Hello
varunkasat2801,
From Metallurgy with Finance to Marketing – you will most definitely have to provide a rationale behind this seemingly drastic change. Having said that I am sure, you can demonstrate some of the transferrable skillsets from undergrad that you applied in your professional work – primarily finance knowhow.
Your 10
th and 12
th scores and GMAT Score are at par with ISB’s typical avg. So, no red flags there. As far as professional career is concerned, since you made multiple role changes in your tenure, you need to showcase how each role was a stepping stone to your overall pursuit of learning the art of customer influencing – essentially something that gives a more Umbrella POV.
I don’t see any sparks in terms of Extracurricular endeavors. However, you can carve a compelling narrative around the aspect of freelance sports content writer, it can potentially make a stronger impression.
While you haven’t mentioned your career goals, I am sure you have thought about a definitive career path that builds on top of your current experience. It is important for you to show how MBA from ISB will complement your existing soft & hard skills to help you succeed in your immediate post MBA career.
Now will try to take a stab at answering your specific Questions as well
1. Is the GMAT score competitive or do I need to maybe attempt one more time.
CA: It is competitive. You don’t need to retake.
2. Should I write down my reasons for shifting from metallurgy to marketing immediately post MBA, somewhere in my essay?
CA: While you should definitely clear the air around this seemingly drastic shift, do make sure that this is mentioned as part of a comprehensive storyline / narrative. The reasoning shouldn’t seem like a standalone justification.
Ex. During my undergrad, as the sports captain, I had to make sure any inter college events held in our college got a lot participation and hence I worked closely with designers, social media volunteers etc. and saw the impact of a well thought about marketing strategy (participation grew 30% compared to previous year). This incident motivated me to pursue Marketing as a career
Note: The above is a completely hypothetical scenario I have mentioned to give you some queue around how you should be thinking in terms of storyboarding. Please refrain from using the above story AS-IS.
