I took the GMAT this weekend and scored a disappointing 570. This was a step back from the GMAT I took in January, I scored a 610(Q42, V31).
A major mistake I believe impacted my quant performance is that I was overconfident in my ability to recall concepts I hadn't practiced since prior to my January exam. I was hoping to score a Q45+, and it appears I was on track during the first half of the exam, but I didn't manage my time well and that cost me in the second half of the quant section.
Since I plan on retaking the exam in March, I will take a practice exam every weekend, and then focus on the areas I got questions wrong in with the use of GMAT Club CAT's. Would this be a reasonable approach?
I struggled with sentence correction in the verbal section, but overall I think I was near my goal of V38+. In the sub sections, I scored a 51 in critical reasoning, a 41 in reading comprehension, and a 27 in sentence correction. From what I understand, the verbal score is near the average of your performance in each subsection. Had I completed the verbal section by not leaving 4 questions unanswered, yet maintained the same performance in each subcategory, would I have scored near the average of my performance in each subcategory(39.66)?
I averaged 2 minutes per sentence correction question, but I believe I can focus on sentence correction and lower my average time per question to under 90 seconds. I believe that would allow me complete the verbal section. According to the ESR for my January exam, my performance was the equivalent to a 38 in each subsection, but I struggled to complete the exam and only answered 30 questions before running out of time. So I was able to improve from a 38 to a 51 in critical reasoning and from a 38 to a 41 in reading comprehension. However, I regressed in sentence correction by scoring a 38 in January and a 27 this weekend.
A few days prior to the exam, I noticed I had not improved much in sentence correction, and that may have given me anxiety during the exam while I was solving sentence correction questions. Any advice is appreciated, since I would like to score at least a 680(Q45, V38) on my next official exam. Thank you!
