To determine if any of the students will need to repeat a thesis or a project based on Professor Emet's criteria, we will calculate the Failure Points accumulated by each student within any four consecutive months.

### Failure Points Criteria:

- **Less than 80 but more than 70 marks:** 1 Failure Point
- **Less than 70 but more than 60 marks:** 2 Failure Points
- **Less than 60 marks:** 3 Failure Points

If a student attends a doubt clarification class, they can make up 5 marks on the most recent weekly test, potentially changing their Failure Points for that test.

### Analysis of Each Student

#### Student 1:
1. **July 2020 (Second week)**: Scored 30 (3 Failure Points)
2. **August 2020 (First week)**: Scored 59 (3 Failure Points)
3. **January 2021 (Third week)**: Scored 43 (3 Failure Points)
4. **March 2021 (Second week)**: Scored 55 (3 Failure Points)

Within any four consecutive months:
- From July 2020 to October 2020: 3 (July) + 3 (August) = 6 points
- From December 2020 to March 2021: 3 (January) + 3 (March) = 6 points

**Conclusion**: Student 1 does not reach the 9 Failure Points in any four consecutive months.

#### Student 2:
1. **August 2020 (First week)**: Scored 58, attended class, adjusted to 63 (Adjusted to 2 Failure Points,)
2. **October 2020 (First week)**: Scored 68 (2 Failure Points)
3. **October 2020 (Second week)**: Scored 52, attended class, adjusted to 57 (3 Failure Points)
4. **March 2021 (Fourth week)**: Scored 43 (3 Failure Points)

Within any four consecutive months:
- From August 2020 to November 2020: 2 (August) + 2 (October) + 3 (October) = 7 points
- From December 2020 to March 2021: 3 (March) = 3 points

**Conclusion**: Student 2 does not reach the 9 Failure Points in any four consecutive months.

#### Student 3:
1. **September 2020 (First week)**: Scored 57, attended class too late, no adjustment (3 Failure Points)
2. **October 2020 (Fourth week)**: Scored 62 (2 Failure Points)
3. **November 2020 (First week)**: Scored 69 (2 Failure Points)
4. **December 2020 (Third week)**: Scored 59, attended class, adjusted to 64 (3 Failure Points, adjusted to 2)

Within any four consecutive months:
- From September 2020 to December 2020: 3 (September) + 2 (October) + 2 (November) + 2 (December) = 9 points

**Conclusion**: Student 3 accumulates 9 Failure Points from September to December 2020. Therefore, Student 3 needs to repeat the thesis.

#### Student 4:
1. **November 2020 (Second week)**: Scored 61 (2 Failure Points)
2. **December 2020 (Second week)**: Scored 63 (2 Failure Points)
3. **December 2020 (Third week)**: Scored 69 (2 Failure Points)
4. **January 2021 (Second week)**: Scored 65 (2 Failure Points)

Within any four consecutive months:
- From November 2020 to February 2021: 2 (November) + 2 (December) + 2 (December) + 2 (January) = 8 points

**Conclusion**: Student 4 does not reach the 9 Failure Points in any four consecutive months.

#### Student 5:
1. **July 2020 (Fourth week)**: Scored 63 (2 Failure Points)
2. **August 2020 (Second week)**: Scored 59 (3 Failure Points)
3. **August 2020 (Fourth week)**: Scored 52 (3 Failure Points)
4. **September 2020 (Third week)**: Scored 68 (2 Failure Points)
5. **October 2020 (First week)**: Scored 53 (3 Failure Points)

Within any four consecutive months:
- From July 2020 to October 2020: 2 (July) + 6 (August) + 2 (September) + 2 (October) = 12 points

**Conclusion**: Student 5 accumulates 12 Failure Points from August to October 2020. Therefore, Student 5 needs to repeat the project.

### Summary:
- **Student 1**: No repeats required.
- **Student 2**: No repeats required.
- **Student 3**: Needs to repeat the thesis.
- **Student 4**: No repeats required.
- **Student 5**: Needs to repeat the project.

Lets analyse each student case FP for each student :
Student 1:
The months are too spread out, not meeting the threshold of 9 FP in any four-month period.

Student 2:

August 2020: 2 FP
October 2020: 2 FP
October 2020: 3 FP
March 2021: 3 FP

The months are too spread out, not meeting the threshold of 9 FP in any four-month period.

Student 3:

September 2020: 3 FP (doubt clarification invalid)
October 2020: 2 FP
November 2020: 2 FP
December 2020: 2 FP
Total: 2+2+2+3 = 9 FP (Must repeat a thesis but not the latest project)

Student 4:

November 2020: 2 FP
December 2020: 2 FP
December 2020: 2 FP
January 2021: 2 FP
Total: 2+2+2+2 = 8 FP (Not sufficient for thesis or project)

Student 5:

July 2020: 2 FP
August 2020: 6 FP
September 2020: 2 FP
October 2020: 3 FP
Total: 2+6+2+3 = 13 FP (Must repeat the latest project)

Answer:
Student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project: Student 3
Student who must repeat the latest project: Student 5

Professor Emet follows strict grading criteria for her doctorate students. Each of her students repeats a thesis upon receiving at least 9 Failure Points within any four consecutive months and repeats the latest project upon receiving at least 12 Failure Points within any four consecutive months. Failure Points are received for poor performance on a 100-marks weekly test. For any weekly test, a student scoring less than 80 but more than 70 marks receives one Failure Point, a student scoring less than 70 but more than 60 marks receives two Failure Points, and a student scoring less than 60 receives three Failure Points. A student may attend a doubt clarification class to make up for 5 marks on the most recent weekly test. The doubt clarification class must be attended within two days after the weekly test results are published.

