the ISB YLP can help you achieve them. Be specific about why you want to pursue an MBA at this stage in your career.
Highlighting Extracurricular Activities:

Relevant Experiences: Even if you don’t have significant extracurricular activities, mention any relevant experiences that demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and initiative. This can include project leadership, technical competitions, student organizations, or any voluntary work you have done.
Personal Interests: If you have hobbies or personal interests that demonstrate qualities like discipline, creativity, or persistence, include these in your application to provide a well-rounded picture of yourself.
Letters of Recommendation:

Obtain strong recommendations from professors, mentors, or supervisors who can vouch for your academic excellence, technical skills, and potential for leadership. Since your work experience is limited, academic recommenders can be particularly valuable.
Prepare for the Interview:

Mock Interviews: Conduct mock interviews to practice discussing your academic achievements, why you want to pursue an MBA, and how you plan to contribute to the ISB community. Be ready to explain why you believe an early MBA will benefit your career trajectory.
STAR Method: Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your answers, making them clear and impactful.
Building a Strong Narrative:

Storytelling: Create a cohesive narrative that ties together your academic excellence, early career start, and aspirations. Explain why the YLP is the right step for you and how you plan to leverage the program to achieve your career goals.
Leadership Potential: Even if you lack extensive work experience, focus on instances where you demonstrated leadership, initiative, and the ability to drive results, whether in academic projects or personal endeavors.
Leverage Your Network:

Current Students and Alumni: Connect with current students and alumni from ISB to gain insights into the program and understand what qualities the admissions committee values. Their experiences and tips can help you strengthen your application.
Additional Learning Opportunities:

Certifications and Courses: If time permits, consider pursuing relevant certifications or online courses that can enhance your technical and business skills. This demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and can make your profile more robust. Your strong academic background and GMAT score are significant strengths. While your work experience is limited, focusing on your academic achievements, early professional start, and clearly articulated career goals will be key to making a strong case for your admission to ISB’s YLP.

Best of luck with your application preparation for Round 2. If you need any further assistance or have more questions, please feel free to reach out to preppie (admin@teampreppie.com)

Hey @MacT750
To enhance your MBA application, aim for a GMAT score of 720+ or a GRE score of 320+ (160+ in both sections). This will complement your strong academic record and 5 years of work experience in the oil and gas sector, positioning you competitively for top MBA programs.

any tips for profile building for someone who will be applying for isb ylp next year? I am a departmental football sports captain , have 2-3 research papers published on AI/ML. doing various certificate courses and have done 2-3 interships online and 1 in hybrid mode. what more can i add into my profile . i am from a science background
You already have a strong foundation with your leadership role in sports, research publications, internships, and certifications. Here are some strategic next steps to further strengthen your profile for the ISB Young Leaders Program (YLP). Academic and Professional Enhancements:

Advanced Certifications: Continue pursuing advanced and relevant certifications in AI/ML or other areas of interest. Consider certifications from recognized institutions like Coursera, edX, or specific industry certifications (e.g., Google AI, Microsoft Azure AI).
Skill Development: Enhance your technical and soft skills. This could include learning new programming languages, project management skills, or communication and leadership training.
Extracurricular Activities and Leadership:

Leadership Roles: Take on additional leadership roles, either within your department or in external organizations. This can include leading a student club, organizing events, or starting an initiative related to your field of interest.
Community Service: Engage in community service or social impact projects. Volunteering for NGOs, participating in social entrepreneurship, or leading community initiatives can showcase your commitment to social responsibility and leadership outside of academics and sports.
Professional Experience:

Internships: Seek out additional internships, particularly in companies or roles that align with your long-term career goals. Internships with well-known organizations can add significant value to your profile.
Projects: Undertake independent projects or collaborate with professors/industry professionals on impactful projects. Focus on projects that have tangible results or contribute to your field in a meaningful way.
Networking and Mentorship:

Mentorship: Find mentors who can guide you through your professional and academic journey. Mentors can provide valuable advice, help you navigate challenges, and offer recommendations.
Networking: Attend industry conferences, seminars, and webinars related to AI/ML and other areas of interest. Networking with professionals in your field can provide insights and open up new opportunities.
Application Preparation:

Essays and Personal Statement: Start brainstorming and drafting your essays early. Focus on your unique experiences, leadership roles, and how these have shaped your career goals. Highlight your passion for AI/ML, your achievements, and why you want to pursue the YLP at ISB.
Letters of Recommendation: Identify potential recommenders who can vouch for your academic and professional capabilities. Provide them with specific examples and context to help them write strong, detailed recommendations.
Interview Preparation:

Mock Interviews: Practice for interviews by conducting mock interviews with friends, mentors, or professional coaches. Be prepared to discuss your academic achievements, leadership roles, career aspirations, and why you are a good fit for the ISB YLP.
STAR Method: Use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your answers, making them clear and impactful.
Personal Development:

Reading and Research: Stay updated with the latest developments in AI/ML and your field of interest. Reading books, research papers, and industry news can help you stay informed and add depth to your knowledge.
Hobbies and Interests: Maintain a balance between academics, professional growth, and personal interests. Engage in hobbies and activities that showcase a well-rounded personality. By focusing on these next steps, you can further enhance your profile and position yourself as a strong candidate for the ISB Young Leaders Program. Your leadership roles, research achievements, and proactive approach to learning will be key in presenting a compelling application.

Best of luck with your preparation for the ISB YLP. If you need further assistance or have any questions, please feel free to reach out at https://www.preppie.in (email - admin@teampreppie.com)
