Hello all,
First of all, a little background. I have been working in the Information Security area for 5 years now and after some contemplation on what I would like to do in the future, I realized that MBA would be a wise stepping stone to reach where I was aspiring for. This was around end of May and I decided to write my GMAT by the end of August, so as to give enough time for myself to complete the applications for R1 or R2. After a lot of research (luckily I found GMATClub early) for about 2 weeks I figured out details of the test, zeroed down on books and other material etc.
Anyway, here are the materials I used for preparing:
Quant -
MGMAT books, GMATClub
Verbal -
eGMAT, GMATClub
IR and AWA -
MGMAT book, GMATClub
Although I have the 3
OG books, I did not practice much from them.
Verbal - I started my preparation with SC from
e-GMAT. I was still working when I started my prep and used to go through the video lessons whenever I had time on my hands. By the time my notice period was over it was end of July and I had only studied until the topic of Modifiers and was in panic mode. However, since I was not going to work I did have dedicated time for my prep. I completed the SC videos and solved the relevant
OG questions. I was sort of exhausted by the time SC was complete. I was looking forward for preparing for Quant. So, I put CR and RC on hold and delved into Quant.
Quant - This was how I went. Geometry -> Algebra (by this time I realized that I wouldn't be ready till test date -- end of aug -- and hence moved the date to 29th Sep) -> number properties -> FDP -> Word problems. For all of the above, I went through theory and solved all the questions given at the end of the sub-topic and finished the book. I referred to the GMATClub Math book and went through relevant sub-topics from there. At the end I prepared short notes for that topic (8 pages for entire quant), so that I could revise and review from the notes. By this time it was 3rd week of September. I still had to study CR and RC, therefore went back to verbal.
Back to Verbal - I went through the videos for CR and RC for verbal and completed the quizzes in
eGMAT. I had about 3 days left for the exam.
I spent one day on IR and one day on AWA. The remaining day was spent in revising all that I have studied. All throughout my prep I maintained notes on my errors. And reviewed them on the day before the exam.
CATs:
Below are my scores for the CATs I took.
0-8 % Q % V % 200-800 %
GMATPrep CAT 1 2 Jun 7 81 43 61 31 59 610 66
GMATPrep CAT 1 (r) 17 Aug 4 37 44 63 34 69 640 73
GMATPrep CAT 2 6 Sep 4 37 48 78 34 69 670 84
GMATClub Q CAT 42
GMATClub Q CAT 40
My analysis:
Quant - I had not practiced enough. I have realized I am weak in Permutations, Combinations, Probability and some sub-topics in number properties (especially those involving inequalities).
Verbal - At the time of writing my second CAT, I had finished SC and focused a lot on the SC questions in that CAT. But when I went on to do Quant and then took CAT the third time, I felt like I didnt know anything from SC. It drew a blank. That was very disappointing since I had spent my most time on this topic. I am comfortable with CR and RC. However, I feel the need to measure my accuracy in these two areas to make sure that I am not overly confident about these too, while in actuality I am not really good at them.
I am not happy with my score and would like to take the test again. Here is how I am planning to approach it.
Q - Take a topic. First work on 500 level problems and move on to 600 and when I get comfortable move on to 700 level problems. This is within GMATClub. I would like to simultaneously solve
OG questions as well. I have problems with my speed and I am hoping that through practice I will be able to increase my pace.
V - I am clueless as to how to approach SC. I am thinking of practicing RC and CR questions from
OG and GMATClub.
Can you guys please suggest if my approach needs any tweaks? Any help on how to approach SC would be great. It seems at this point that I have a mental block for SC questions. Additionally I have the below questions:
1. Should I order the ESR? How much would it help?
2. How often do you suggest I take CATs for the results to be effective and useful to analyze?
I appreciate all your inputs and suggestions.
Thank you,
Pam
