Hi,
I am a 35 year old professional from India. I did my engineering in electronics and immediately after that, I completed my MBA in marketing and systems from one of the top business schools in India. Since then I have worked for 12 years as either a full time employee or consultant at firms including ibm, Microsoft, eBay, Autodesk etc. I spent 7 years in the US and then returned to Bangalore where I headed the product management for a social media startup that is doing decently well. In between I had written by GMAT in 2007 and scored a 770 but the score lapsed as I didn't apply then.
I returned to the states recently and while waiting on my work permit to be processed, I decided to write GMAT again. While my preparation went well and I was scoring consistently around 760-770 on the Gmac practice tests, I screwed up my actual exam on the verbal section and only managed a 740(q50,v40) with a 6 on IR.
I have two questions, first, does it make sense to cancel my score and retake the test as I feel confident that this test was an aberration and that I will score closer to 800 if I take it again. The reason I ask is that I felt my ability to score very high on GMAT would be a differentiator. While I understand 740 is good enough to let me apply to any college, would having say a 770 improve my chances to the the extent that it makes paying for and writing the test again worthwhile? If I do write it again, should I cancel the initial score or allow both to be reported?
Secondly, is my older score of any consequence and does it make sense to mention it on my applications to show that I have consistently been able to score high?

Hi there!
Well your 740 is an excellent score. But I can see how that's frustrating given how you were practicing and scored before. So yes, give it another shot, not much to lose and hopefully you can get that 770 again! That would definitely increase your chances.
I would not cancel your 740. Keep it as a backup in case you do end up needing to apply with it, and if you don't then reporting two scores is not an issue at all, they will only look at your highest score. I would not mention the older 770 in your application -- it lapsed and there's nothing to be done with it now unfortunately.
One other question: which schools / types of programs are you looking at? As you probably know, 12 years is quite on the high end for standard 2 year programs. Have you looked into Exec MBA options? Especially if you headed product management, that may be more in line with your experience. Plus, GMAT is typically weighed less for EMBA admissions. Just wanted to flag that for you.

Hi There , I have 13 + years of experience in IT and working as Project manager for the last 6 years and now planning to take GMAT and applying for the Top 10 schools. I think that 1 year MBA will be a good option for me .Can you Please help to explain Which are the colleges are good for my profile . I am from India and now settled in Canada with PR(Permanent Residency ).
