Hi there

After one month of intense studying (8 hours per day) I took my first gmat yesterday and scored 700 (v39 q47). This is below my mock performance (worst mock 6 days before gmat - 710 v40 q47; best 3 days before gmat 760 v44 q49).

Given I am targeting min 730, I am planning on retaking it soon but would like to understand what areas I should focus on and when would be best for me to retake it.

Don't have 5 posts here yet so cannot attach the file - would someone we wiling to look at my ESR and give me some tips please?

Thank you

Hi ibstudent86

700 is a great score. But if you feel you can take it to 730+, then I can definitely help you with that. The first thing in that process would be to identify your weak areas. Since you have your ESR, that would be definitely helpful. You can connect with me on DM for ESR analysis.

We could connect over a zoom conference call to have a one-on-one discussion and analyze your ESR together and at the same time come up with a plan of action to improve your score to 730+.

I took GMAT in April 2022. Following are my (taken in a span of 3 month) results. I took all the exams replication the actual test scenario taking 8 minutes break in between Quant and Verbal. In the first mock, the sequence was Quant->Verbal->IR->AWA. 2nd Mock onwards I kept the sequence as Verbal->Quant->IR->AWA

Mock 1 - Q46 V35 - 660 mba.com free test 1
Mock 2 - Q49 V31 - 650 mba.com free test 2
Mock 3 - Q49 V34 - 680 mba.com paid test 5
Mock 4 - Q49 V40 - 720 experts global free mock
Mock 5 - Q50 V27 - 640 GMATWhiz free mock
Mock 6 - Q41 V35 - 630 eGMAT free mock
Mock 7 - Q48 V32 - 660 mba.com paid test 6
Actual GMAT - Q45 V28 - 610

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

I got my ESR and strangely with 7 mistakes I got pulled to V36 (1 mistake each in 1st 2 quarters). I am confused since I have seen some V42 ESRs almost the same.

Hi ApurbaGMAT,

Looking at your score break-up, you definitely have consistency issues. There are wild swings in your scores which implies that you haven’t followed a very structured approach. Especially for verbal. You may need to start again for verbal and also work on the application of concepts for verbal.

Having said that, it would be too early to conclude anything without knowing the actual reason. To understand what could have led to the drop in the score and to suggest you the plan of action, I need a little more information about your GMAT preparation. I would like to know more about

  • the way you prepared till now (your study strategy)
  • your weak areas
  • your approach of solving questions
  • the resources you have used

Answers to these questions will help me guide you in a better way. And I personally suggest to go for the retake only after you prepared well and are 100% confident.

Having said that, I would like to have a one-on-one conversation with you. The discussion would be mostly around the answers to the above questions, the approximate time you have for the next attempt and the plan of action. Since you have an ESR with you, that will be even more helpful to get the insights about your performance. You use use the link below to schedule a call with me.

Hello,

I would need advice on the verbal section. During the official mock tests, I have always scored in the range V38-42. I took the real test twice, and I scored V29 and V33.
Unfortunately I cannot attach the ESR of my latest attempt (V33) as I do not have enough posts on GmatClub, but I am happy to send it privately.

I would like to understand the following:
- Why is there such a divergence between mock test and real test for verbal? What am I doing wrong in the real test that the mock test does not capture?
- The % of correct questions for verbal is as follows: Q1 (100%) Q2 (86%) Q3 (57%) Q4 (50%). I can see that in the second quarter I responded incorrectly to one low-medium question, and the average difficulty level suffered a lot after this. Can it be that this one incorrect question dragged everything down in the 3rd quarter? Would I have gotten a considerably higher score if I had answered to that question correctly, and my correct % for Q3 would have been slightly higher (e.g., 60-70%)?
- What can I do differently next time? How do I make sure that this doesn't repeat in the next real tests?

Thank you very much for your help! Any advice is highly appreciated.