The table contains descriptions of the 5 students of Professor Emet. In each case, the student had no other Failure Points and attended no additional doubt clarification classes. In the table, select a description of a student who must repeat a thesis but not the latest project, and select a description of a student who must repeat the latest project. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Must repeat a thesis but
not the latest project: Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020.
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021.

Failure Points 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 9 - repeat thesis >=9 but <12

Must repeat the
latest project: Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020;
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020.
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020.

Failure points - 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13 since > 12 repeat project

Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day
  • First weekly test of September 2020: 57 marks

  • First weekly test of November 2020: 69 marks
    • Points: 2 (below 70)
  • Third weekly test of December 2020: 59 marks
    • Points: 3 (below 60; attended class marks is make up by 5 , so reduces to 2 points)

    • Points: 2 (below 70)
  • First weekly test of October 2020: 53 marks
    • Points: 3 (below 60)
Four consecutive months analysis:

  • July to October 2020:
    • Points: 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 13
Conclusion for Student 5:

  • July to October 2020: 13 points (Student 5 must repeat the latest project).

1st student:
There are two groups of four consecutive months. In the first one he has 6 (3+3) Failure Points and in the second one he also has 6 (3+3) Failure Points.

2nd student:
There are two groups of four consecutive months. In the first one he has 7 (2+2+3) Failure Points and in the second one he has 3 (3) Failure Points.

3rd student:
There is one group of four consecutive months. He has 9 (3+2+2+2) Failure Points.
Because he attended a doubt clarification class three days later, that class does not count to make up for 5 marks.
So he must repeat a thesis.

4th student:
There is one group of four consecutive months. He has 8 (2+2+2+2) Failure Points.

5th student:
There is one group of four consecutive months. He has 13 (2+3+3+2+3) Failure Points.
So he must repeat the latest project

repeat Project on 12 F-points within 4 months
Score: 70-80 then 1F
60-70 then 2F
<60 then 3F
Can do +5 in score for latest test if taken doubt class within 2 days

Start calculating for each of the options...

Option C: 3F+2F+2F+3F (but taken doubt class.. so 59 becomes 64). New Points: 3F+2F+2F+2F = 9F ; Hence repeat thesis

Option E: 2F+3F+3F+2F+3F = 13F >12F ; Hence repeat Project

Solution: This question is simply a matter of going through each answer choice carefully. See below.

Must repeat a thesis but
not the latest projectMust repeat the
latest project Scored 30 on the second weekly test of July 2020.
Scored 59 on the first weekly test of August 2020
Scored 43 on the third weekly test of January 2021.
Scored 55 on the second weekly test of March 2021.

We do not have any four-consecutive-month period where the student gets at least 9 points. Therefore, no repeat. Scored 58 on the first weekly test of August 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the next day.
Scored 68 on the first weekly test of October 2020.
Scored 52 on the second weekly test of October 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class the same day.
Scored 43 on the fourth weekly test of March 2021.

March is too far off, so we don't need to consider it in our calculation. The student only gets 6 points for August—October period: also no repeat. Score 57 on the first weekly test of September 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class three days later. (3 points because attended the clarification class too late)
Scored 62 on the fourth weekly test of October 2020. (2 points)
Scored 69 on the first weekly test of November 2020. (2 points)
Scored 59 on the third weekly test of December 2020 and attended a doubt clarification class on the same day. (2 points, attended the doubt clarification class in time)

This gives a total of 9 points over the September—December period, thus the student must repeat the thesis.

Scored 61 on the second weekly test of November 2020.
Scored 63 on the second weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 69 on the third weekly test of December 2020.
Scored 65 on the second weekly test of January 2021.

This gives a total of 8 points, the student does not have to repeat anything. Scored 63 on the fourth weekly test of July 2020;
Scored 59 on the second weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 52 on the fourth weekly test of August 2020.
Scored 68 on the third weekly test of September 2020.
Scored 53 on the first weekly test of October 2020.

This gives a total of 12 points. Importantly, notice that the student got the score of 63 in the fourth week of July 2020. Therefore, this makes the four-consecutive-month period include the 53 from the first weekly test of October. This student has to repeat the project.

When you break it down, the task is pretty simple: as getting 9 or even 12 error points is rather 'difficult', we need to scan the options for those where the test results are the worst - and also for those, where the span of the tests is within 4 months.

By these criteria, we can aready eliminate A (Jan-Mar gap) and B (Oct-Mar gap).

As for the remaining ones, D looks the simplest: 4 tests, each awarding 2 failure points, 8 total. No remediation either. So, its not enough for any of the reprimands duggested by the professor, and this can be eliminated.

Now, between C and E, it's pretty clear that E will have more failure points because of 5 tests written. Therefore, E is the student who will repeat the latest project (12-point requirement).
What's left with ome better scores and some remediation is C - and this student will have to repeat a thesis only (with 9 points exactly).
