Option C:
Scoring 57 and attending a doubt clarification class three days later would not help because the doubt class must be attended within 2 days.
So this option gives 9 Failure Points thus correct for 'must repeat a thesis but not the latest project'.

Option E:
This option is easy as it provides 13 Failure Points thus correct option for 'must repeat the latest project'.

Let's compute the Failure points for all the 5 students given in the choices

Student 1:    3 + 3 = 6 (in 4 consecutive month period), 3 + 3 = 6 (in 4 consecutive month period)
Student 2:    2 + 2 + 3  = 7 (in 4 consecutive month period)
Student 3:    3* + 2 + 2 + 2** = 9 (in 4 consecutive month period)
(*For student 3, because the doubt clarification class was attended three days later we must NOT add 5 marks to the first score)
(**For student 3, because the doubt clarification class was attended within two days we must add 5 marks to the first score, then the Failure points would be 2 not 3 for the last score)
Student 4:    2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 (in 4 consecutive month period)
Student 5:    2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13 (in 4 consecutive month period)

Student 5 qualifies for Must repeat the last project as the Failure points are at least 12.
Student 3 qualifies for Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project as the Failure points are at least 9.

70<x<80 = 1 Failure Point
60<x<70 = 2 Failure Point
x<60 = 3 Failure Point

We have to check for weeks occuring in 4 consecutive months and summation of failure points in this should be at least 9 for repeating thesis or at least 12 for repeating project

Also if doubt session is attended within 2 days bonus 5 marks are given
Option A and B ruled out as consisting of months in 2021 and non consecutive.

Only Option C for thesis as sum of Failure points is 9 and E for project as sum is 12 satisfies

Given - Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months.
Failure Points (FP) are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test. For any weekly test, a student scoring less than 80 but more than 70 marks receives one Failure Point, a student scoring less than 70 but more than 60 marks receives two Failure Points, and a student scoring less than 60 receives three Failure Points. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.

The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project (atleast 9 but not 12 in any consequetive 4 months), and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project (at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months.).

Lets evaluate options.
A.
Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020. (FP-3)
Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020 (FP-3)
Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021. (FP-3)
Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021. (FP-3)
For consecutive 4 Months which includes July2020-Aug2020 will come in one pair of 4 Consequetive and Jan2021 and Mar2021 in another pair of 4 consequetive months.
Therefore sum of FP for consecutive 4 Months which includes July2020-Aug2020 = 3 + 3 = 6 and sum of FP for consecutive 4 Months which includes Jan2021 and Mar2021 = 6
No need of repeating thesis or project as total FP is < 9. Eliminate A.

B.
Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day. Total score = 58+5 = 63 (FP 2)
Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day. Total scores = 52+5 = 57 (FP-3)
Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021. (FP-3)
Therefore sum of FP for consecutive 4 Months which includes Aug2020 and Oct2020 = 2+2+3 = 7 and for 2021 there is only data of march 3 both <9. Eliminate B.

C.
Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later.-scores will remain same. (FP-3)
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. Total score = 59+5 = 64 (FP-2)
For these 4 months from Sept2020 to Dec2020 = Total FP = 3+2+2+2 = 9.
Option C is that student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project.

D.
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021. (FP-2)
Total FP = 2+2+2+2 = 8 (<9) Eliminate D.

E.
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020. (FP-3)
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020. (FP-3)
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020. (FP-2)
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020. (FP-3)
Total FP for 4 consequetive months from July2020 to Oct2020 = 2+3+3+2+3 = 13 (>12)
Option E who must repeat the latest project.

Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project - Option C.
Must repeat the latest project - Option E.

To determine which student must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and which student must repeat the latest project, we need to calculate the Failure Points for each scenario provided in the options.

Failure Points System:
Less than 80 but more than 70: 1 Failure Point
Less than 70 but more than 60: 2 Failure Points
Less than 60: 3 Failure Points

Additionally, attending a doubt clarification class adds 5 marks to the most recent weekly test.

Criteria for repeating:
Repeats thesis: At least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months.
Repeats latest project: At least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months.

Now, let's evaluate each student's scores and calculate the Failure Points.

Analysis:

SET 1:
Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020 : 3 Failure Points.
Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020 : 3 Failure Points.
=> Within July & August 2020 only 6 Failure points ----- [6<9 0r 12]
( Condition of 4 Consecutive months is not fulfilled as January 2021 is 5th month from August 2020)

Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021 : 3 Failure Points.
Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021 : 3 Failure Points.
=> Within July & August 2020 only 6 Failure points ( Condition of 4 Consecutive months )
Therefore, SET 1 does not cannot help us determine whether student must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, or student must repeat the latest project

SET 2:
Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day.
58 + 5 = 63 marks: 2 Failure Points
Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day.
52 + 5 = 57 marks: 3 Failure Points
=> Within August & October 2020 only 7 Failure points ----- [7<9 0r 12]
( Condition of 4 Consecutive months is not fulfilled as March 2021 is 5th month from October 2020 )
Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021 : 3 Failure Points. ----- [3<9 0r 12]
Therefore, SET 2 does not cannot help us determine whether student must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, or student must repeat the latest project

SET 3:
Scored 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later.
AS doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published to get +5 score, In this case no reward points.
=> 57 marks: 3 Failure Points
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day.
59 + 5 = 64 marks: 3 Failure Points reduced to 2 Failure Points after attending the class.
=> => Within September, October, November & December 2020 9 Failure points ----- Repeats thesis As within any four consecutive months. [/b]

SET 4:
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021 : 2 Failure Points.
=> Within November & December 2020 with January 2021 --- Fulfills condition of 4 Consecutive months but 8 Failure Points does not determine anything as at least 9 Failure Points are required.
=> SET 4 does not help to determine anything.

