Thank you MBAandBeyond in advance and thank you Nikhil for making this happen.

Here is my profile for your scrutiny:

Username - RogerMathew96
Country (current) - INDIA
Citizenship - INDIA
Industry - Agriculture
Function/Role -

2018-2020: Procurements Executive. Deccan Fine Chemicals; a mid sized (5000Cr) Agrochemical company. Appointed as team lead in the next year with a substantial hike and bonus. Responsibilities included overseeing a team of 6, reporting the teams' day to day progress to the Manager, planning and delivery of RM's for 3 products, ensuring 0 stock outs etc. Also took care of the requirements for the R&D team. Usually entailed procuring samples from across the globe on a regular basis.

2020 - 2022+ - Started working in the family business. Varsha Bioscience is a micro/small scale company involved in the manufacture and marketing of Bio-agri inputs (Biofertilizers, biopesticides etc) in India from the past 19 years.

2020-21 - Procurement lead. Streamlined the system, added new and better vendors while simultaneously reducing purchase costs by 10L that very year.

2021 - Supply Chain Manager. Removed non performing assets. Reduced time to dispatch orders from an average of 4 days to 2 days. Reduced % of product damaged in transport to 5% from 20% (w.r.t long distance loads) by opting for better packing (without increase in cost to company). Ensured tracking and customer intimation till the last mile. Warehouse upkeep and inventory management. Learnt the ropes with the help of 10-12 members in my team; ended up coordinating and managing them.

2021-2022- Business Development Manager. More of a sales executive+ B2B transactions + Digital marketing role.
Truth be told, it's more like eating 3 different scoops of icecream that usually don't go together instead of a single flavor tub like my previous roles. Visited agricultural markets (dealers and farmers) in 5 states so far. Ensured appointment of a few dealers. Brought to attention the problems faced by the dealers and company Sales Officers when dealing with our products in-field to the CEO of the company. Involved in B2B transactions with 3-4 companies (Rallis India, Coromandel etc). Improved product listings in Amazon.in resulting in slightly higher sales and currently developing a new website for the company.

Years of Work experience - Four

GMAT/GRE (mention with split) - Yet to take. Exam scheduled next month. Probable score would be in the 650-700 range. Please let me know if this sufficient

Target application round - R1

Post-MBA role targeted - CEO of Day to day operations.

Short-term goals - In 1-3 years:
1. Improve financial structure of the company (cashflow is varying and never stable)
2. Increase network of dealers across the country by 10 fold
3. Purchase new and better machinery
4. Improve interdepartmental communication
5. Help employees realize the company's goal and also their own true potential (both in personal and professional life).

Long-term goals - In 1-10 years:
1. Increase farmers income by helping them adopt organic cultivation (export value) and helping them export it.
2. Compete and dominate the Indian bio-agri inputs market. This is going to be a steep climb as MNC's like Bayer, Syngenta etc have major plans to enter the country's bio-agri input market. There are also domestic competitors
In 15 years: Start an own chain/label of organic produce and establish retail and online presence.

Extra-curriculars - Very few to be honest. Apart from 3 academic internships and a couple of skill certifications, I dont have much to show. Was the class representative for 2 years in UG. Was a core team member in our Dept's Agri-Fest.

Hi, RogerMathew96,

Thank you for your post!

First, I would like to say your profile looks quite good on the surface, and coming from a non-conventional MBA background, such as agriculture, will definitely secure points for diversity. About your GMAT, since you come from an overrepresented pool (in terms of country/continent specific), it would be best if you could score around 720+ in your GMAT, as it would provide an overall boost to your profile! Coming to your academics, I suggest you add your college GPA and a bit more about your statistics during your graduation and try to add any additional courses, certifications, and academic accolades to back your academic prowess.

