In this question the basic requirement for a thesis repetition is 9 failure points in 4 consecutive months & for project repetition is 12 failure points in 4 consecutive months.

for the first condition in question Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later. - 3F

Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020. - 2F

Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. - 2F

Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. -2F

This gives us 9Failure points and this does not qualify for project repetition

for the second condition in question
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020; - 2F

Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020. -3F

Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020. - 3F

Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020. - 2F

Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020.- 3F

This gives us 13 Failure points and this qualifies for project repetition

We are trying to catch the orange team.
What a crazy leading. But, I can't wait for our comeback.
it's coming.
Let's get started with our explanation for this topic on day four:

First step in Two Parts, before reading the text I understand what is the question and what is it asking for:
Rephrase the Question:
Question: This is very wordy question. don't get overwhelm.
the question asks about 2 scenarios: Making project and making thesis.
I can see we are dealing with Logic question. with lots of constraints.
first step is DO NOT do over calculation. try to find a simple shortcut.

Rephrase - Reading and Understanding the text:
Given:
Test<60      60<Test<70      70<Test<80
     3                   2                     1
*Going to a class within 2 days gives you +5 points :)

[?] 8<Thesis<12.    12<Project
We are looking for 2 scenarios that 1 is Thesis and the other is Project.
* It must be in 4 moths in a row.

Solve:
                                                                                          |   8<Thesis<12.  |    12<Project     |
A)         3                3                 3                 3         =12
    -------|--------------|----------------|---------------|--------------     |           X           |           X            |
      2nd/7/20      1st/8/20       3rd/7/21      2nd/8/21
We have a gap here of more than 4 month. - Eliminate.

B)         3                2                 3                 3         =11
    -------|--------------|----------------|---------------|--------------     |           X           |           X            |
          8/20          10/20            10/20           3/21
We have a gap here of 5 month. we only have 3+2+3 = 8
Eliminate.

C)         3                2                 2              3->2       =9
    -------|--------------|----------------|---------------|--------------     |           V           |           X            |
      1st/10/20    4th/10/20      1st/11/20      3rd/12/20 (**+5)
We have exactly 9 points = Thesis.

D)         2                2                 2                 2         =8
    -------|--------------|----------------|---------------|--------------     |           X           |           X            |
We have a only 8 points here - Eliminate. (SHORTCUT)

E)         2            3             3              2             3      =13
    -------|-----------|------------|------------|------------|-----------     |           X           |           V            |
          7/20        8/20        8/20         9/20        10/20
We have exactly 13 points = Project.

We have our answer

THE END
I hope you liked the explanation, I have tried my best here.
Let me know if you have any questions about this question or my explanation.

Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months. Failure Points are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test. For any weekly test, a student scoring less than 80 but more than 70 marks receives one Failure Point, a student scoring less than 70 but more than 60 marks receives two Failure Points, and a student scoring less than 60 receives three Failure Points. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.

The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Analysing options:
A: Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020.
Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020
Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021.
Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021.
These scores are not of consecutive four months. So, we can eliminate this option directly.

B: Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day. = Score (58+5) = 63 Failure points =2
Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020. Failure points = 2
Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day. Score (52 +5) = 57 Failure point = 3
Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021. Failure ponts = 3 (Not in a consecutive 4 month period)
Total score (4 consecutive moths) = 7

C: Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later. : 3 days later, So no 5 point addition. Failure points = 3
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020. Failure points = 2
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. Failure points = 2
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. Score (59+5) = 64, Failure points = 2
Net failure points = 9 points.
So, student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project.

D:
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020. Failure ponts = 2
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020.Failure ponts = 2
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020.Failure ponts = 2
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021.Failure ponts = 2
Net Failure points = 8 points

E: Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020; Failure ponts = 2
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020. Failure ponts = 3
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020. Failure ponts = 3
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020. Failure ponts = 2
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020. Failure ponts = 3
Net Failure points = 13
So, student who must repeat the latest project.

There is a lot of text and rules in the question, here is a summary of the key points -

1. We are only looking for a period of 4 consecutive months
2. If F is number of failure points, then we need 9 <= F < 12 for a thesis re-write but no project redo and F > 12 for a project re-do
3. For a doubt-clearing session to give a student the 5 make-up points, it must be attended within 2 days of the test results being released
4. g= Grade earned     \\ Faiure points received
      80 > g > 70          \\       1
      70 > g > 60           \\      2
      60 > g                    \\     3

Now going through the answer choices, we first look for 4 consecutive months. 3 choices match this, so we evaluate these first. Let F be number of Failure points

Student C
Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later. - [TOO LATE]
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020.
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020.
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day - [score improved to 64]

