Hello Experts,

I recently took my testcentre GMAT and scored 680. Attaching my ESR for expert evaluation EMPOWERgmatRichC ScottTargetTestPrep anyone?

Test day: Managed to complete verbal just in time, Rushed past Quarter 4 in quant.

My base line score was 580. I studied using OG complete bundle, compilation excel file for verbal & GMATclub (filtered by all OG's & manhattan) Below are official mock scores
Scored 680 (Q49 V32) 45 days prior to exam in official mock
Mock 2 700 30 days prior
Mock 3 720 (Q50 V37) 20 Days Prior
Mock 4 740 (Q50 V40) 14 Days Prior
I took 2 GMAT club mocks - Q50. I did not use any other mock for my practice.

I studied for 1 year intermittently, However I had a focused approach of daily 3 hours on weekdays and 5 hours on weekends for last 3 months. I was studying along side a job.
Average score of my first choice schools is 710. I belong to hotel industry (Little unconventional background), so I am still aiming to cross the 700 barrier by 31st October.

Meanwhile, I am applying to few B-school in R1 where I feel I will have a better chance of securing an admit. I plan to finish my application for these schools by 15-20 Sept and restart my prep for 30-45 days.
Any guidance/suggestion will be helpful. :)

Absolutely bombed my last exam ,scores worse than my diagnosis which I took a year back.

Have to vastly improve in SC and RC. Targeting a V42
Have to improve in Quant from 47 to 50.

Hi,

I gave the exam on 3rd Sept and was targeting b/w 730 & 750, but ended up getting 660 (q49, v32, ir7, awa5.0).
Below are my official GMAC mock results:
Aug 27 - 730 (q49v40)
Aug 30 - 720 (q50v38)
Sept 1 - 750 (q50v41)
Sept 2 - 740 (q50v40)
Mock exam conditions: 2 breaks in every exam, secluded quite room, no handicaps, last 2 exams given at the same time of the day as the actual exam.
Study schedule: 30+ hours per week.
MBA Application: ASAP; I wanted to apply to R1 (early October), but now because of the score gap I might not be able to make it. So R2.
Study Material: e-GMAT course.

After reviewing the ESR, below is my initial analysis/POA:

Quant:
Consistent with mocks, but can be improved to Q50.
Geometry is super weak and needs immediate attention.
Refresher on Algebra, Number Properties, & Absolute Values.
Train more on 700+ questions post refresher.

Verbal:
Inconsistent with mocks to a large degree.
Lost a lot of score in the first 2 set.
All sections, SC, CR, & RC, are average.
There is time management issue, but can resolved easily once the ability to handle hard questions improves.
Have problem with Medium+ questions across, so I feel there are fundamental issues.
Retrain for approach: Meaning based for SC, Pre-thinking for CR, & Notes/Structure for RC.
Refresh grammar, especially Verb/tenses (feel this is weak).

I have attached my ESR. I would be great if someone can offer more insight.

Hi! Can someone help me explain my verbal section? I took the exam today and got the same score as I did the prior time. My verbal was 40 last time with 5-10 mistakes and this time it seems like there are minimal mistakes yet I resulted in the same 40? I'm not sure where to improve for my next attempt...having verbal capped at 40 is restraining me from getting the 750+ I need.

Any advice would be helpful. And can you please let me know what is the expectation to score in the mid-40s verbal range? How can it be done? Thank you!

Hi sushant2143,

I’m sorry to hear how things went with your GMAT. The good news is that you scored really well on quant, right? That said, I understand that you are not satisfied with your verbal score, so the question we need to ask is why you scored so high on your practice exams but lower on the real GMAT.

Assuming that you took your official practice exams under realistic testing conditions, the results show that, on a good day, you are capable of scoring higher than 680. Thus, it’s quite possible that nerves, stress, tiredness, or a combination of all three negatively affected your test-day performance. However, it’s also possible that you have some lingering weaknesses that were exposed on test day. Although I’m unsure of how you prepared, it’s possible that, in your preparation, particularly in verbal, you did not really learn to do what you have to do in order to score high on the actual GMAT. Rather, you picked up on some patterns that were effective in getting you relatively high scores on practice tests. So, for you to hit your score goal, your preparation, particularly for verbal, probably needs to be more complete, meaning that you have to go through the various types of GMAT questions carefully to find your exact weaknesses, fill gaps in your knowledge, and strengthen your skills.

For verbal specifically, you have to become more skilled at clearly defining the differences between trap choices and correct answers. Otherwise, you will get stuck guessing between two choices or be surprised to find that you incorrectly answered questions that you thought you answered correctly. Becoming more skilled in this way takes carefully analyzing all of the answer choices to lots of verbal questions to develop an eye for the logical differences between the choices. In other words, you have to go beyond answering practice questions and reading explanations to doing deep analysis of questions to learn to see everything that is going on in them.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant and verbal materials, so take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the best quant and verbal courses.

Hi everyone,

I gave my GMAT exam yesterday was completely let down by the result as it was not at all in sync with my official GMAT mock scores and prep.

Test day experience: In Verbal, I made sure to take enough time to read and comprehend the question stem before moving to the options, sometimes even more than needed, and hence in the last I had to rush through around 6-7 questions. I found RC as the toughest and that shows in the ESR as well. In Quant, I was quite relaxed at the start and lost some extra time on trying to solve questions that were taking more time in the higher difficulty in the 3rd part of the exam, due to this I had to guess around 7 questions in the last.

My scores in official mocks were:
Official mock #3: 690 Q50 V31 (June 6 '21)
Official mock #4: 710 Q49 V38(Aug 21 '21)
Official Mock #2: 760 Q49 V44 (Aug 30 '21)
Official Mock #5: 660 Q49 V32(Sept 5 '21)
Official Mock #6: 690 Q46 V38(Sept 12 '21)

I went through the Official Guides, Verbal, Quant Review as well e-GMAT concepts via the subscription I had purchased for Quant and Verbal. I also went through a lot of GMATNinja videos and posts on GMAT Club.

I know that there are a lot of fluctuations in my verbal score and the score dropped after a peak in between. I am really confused as to my strategy going forward to make the best plan so as to efficiently prepare and get the desired score (720+) as soon as possible, to meet the application deadlines.

Please find enclosed my ESR, kindly advise and let me know the best way to improve my score. I would really appreciate all the help, especially concerning Verbal.

Hi robertoah,

The ESR does not include data on the Experimental questions (re: the ones that do NOT count towards your Score) that appear in the Quant and Verbal sections. Thus, it can appear that you spent far more time (or less) in a section than you actually did.

While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). Since you purchased the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you. Before you can include attachments with your posts/PMs, you need to have at least 5 posts in the forums (right now, you have just 1 post). If you would rather not go through those extra steps at this point, then you can feel free to email me directly (at [email protected]).

Scored a 690. V36 Q48.
Used to consistently score Q50 in official preps, Verbal score is in line with official mocks.
Completed Quant 5 minutes before time.
Was Not able to manage time in Verbal and had to guess(not blindly but quickly applying rules and move on) last 5 questions which were only SC and CR.
Although improved by 50 points, my problem that still affects my score is SC. Is it possible to improve SC in a month?

Hi linuschoudhury,

You did really well towards the end, given that the average time during that quarter was just 0:37 (!). And yes, generally, improving SC quickly is easier than, say, improving RC quickly.

I am attaching hereby my ESR for recent GMAT attempt. I am really shocked with my poor verbal performance as I was sure that I know enough to do better that that I got.
I want ESR to be analyzed by some expert, and, if possible, can he/she suggest me way forward from this point.

My target score is 730+