About your work experience, you did extremely well mentioning all your roles & responsibilities in chronological order; however, rather than just mentioning about being a team lead, you need to back them up with substantial examples of leadership, excellence in the field, decision-making, and analytical skills in your tenure. Moreover, since you want to continue in a family business background, getting into an MBA school with a family business background poses a few challenges but no need to worry! Here is an article you could refer to, How to stand out in your MBA application with a family business background, this would most certainly help provide insights about how to approach your MBA application with a family business background. Also, you did switch roles multiple times in your tenure working in the same industry, so you would need to share the experiences by mentioning how your skill-set developed in each of these roles and how it helped you perform better in new roles!

Coming to ECAs, you need to add some relevant volunteering and community work! After that, try to give a brief account of your contribution, the challenges faced, leadership roles played, the impact generated, and the relevant skills developed through your ECAs so that it doesn't sound just like participation! You can also talk about any hobby you pursue or what you like to do in your free time apart from your work. I'm sure there will be something and do speak about it in your apps. Think of something you love to do and talk about because it will make your applications interesting. About your post-MBA goal, I must say, It's very rare for someone to put their vision in pen& paper so well! The framework is outstanding, and you did well interlinking your past experiences. Moreover, your post-MBA goal is also attached to a noble cause, so that would add extra points to your profile. Also, I would suggest you add all about any international experience/exposure as they are greatly valued at this stage. There are a few people who really have clear, unique motivations behind pursuing an MBA, and you seem to be one of them. Finally, be sure you specify how INSEAD will help fill the gaps in your profile and guide you to your life goals.

Overall, you have a strong profile and a shot at LBS if everything is done right. I believe your experience and post-MBA goals are your strongest assets. However, a lot can depend on your GMAT, and when targeting top B-schools, you need to understand that they are no short of stellar profiles; hence, you have to be clear on how an MBA can help you reach your goals and mention your motivation/driving force, your aspirations, and finally, how can you add diversity to the classroom being from an unconventional industry and you have relevant skills to be successful. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to LBS; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.

Hi, Shubhant,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Firstly, on the work front, I would advise you to get a bit more experience before applying for an MBA as the average work experience for top B-schools is about three or above three years. Moreover, since you come from a conventional overrepresented pool of candidates, I would suggest scoring around 720+ in your GMAT as it would boost your profile overall. You do have a relevant post-MBA goal; however, you need to make it more exhaustive so that it doesn't sound generic. For now, I suggest you work for a while, gain more experience, and don't leave any chance to get more international exposure/experience, and then maybe you can apply next year. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.
I wish you all the very best for your GMAT exam! :)

Hi, Justforfun0,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Considering your GMAT score, 760 terms is a decent score. We would like to know more about your past academic performance, including your GPA. However, your GMAT score is already exhibiting your academic excellence.

On the work front, six years of experience in IT and five years in the family business seem to be on a good note. Being a team leader in the IT industry highlights your leadership qualities. It would be best if you also stressed upon the instances where you were responsible for making any important decision that brought impact to your organization and business. However, we would like to know more about your work experiences, like roles and responsibilities while handling your family business. Do you have any international experience? LBS is happy to receive individuals with international experience. They prefer candidates who have lived and worked outside of their native nations or who have worked with colleagues, clients, and business partners from a range of locations.

Being a professional photographer and cricketer will add diversity to your profile. Make sure you talk about them. Regarding your post mba goals, you need to be clear and have a strong motivation behind pursuing an MBA from LBS. Overall your profile looks good. Considering your huge work experience, you can also look at Executive full-time MBA programs; LBS Sloan, Stanford MSx, MIT Sloan Fellows, and USC Ibear can be some great options. There are global mba programs as well, which have 11-12 years of work-ex, for example, Darden global EMBA and Columbia-EMBA global. These programs are designed especially for creating global leaders by providing a degree and international experience at the same time. If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further help you with shortlisting MBA programs; feel free to book a free session with us at your convenience.
I wish you all the very best for your GMAT exam! :)
