Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months. Failure Points are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test. For any weekly test, a student scoring less than 80 but more than 70 marks receives one Failure Point, a student scoring less than 70 but more than 60 marks receives two Failure Points, and a student scoring less than 60 receives three Failure Points. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.

The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.

This is very tricky question as most of your time is spent in reading, analysing question and answer choices.

Anyways,  in short        -------> Thesis repetition- if alteast 9 failure points within 4 consecutive months
                                  -------> Project repetition- if alteast 12 failure points within 4 consecutive months

Failure points calculation table:
70<P<80 then 1 failure point
60<P<70 then 2 failure point
P<60 then 3 failure point
out of 100 and note that you get + 5 marks if you attend the doubt class within 2 days after exam

so now choosing the options, (I started from 1st and calcualted for all --> dont do this mistake as you can see difference in months is more than 4 in option 1)

adding option 3 values =3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 11points hence repeat thesis
option 5 values = 2 + 3 + 3 + 2+3 = 13 points hence repeat project

Hence correct option is 3 and 5 , pls kudos this and lmk in case of any doubts :)

Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project: 2nd last option
Must repeat the latest project: The last option
The best way to solve this question is to keep in mind how the failure points are awarded to students and that u gotta add 5 marks if the person is attending the doubt class. Just check every options, no other way around.

and 2 would be must repeat thesis but not latest project (A-2nd)

We have who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months.
We got 70-80 receiving 1pts
           60-70 receiving 2pts
           < 60  receiving 3pts
Attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.
So we will now calculate each case to see which received at least 9 pts and which received at least 12 pts.
A. Happened from July 2020 - March 2021 => not within 4 consecutive months

B. Happened from Aug 2020 - March 2021 => not within 4 consecutive months

C. Is the one who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project since they happened within 4 consecutive months and adds up to 10 pts
Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later (cannot count 5 marks since clarify doubt 3 days later not within 2 days); => 3pts
scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020; => 2pts
scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020; => 2 pts
scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. => 3 pts
3 + 2 + 2 + 3 = 10 pts

D. Adds up to 8 pts => did not meet the criteria
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020; => 2 pts
scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020; => 2 pts
scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020; => 2 pts
scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021. => 2 pts

E. Is the one who must repeat the latest project since they all happened within 4 consecutive months and adds up to 13 pts.
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020; => 2 pts
scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020; => 3 pts
scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020; => 3 pts
scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020; => 2 pts
scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020. => 3 pts
2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13 pts

If we properly structure the rules they are quite simple.

70 - 80 marks --> 1 FP (Failure Points)
60 - 70 marks --> 2 FP
less than 60 --> 3 FP
Attend doubt session within 2 days --> + 5 marks.

Atleast 9 within 4 consecutive months --> Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project (1st column)
Atleast 12 within 4 consecutive months --> Must repeat the latest project (2nd column)

Now calculating the total FPs of each rows. Each number in the bracket represents the FPs for that statement respectively.

1st.
Total : (3 + 3) 6 FPs for 2020 and (3 + 3)6 FPs for 2021

2nd.
Total : (2 + 2 + 3) 7 FPs for 2020 and (3) FPs for 2021.

3rd

Claculated the negative marks possible for 4 consecutive months for each student.

1st student : -6
2nd student : -7 to -8
3rd student : -9 to -10
4th student : -8
5th student : -13

Hence
3rd student must repeat a thesis but not the latest project
5th student  must repeat the latest project.

First two options does not include a four month period.
3 option if calculate as per marks will give 9
5 option as per points gives 13

IMO 3 must repeat a thesis and 5 must repeat the latest project.

We need to follow the rules given for each answer option and find the one where failure points (FP) exceed or equal 9 but below 12 and one where it equals or exceeds 12

Option 1: FP = 6. Ignore

Option 2: FP = 7. Ignore

Option 3: FP =9. Answer for student who must repeat thesis but not latest project.

Option 4: FP = 8. Ignore

Option 5: 13. Answer for student who must repeat the latest project.

Therefore, Option 3 for the first and Option 5 for the second.

Lets jot down the details. Otherwise we will get distracted by the minute details
we have to check for cases within 4 consective monnths

1) Repeat Project if 12F or more
2) Repeat thesis if 9F-11F (inclusive)
3)
70-80 : 1F
60-70 : 2F
<60 : 3F
4) doubt session within 2 days increases score by 5 points (can chnage Fs)

Lets go choices one by one:
A) all <60: 12F ( must repeat project)
B) 58 became 62: 2F, next test after 2 months (rej the choice)
C) 57 remained 57 (doubt session happened after 2 days)=3F, 2F, 2F,59 became 64=2F=9F (must repeat thesis but not project)
D)all b/w 60-70: 8F (none)
E) we have 2 august, 2F+3F+3F+2F+3F =13F or 2F+3F+2F+3F=10F. This is a doubtful case.
