During a spring season, a certain glacier surged at the rate of 1/4 mile per 25 days. How many hours does it take the glacier to cover one foot? (1 mile = 5,280 feet)

(A) 5/264
(B) 6/25
(C) 5/11
(D) 11/5
(E) 25/6

The answer choices are separated by decent amounts, so we can probably Ballpark.
1 mile is 5280 feet, so 1/4 mile is about 1300 feet.
We cover that distance in 25 days, so roughly 52 feet per day.
How long does it take to cover 1 foot? 1/52nd of a day. That's a touch less than 1/2 an hour.

Answer choice C.

During a spring season, a certain glacier surged at the rate of 1/4 mile per 25 days. How many hours does it take the glacier to cover one foot? (1 mile = 5,280 feet)

(A) 5/264
(B) 6/25
(C) 5/11
(D) 11/5
(E) 25/6

The glacier surges 1/4 * 5,280 feet in 25 * 24 hours. Thus, it will take (25 * 24)/(1/4 * 5,280) = (4 * 25 * 24)/5,280 hours to cover one foot. Let's simplify this expression:

\(\Rightarrow\) (4 * 25 * 24)/5,280

\(\Rightarrow\) 2,400/5,280

\(\Rightarrow\) 240/528

While we can continue simplifying the expression, we don't need to. We can eliminate answer choices D and E because both are greater than 1. We can eliminate answer choice B because 240/528 has a factor of 5 in the numerator, but 6/25 does not. To decide between A and C, we just need to notice that 240/528 is roughly 1/2, and 5/264 is much smaller than 1/2. Since we were able to eliminate every answer choice besides C, the answer is C.