F = 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 9
we have our first answer since 9 <= F < 12 , sufficient for a thesis re-write but no project redo

Student D
Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020.
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021

F = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8
This student doesn't need to redo anything, good for them , but not who we're interested in

Student E
Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020;
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020.
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020

F = 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13
F > 12, BINGO we have our second answer

Final Answer = Student C, Student E

Student 1:

July 2020: 30 -> 3 Failure Points
August 2020: 59 -> 3 Failure Points
January 2021: 43 -> 3 Failure Points
March 2021: 55 -> 3 Failure Points
Total Failure Points: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Student 2:
August 2020: 58 -> 3 Failure Points (after doubt class: 63, still 3 Failure Points)
October 2020: 68 -> 2 Failure Points
October 2020: 52 -> 3 Failure Points (after doubt class: 57, still 3 Failure Points)
March 2021: 43 -> 3 Failure Points
Total Failure Points: 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 11 (not consecutive)

Student 3:
September 2020: 57 -> 3 Failure Points (after doubt class: 62, 2 Failure Points)
October 2020: 62 -> 2 Failure Points
November 2020: 69 -> 2 Failure Points
December 2020: 59 -> 3 Failure Points (after doubt class: 64, 2 Failure Points)
Total Failure Points: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 (within four consecutive months)

Student 4:
November 2020: 61 -> 2 Failure Points
December 2020: 63 -> 1 Failure Point
December 2020: 69 -> 2 Failure Points
January 2021: 65 -> 2 Failure Points
Total Failure Points: 2 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 7 (within four consecutive months)

Student 5:
July 2020: 63 -> 1 Failure Point
August 2020: 59 -> 3 Failure Points
August 2020: 52 -> 3 Failure Points
September 2020: 68 -> 2 Failure Points
October 2020: 53 -> 3 Failure Points
Total Failure Points: 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 11 (within four consecutive months)

So
Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project: Failure Points >= 9 and < 12, Student 5
Must repeat the latest project: Failure Points >= 12, Student 1

S5 for "Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project"
S1 for "Must repeat the latest project

A - I choose this as Must repeat a thesis but I am not sure because got 6 points in 1 year then in another year, not within consecutive 4 months
B - 2 doubt clarification clears 5 points also March 2021 doesn't add up Failure points as it is more than 4 months
C - 7 Failure points
D - 8 Failure points
E - Got 13 failure points Must repeat the latest project

4 consecutive months
9 failure points and more - must repeat a thesis but not the latest project
12 failure points and more - must repeat the latest project

Let's give each student a number from up to down: 1,2,3,4,5
First student: a gap of more than four months between test in August and in January. If we sum up the failiure points in July and August we receive less than 9 points, same with January and March   - no need to repeat a thesis
Second student: 7 failure points in August and October, than more than 4 months gap and 3 failure points in March - no nees to repeat a thesis
Third student: clarification three days later, thus, no additional 5 marks, 9 failure points in 4 consecutive months - must repeat a thesis but not the latest project
Fourth student: 8 failure points - no need to repeat a thesis
Fifth student: 13 failure points - must repeat the latest project

So, the 3rd student, (who scored 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later; scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020; scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020; scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day), must repeat a thesis but not the latest project.
The 5th student, (who scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020; scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020; scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020; scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020; scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020), must repeat the latest project

Answer:
Must repeat a thesis but
not the latest project: 3rd Option
Must repeat the
latest project: 5th Option

We can quickly glance at options 1 and 2 and eliminate them.

We see option 3 has 9 failure points within 4 consecutive months. Thus it must repeat the thesis but not the latest project.

Also, option 5 has 13 failure points within 4 consecutive months and they haven't bothered taking even a single doubt session as well. Thus they must rightly repeat the latest project.

Analysis of all options:

1st: This option talks about 4 non-consecutive months. Eliminated for both the criteria.
2nd: Same logic as 1st. Eliminated.
3rd: The criteria for 4 consecutive months is checked. And the total sum of failure points here is 3+2+2+2 = 9. Apt for choosing for Must repeat a thesis but
not the latest project.

4th: Talks about 3 consecutive months. Eliminated.
5th: The criteria for 4 consecutive months is checked. And the total sum of failure points here is 2+3+3+2+3 = 13. Apt for choosing for Must repeat the
latest project.

  • OPTION 1 as it doesn't satifsfy above condition, eliminated
  • OPTION 2 = failure points < 9 eliminated
  • OPTION 3
    • Failure points = 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 9 points
  • OPTION 4
    • Failure points = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 points eliminated
  • OPTION 5
