Official Explanation



Creating a filter: in the original sentence, the phrase "act as a peace broker, so that it directly engages" is redundant in including "so that," since directly engaging is part of what a peace broker will do. So we cut to the answer choices to look for more straightforward wording.

Applying the filter: (C) is good. "Act" must be in parallel form with "step" in "to step forth." Choices (D) and (E) are therefore out. Choice (B) has the same problem as (A), and also incorrectly uses the word "like," which would be appropriate if China wasn't a peace broker, contrary to the intended meaning.

The correct answer is (C).
