Bunuel
Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months. Failure Points are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test. For any weekly test, a student scoring less than 80 but more than 70 marks receives one Failure Point, a student scoring less than 70 but more than 60 marks receives two Failure Points, and a student scoring less than 60 receives three Failure Points. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.
The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student
who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student
who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.
Experts' Global Explanation:If the score is between 70 to 80 marks, then Failure Points = 1
If the score is between 60 to 70 marks, then Failure Points = 2
If the score is below 60 marks, then Failure Points = 3
If a student attends a doubt clarification class within two days after the weekly test, then 5 marks are added to the most recent weekly test.
If the total number of Failure Points within 4 consecutive months is at least 9 but less than 12, then the student repeats a thesis.
If the total number of Failure Points within 4 consecutive months is at least 12, then the student repeats the latest project.
Student 1:Since the maximum possible number of Failure Points that can be received in a test is 3 and Student 1 has taken no more than 2 tests within 4 consecutive months, the total number of
Failure Points must be less than 9.Hence,
Student 1 did NOT repeat a thesis.Student 2:Failure points from scoring 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attending a doubt clarification class the next day = Failure points from scoring (58 + 5 = 63) on the weekly test = 2.
Failure points from scoring 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attending a doubt clarification class the same day = Failure points from scoring (52 + 5 = 57) on the weekly test = 3
The last test was not taken within 4 consecutive months of the previous test.
Total Failure Points = 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 < 9.Hence,
Student 2 did NOT repeat a thesis.Student 3:Failure points from scoring 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attending a doubt clarification class three days later = Failure points from scoring 57 on the weekly test = 3
Failure points from scoring 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attending a doubt clarification class on the same day = Failure points from scoring (59 + 5 = 64) on the weekly test = 2
Since all weekly tests were taken within 4 consecutive months,
Total Failure Points = 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 9.Hence,
Student 3 must repeat the thesis but NOT the latest project.Student 4:Failure points from scoring 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021= 2
Since all weekly tests were taken within 4 consecutive months,
Total Failure Points = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 < 9.Hence,
Student 4 did NOT repeat a thesis.Student 5:Failure points from scoring 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020 = 3
Failure points from scoring 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020 = 3
Failure points from scoring 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020 = 2
Failure points from scoring 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020 = 3
Since all weekly tests were taken within 4 consecutive months,
Total Failure Points = 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13 > 12.Hence,
Student 5 must repeat the latest project.Hence, for “Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project” column, “Option 3”, and for “Must repeat the latest project” column, “Option 5” is the correct combination of the answer choices.