SET 5:
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020 : 3 Failure Points.
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020 : 3 Failure Points.
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020 : 2 Failure Points.
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020 : 3 Failure Points.
=> Total of 13 Failure Points within 4 consecutive months which is greater than 12 Failure points
=> Student must repeat the latest project

Conclusion:

SET 3 = Student must repeat a thesis but not the latest project
"""Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later.
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020.
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020.
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day."""

SET 5= Student must repeat the latest project
"""Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020;
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020.
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020."""

It takes at the very least 3 failures (if they're all below 60) within 4 months for each of our repeating options, so let's first evaluate the timings and if they're fine, move on to the scoring. Note that acc stands for accumulation below:

1)

Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020. -> resets 2nd week November
Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020 -> resets 1st week December
Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021. -> back at zero here and not enough points after so we can move on
Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021.

-> Safe

2)
Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day. -> next day is fine for +5 on score so 2 failures points which reset 1st week December
Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020. -> 2 failures points which reset 1st week January (acc: 4)
Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day. -> same day is fine for +5 score but still 3 failures points which reset 1st week February (acc: 8)
Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021. -> acc is back at zero here so we can move on, not enough failures after

-> Safe

3)
Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later. -> 3 days is too late, must be 2 max so 3 failure points which reset 1st week January (acc: 3)
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 4th week February (acc: 5)
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 1st week March (acc: 7)
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. -> same day is fine so 2 failure points which reset 1st week January (acc: 9)

-> Must repeat thesis

4)
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 2nd week March (acc: 2)
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 2nd week April (acc: 4)
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 2nd week May (acc: 6)
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021. -> 2 failure points which reset 2nd week June (acc: 8)

-> Safe

5)
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020; -> 2 failure points which reset 4th week November (acc: 2)
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020. -> 3 failure points which reset 2nd week December (acc: 5)
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020. -> 3 failure points which reset 4th week December (acc: 8)
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020. -> 2 failure points which reset 3rd week January (acc: 10)
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020. -> 3 failure points which reset 2nd week February (acc: 13)

-> Must repeat project

The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Solution: Given that,
  • 1 Failure Point: Scores between 70 and 79
  • 2 Failure Points: Scores between 60 and 69
  • 3 Failure Points: Scores below 60
If a student attends a doubt clarification class within two days, he/she can make up for 5 marks. This changes the score, and therefore, the Failure Points.

Let's calculate the Failure Points accumulated by each student within any four consecutive months and check whether the thresholds of 9 and 12 Failure Points are reached.

Student 1
  • Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020 ---> 3 Failure points
  • Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020 ---> 3 Failure points
  • Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021 ---> 3 Failure points
  • Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021 ---> 3 Failure points
Total Failure points in any four consecutive months (July-Aug) = 3 + 3 = 6
Total Failure points in any four consecutive months (Jan-Mar) = 3 + 3 = 6
Doesn't qualify

Student 2
  • Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day ---> 58 + 5 marks
    = 63 marks ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day ---> 52 + 5 marks
    = 57 marks ---> 3 Failure points
  • Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021 ---> 3 Failure points
Total Failure points in any four consecutive months (Aug-Oct) = 2 + 2 + 3 = 7
Doesn't qualify

Student 3
  • Scored 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later ---> 3 Failure points
  • Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day ---> 59 + 5 marks
    = 64 marks ---> 2 Failure points
Total Failure points in any four consecutive months (Sep-Dec) = 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 9
Qualifies

Student 4
  • Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020 ---> 2 Failure points
  • Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021 ---> 2 Failure points
Total Failure points in any four consecutive months (Nov-Jan) = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
Doesn't qualify

This question can be solved by simply going through the table and calculating the results of the students. The pieces of key information to help you calculate are as follows:

1. "Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months"
2. "Repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months"
3. A score of <60 = 3 Failure Points
4. A score between 60-70 = 2 Failure Points
5. A score between 70-80 = 1 Failure Points
6. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test
7. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published

And now we go through the answer choices. I will go through the two correct answer choices:

Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later = 3 points (attended doubt clarification class three days later so does not impact score.
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020 = 2 points
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020 = 2 points
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day = 2 points (attended doubt clarification class within same day which bumps up score to 64 which is 2 points)

Check the date between first test and last test? Within four consecutive months.
Total: 9 points -> Thesis repeat

Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020 = 2 points
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020 = 3 points
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020 = 3 points
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020 = 2 points
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020 = 3 points

Check the date between first and last test? Within four consecutive months
Total: 13 points -> Project repeat

Bunuel
Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months. Failure Points are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test.

In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.
