Hey guys,

So I just did the gmat yesterday and I’m disappointed with my result. I scored 690 which I understand is nothing to be unhappy with but my results from my practise tests were substantially higher than that (2 x 720, 2x 740, 730 and 760)

I feel like my practise was well focused given I acknowledged that quants was my weakest topic and purchased the official gmat quants practise questions as well as the 2020 guide.

I completed all of these questions and reviewed all incorrect answers and felt like I was making very good progress.

I was a little bit nervous going in to the exam but once I got started it subsided. I must have just been careless without realising.

My gut tells me to retake the test as soon as I can (so in two weeks).

I would be happy with any result equal to or higher than 720.

Do you think that I should retake the exam immediately or hold off?

I should note that I will need to have the exam finished by mid January for masters applications and will be busy all of December with college exams.

Any advice is much appreciated !

Hi,
Welcome to Gmatclub. 690 is a good score but not your desired score. I do not know how well you did in both sections (let us know). By reading your post, it seems that you got a low score in Quant and hence you need to improve and change your strategy in it. Check out the below posts which will be helpful to you:

Re-take in 2 weeks will depend upon your preparation and mindset. Make or follow a strong plan. Be sure before booking your date ;)

I think you should take it ASAP. Most of the times people don't get desired score on the first attempt due to many reason. But since you are confidant and your mock scores are consistent. I believe you should go ahead and retake the exam.

You should give exam again after taking a couple of mock exams to get rid of exam anxiety.You will definetly get your target score

Hi Conordentcullen,

First off, a 690 is a fantastic Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Programs that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

There's no harm in continuing to study though. Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) What were your Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores on your Official GMAT?
2) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used so far?
4) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
5) What are the exact application deadlines that you are facing?

You might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.
