Hi all!
I've been using this site for months, but this is the first time I've actually posted anything. Thank you to everyone out there who has ever posted an answer on a question. It is seriously helpful. Also, if this post is in the wrong section, I'm sorry!
Okay, so, a little background before I explain my current issue. I'm actually a PhD hopeful, already have an MBA. I originally took the GMAT a few years back for said MBA and scored a 550, which was what my school required, so I didn't think any more of it. Now I'm trying to get into marketing PhD programs, which often have a much higher score average. I've studied since June (target score is 730). I took the test once in late September (and got an abysmal 590). Defeated, angry, but determined, I decided I was going to try again. I'm scheduled to take it again in exactly three weeks.
Okay, on to my actual question: I took an official GMAT test today (one of the other ones GMAT provides that you pay for.) My quant score was a decent 40 (I say decent because I know I screwed up on my timing and missed a few because of it.) but my Verbal score was only 33. The odd thing is, I missed 20 questions on the Quant, but only 10 on the Verbal. Most of the wrong answers were decently spread out (except for a 4-in-a-row patch). Is that what caused me to only get a V33? I'm getting quite frustrated, because when I originally took the test 2+ years ago, I walked out of there with a dismal Q17 and V40. I don't understand how my Verbal can keep dropping when its my greatest strength! (Native English speaker, relatively terrible at math, all evidence to the contrary).
Does anyone have an explanation, or advice that can help me regain my edge in these last couple of weeks? I know that a 730 is probably outside my abilities right now, but I'd like to at least hit a high 600 (670-690).
Thanks in advance!
I would dig into the results of the GMAT you took today to determine where your weaknesses are. The 4-in-a-row patch probably hurt your score and prevented you from getting as high as you would like. Maybe you can figure out how that happened (fatigue?) and use it as a learning experience.
I wouldn't consider a V40 from 2 years ago and a V33 from yesterday to be dropping - I'm sure a lot has changed over time and you might just be a bit rusty.
