•
Each is almost always singular and thus must be paired with a singular verb. Not always.
→ When each
precedes the thing or things it describes (in this case, wives of Henry VIII), the singular word
each is a determiner (or "indefinite pronoun") and controls the verb, which should be singular.
If the object of the prepositional phrase (Each of the Xs) is plural, the verb does
not follow the plural Xs, but rather, the singular
each.
Correct: Each of the girls wants a cookie.→ When
each follows the things it describes, then
each becomes a pronoun that refers to the plural things and thus requires a plural verb.
Correct: The girls each want a cookie. In this second case, in which each is a pronoun that refers to an antecedent noun, the pronoun
each will refer to a plural noun.
In this case,
each cannot refer to a singular noun. You won't see that construction.
•
Every, which you should think of as
every single individual, is also singular.
• Split #1: When each comes before the noun to which it refers, each is singularOption A incorrectly pairs singular
each with plural
were.
Option E, which is inverted, also incorrectly pairs
each with
were.
(Option E, switched around and slightly shortened:
Each of Henry VIII's wives were divorced by Henry VIII or executed by the state.)
Eliminate A and E
• Split #2: When each follows and refers to a plural noun, each should be paired with a plural verbOption B incorrectly pairs a plural verb (wives) with a singular verb (was).
Wrong: Henry VIII’s six
wives was each either divorced by Henry or executed by the state.
Correct: Henry VIII's wives were each divorced or executed.
Eliminate B
•
Every is singular, as is
every oneOption C incorrectly pairs singular
every one [of the wives] with the plural
were.Eliminate C.
Option D is the answer.→ Option D correctly pairs
each with
was.