Hello, buzzzzz11. Many things could have had an adverse effect on your test-day performance, such as nerves or a compulsion to be extra careful, but based strictly on your accuracy across the four quarters, I would guess that you were either lacking in stamina or started becoming more cognizant of the clock in the latter portion of the section, causing you to abandon the methods that had been working well up to that point. Any time you miss a question that is Medium or Low-Medium, yes, you have dug yourself a hole that might take a few more questions to climb out of. Miss another question along the way, and it is like falling right back to the bottom. I would not focus so much on that one question as I would all questions at or below the Medium level of difficulty. When you practice official questions, your accuracy should be at least 80 percent on Medium questions across the board (CR, RC, SC). Otherwise, you will likely be caught out when it matters the most, and once again, your score will suffer. (Do not trust "600-700 level" tags or approximations from any source besides GMAC™. Sometimes official questions are more challenging than they would appear to be on this site.) Of course, practice can help you build confidence, but until you can let loose on test day and treat the exam the same way you would a mock, you will likely continue to earn scores below that standard.

Good luck with your studies.

Hi buzzzzz11,

Sorry about how things went with your GMAT. There could be a couple of reasons for the drop in the score. Please go through the article below to find out the probable reasons.

Scored well on mocks but failed miserably on the test?

Hi raj94knp

The ideal thing would be to identify your weak areas and work on them. You are almost there in quant but there is a clear lack of consistency in your scores in case of Verbal. There are wild swings in your scores (Verbal) which implies that you haven’t followed a very structured approach. One possible reason could be that you’re following too many sources of information and have now confused yourself. If that's the case, I would suggest you to only focus and study from one source, whatever it may be. By working on your approach and following the right methodologies, you can take your score to 42-43 in verbal.

Coming back to working on weak areas, you have to analyze even the minute things and make sure to work on them. As you have an ESR, I can definitely help you in analyzing it. We can get in touch over a zoom conference call and we can analyze it together. This way we can figure out what exactly your weak areas are and then make a plan of action. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.

Hi guys, to make it short, I studied for the GMAT for the last 7 weeks, in the last two weeks I got the following scores on the official mocks:

#1) 710 (46Q 42V)
#2) 720 (47Q 42V)
#3) 710 (46Q 42V)
#4) 750 (48Q 46V)
#5) 710 (49Q 38V)

Unfortunately I took the official GMAT yesterday and got a score of 650 (42Q 38V)
The thing is that I did not feel stressed nor did I have any anxiety before or during the test, I actually felt great throughout and seeing the final score on the screen almost knocked me off my chair..
I aim for a minimum of 710, AND I'm starting a new full time job in a week meaning I wont have a lot of time to practice.

What should I do next? should I just schedule for the nearest available slot for another exam?
Please let me know your insights from my ESR.

Thanks.

Hello! I took my GMAT on 30 August '22 and got a score of 680 - Q48/V35. I had expected this score as my scores usually fluctuated in this range in my mocks. However, I feel my time management is pathetic as I had to guess the final 5 questions in Quant and the last 10 questions in verbal! During my mocks too, there have barely been 2 mocks where I was able to complete quant and with verbal I'm always guessing the final 4-6 questions. I started preparing for the GMAT in May 2022. I'm going through posts on the Gmatclub for strategies to improve time management, however any further advice is welcome!

Official Mock scores:
Gmat prep 1: Q42 V29 (590) 31st May
Gmat prep 2: Q40 V31 (590) 12th July
Gmat prep 3: Q49 V36 (700) 5th August
Gmat prep 4: Q45 V38 (680) 14th August
Gmat prep 5: Q42 V40 (660) 19th August
Gmat prep 6: Q49 V26 (620) 25th August

I am attaching my ESR below and would love some expert insights about the same. I have my GMAT in 3 weeks and my target score is 720.

I've attached my ESR for your review. Any guidance would be helpful!

This was my second attempt at the exam. Gave the previous one 2 months back (600 score)

Target is 710. Scored 700-710 on mocks. Studied for 4-5 months on weekends using OG, gmatprep questions on gmatclub.
