Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

This question tests your ability to be extremely literal in terms of subject-verb agreement.
A few points to note
Salespeople can both be singular or plural depending on the context.
That is referring to salespeople so were is correct.
Company is singular so was is correct.
Each is singular hence IS is correct.

So I don't see any errors in choice A. But let's do a POE.

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
This is the correct choice for the above-mentioned reasons.

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
Was here is incorrect.

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
Are here is incorrect because the subject is EACH.

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
Again, WAS is incorrect.

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
Are here is incorrect because the subject is EACH.

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

With Each of => noun must be plural & verb should be singular => So, A, C & E out.

Between B & D, B has used past perfect and past tense to establish the sequencing of the two past events and D has used "of" unnecessarily.
So, Ans should be (B)

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

This is a S-V agreement question.
'Each of' will require a singular verb.
'salespeople' is a plural subject and 'were retained' is correct.
'the company' is singular and 'was' is correct
'sales team members' is plural hence 'are' is correct.
POE:
A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is. --> that refers to sales people which is plural.
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. Wrong tense like B
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are. --> As each is singular, is should be used instead of are.

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

It is clearly a 3/2 split depending upon the below cases

Use of "Each of the salespeople that were" & "Each of the salespeople that was", clearly we will go with the second option that is "Each of the salespeople that was" because usage of Each before the subject of the sentence make it singular hence "was" is the correct verb form.

So, A, C & E are out. We left with B & D

Now between B & D, we can see that the tense usage in B is past perfect tense whereas in D it is simple past tense, now as we have a time shift between two past events clearly here, we will surely go with the past perfect tense, because after the acquisition was completed then only can these salesperson retained in the work force.

This question is testing our skills in subject-verb agreement.

Let us see the original sentence once:
Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

Let's first check the SV pairs:
Sales people - were -> Correct
Company - was -> Correct
Each - is -> Correct
Members - are -> Correct

Let us go via every option to see what is incorrect in them:

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
As per the above analysis, this option looks good. Hold.

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
SV error - "Salespeople" - "was"

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
SV error- "Each" … “are”.

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
SV error - "Salespeople" - "was", "members" - "is"

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
SV error- SV error - "member" - “are”.

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

Error analysis: Each is singular here , so usage of were is incorrect here

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.-as mentioned in error analysis
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.-use of had been is incorrect here
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.-use of were is incorrect here
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.-correct
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.-use of were is incorrect here

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

'Each of the sales people' will use singular verb and 'that' refers back to it, so was is the correct verb. Option A, C & E are out
B/w B &D: company was acquired in the past and is not been continuously acquired. Therefore, past perfect continuous 'had been acquired' is incorrect.

Splits:

1. Each of the salespeople that were vs Each of the salespeople that was
Each indicates singularity. Therefore Each....was is the right SV agreement

2. after the company was acquired vs after the company had been acquired
Company acquisition--------------->employee retention. There is a sequence of events here. Acquisition happened before retention so the earlier action must be in the past perfect tense

Breakdown:

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
Each.....were - Eliminate

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
Each.. was + company had been - Keep

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
Each...were - Eliminate

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
Company was acquired - Eliminate

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
Each..were - Eliminate

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.

First, what was retained after the acquisition? the salespeople (plural), so we need "that were", out (B) and (C).
Second, "Each" before the subject requires a singular verb, so we need "is more likely", out (C-again) and (E).
Finally, "any of…team members" is plural, so we needed "are" not "is" in (D), out.

IMO : C

"each" means you are talking about every one of a group, separately.

1) When used before a singular noun, "each" takes a singular verb.

2) When used after a plural subject, "each" takes a plural verb.

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. is more likely is wrong subject verb agreement.
B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is. that was retained si wrong subject verb agreement
C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are. Correct subject-verb agreement and correct comparison.
D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is. is more likely is again wrong subject verb agreement.
E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
Subject verb agreement is correct but the comparison between each sales team people and any other team member are is wrong.

When pronoun 'each' is used as a subject always take singular verbs.

So we can reject options A,C and E.

Between B and D, in B use of past perfect tense is unnecessary and incorrect.
Option D fixes this problem using simple past tense.

E

Pretty easy if notice the split between "any of the other sales team members" and "any other sales team member". The first phrase makes no sense, so A, C, D are out.

Below are my reasons to reject other options:

A. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
Out because of above reason

B. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company had been acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member is.
"that was retained" is incorrect because that should refer to "salespeople" which is plural, so "that were" is better.

C. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company had been acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.
Out because of above reason

D. Each of the salespeople that was retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members is.
Out because of above reason

E. Each of the salespeople that were retained after the company was acquired are more likely to receive a promotion than any other sales team member are.
Correct choice

With each we have to use singular

Comparison.is between one person and other or.members with other members

Competetion is between A and D

A uses had been ,which is not required ,was is more accurate

D it is.!!!

Each of the sales people that were retained after the company was acquired is more likely to receive a promotion than any of the other sales team members are.

So, phrase "each of" + N(plural) should be followed by singular verbs --> eliminate A and C because both sentences use relative clause "that WERE" instead of "that was" to modify "each of the salespeople".

Next, as the acquisition of the company took place BEFORE the retaining of salespeople --> the former is in past perfect present and the latter is in past simple. --> eliminate D and E.

Parallel in comparison: "... than ANY of the other sale team members IS."

Answer B satisfies all criteria above. So it's correct.
