I had a 20-minute 1:1 with a first-year UNC student, but the call went on for 50 minutes. He told me that if you are in tech, go where you can get placed. Don’t get lured by a scholarship if you’re getting admit at any T15 school.
He said none of his batchmates have secured internships yet; he has tried many times with no luck so far, and the school doesn’t help much. He advised me to try Duke or even Georgia Tech, but not to come there. He said, go to Ross, but don’t come here.
No school is going to improve odds much when it comes to tech. It’s mostly dependent on your profile, your networking and the company’s willingness to sponsor internationals. if you are coming to the US expecting to land a FAANG role without a solid plan B or C, prepare to be disappointed.
Re UNC— it’s a fine school with a great alumni network, and I’d definitely consider it with scholarship over others without as much in the present situation. I highly doubt your connection/their peers have fully exhausted resources. Have they networked with alumni? Are their behaviorals on point? Are they open to other roles/industries? I can almost guarantee that something is missing here

If you are going for Finance and consulting then it’s very good school. For tech, situation is not good at UNC this year.
Tech isn’t good ANYWHERE. It’s a function of the present economy not the school.
