For applicants interested in studying and building a career in New York City, NYU Stern School of Business remains a popular MBA option. For the 2026–2027 cycle, Stern has removed its change essay and shifted greater emphasis to post-MBA goals. This article reviews the updated prompt and key considerations for applicants.

When is the NYU Stern Application portal expected to open up with the official essay prompts for this cycle? Last year, applications opened on June 9th - so curious as to the delay this year.

🎓 Welcome to the NYU Stern MBA 2026–27 Application Season!

With Round 1 just around the corner, I thought it’d be a great time to kick off this year’s discussions.

As one of the GMAT Club moderators for the NYU Stern forum, I would love to see this become a place where applicants can connect, ask questions, and support one another throughout the application journey.

Introduce yourself below!

🌍 Country
💼 Current role / industry
🎯 Post-MBA goal
📅 Applying in R1 or R2?
❓What’s your biggest challenge right now? (GMAT, essays, recommendations, interviews, etc.)

Feel free to jump into discussions, share resources, and help answer each other’s questions. Whether you’re applying this year or simply exploring Stern, everyone is welcome.

Wishing everyone the very best for the application season.
I am m looking forward to some great conversations!

Hey guys,

🌍 India
💼 Corporate finance / SAAS Tech
🎯 Investment banking
📅 R1
❓ I did my undergrad alongside my CA. So it was a correspondence course from DU SOL. How does Adcom see this? will it be a red flag and can make me reject outright? I am not able to find much precendents on the internet of someone making to t-10 US schools after doing distance undergraduation.

Hi! Just sharing my thoughts.

I don’t think a distance learning undergraduate degree from a recognized university like DU SOL is an automatic red flag or something that would lead to an outright rejection.

That said, compared to a traditional on-campus degree, it does give the AdCom fewer academic and extracurricular signals to work with. Things like classroom participation, campus leadership, student clubs, faculty interaction, competitions, and other university activities are often missing or less visible. Because of that, they may look more closely at the rest of your application to understand your potential.

In my opinion, that’s where the following become even more important:

• A strong GMAT/GRE score as an additional academic benchmark.

• The reason behind choosing distance learning. In your case, pursuing CA alongside your bachelor’s degree is an important piece of context and is worth highlighting.

• Your work experience, career progression, promotions, leadership, and measurable impact.

• Leadership outside university, whether through work, volunteering, entrepreneurship, professional organizations, or community initiatives.

• Strong essays and recommendations that help explain your journey and show who you are beyond your academics.

MBA admissions are holistic, so I don’t think any one factor, including the mode of your undergraduate degree, determines the outcome by itself.

One suggestion I would strongly recommend is to reach out directly to the admissions teams at your target schools. Most schools are quite approachable through webinars, virtual office hours, MBA fairs, campus visits, small group sessions, and sometimes even 1:1 coffee chats with admissions representatives or student ambassadors. Since every school evaluates applicants a little differently, hearing directly from them is probably the best way to get clarity rather than relying only on forum discussions.

For anyone following this thread, Stern’s admissions team regularly hosts webinars, office hours, and coffee chats where prospective applicants can ask questions directly. If you have a non-traditional academic background, these sessions are definitely worth attending:

I was planning to catch the R1 but due to overload at work i am juggling between either apply in R1 in a hurry or apply in R2 with a proper application while having time on hand.

I wanted to understand how much impact does it have on ones chances of getting selected with application in R1 vs R2?

I attended a webinar from Kellogg today and in that the Adcom had mentioned that R1 and R2 are similar in terms of importance given to them by adcoms so if you’re you’re applying, it is better to apply in the round that you feel you would have the strongest application in.
