Hi azoz7,

You've done enough studying to know that you need to work on your CR skills, which is good. However, there might actually be BIGGER issues that you should focus on first.

Since you've been studying for a month, you really MUST plan to take FULL-LENGTH CATs at regular intervals. This is the only way to truly track your progress. As such, you should plan to take one soon. Make sure to take the FULL CAT (with the Essay and IR sections) in a realistic fashion. Once you have that score result, you should post back here. Until we have that information, we have no way of knowing whether your studies are properly focused or not - and we don't know if you should be focused on some other category before you do additional work on CR.

Hello,

I started preparing for the GMAT, but when I started answering the Critical Reasoning questions, I noticed that I don't understand some of the sentence or answers. Moreover, my TOEFL score is 98/120, so is my TOEFL score good enough to score above 700 on the GMAT and what I need to understand the CR and other verbal questions is more practice on the GMAT questions?

Best,

Hi azoz7,

GMAT and TOEFL are completely different tests and the scores cannot be related.
For the GMAT, you need to build the concepts/fundamentals before you jump in solving the problems. You can do so by choosing one of the following ways:

1. In person classes/private tutoring
2. Online classes
3. Self paced online preparatory course
4. Book heavy approach

Whatever you choose, make sure that you choose one. Because GMAT tests you on some concepts and fundamentals that you can learn from a course. Most of the preparatory companies including ours offer a free trial of our course. You can take the trial and see if the course suits your needs.

In addition to the preparatory material, buy the Official Guides(both the Official Guide and the Verbal Review), Question Pack 1 and the 4 official mock CATs. They should be an indispensable part of your preparation.

You need close to 3 months to prepare well for the GMAT.

1. Understand the concepts and fundamentals before jumping into problem solving
2. Solve full length CATs including AWA and IR. You can get two free GMAT Prep mock CATs and can purchase two more from mba.com
3. Make sure you solve the official questions from the Official Guide

I took the CAT exam from MBA com. I am very disappointed in my score

Quant 8th percentile
Verbal 7th percentile
IR 37th percentile

AWA

"Motorcycle X has been manufactured in the United States for more than 70 years. Although one foreign company has copied the motorcycle and is selling it for less, the company has failed to attract motorcycle X customers-some say because its product lacks the exceptionally loud noise made by motorcycle X. But there must be some other explanation. After all, foreign cars tend to be quieter than similar American-made cars, but they sell at least as well. Also, television advertisements for motorcycle X highlight its durability and sleek lines, not its noisiness, and the ads typically have voice-overs or rock music rather than engine-roar on the sound track."

My analysis

The author argues that the loud noise is not the explination why the company, which copied the motorcycle X design, has failed to attract the motercycle customers, he provides two evidance why the loud noise is not the reason for failing to attract X's customers. The two reasons are foreing cars are quieter than American-made car and the advertisments for the motorcycle do not promote the noisiness.

The author is assuming in the first evidance that the car customers and motorcycle customers are similar in their preferences, because car customers do not look for the noisiness as a feature of the car, maybe they are concern about the maintinance costs, which could be similar between the foreing cars and the American-made cars. Therefore, the author evidance does not explain why the noise is not the reason why customers by motorcycle X.

The second assumption is that the company does not promote the noise of engine in its TV advertisments for motorcycle X, but this does not mean the TV ads are the only mean of promotion for the motorcycle. The company might promote the motorcycle engine noisiness in other ad means, such as motorcycle conventions, which could attract more customers to the motorcycle.

Finally, the author did not support the provided evidance to strenghten his argument, and other interpetations of the same evidance could explain why the foreign company failed to attract motorcycle X customers.

End

I think you are making a mistake by just concentrating on CR. Looking at your CAT tells us that other parts are also lacking so you should try to improve fundamentals first, especially quant. If you continue to spend one month for just one part of the GMAT your goal of 700+ in 3 months is really in danger and I don't think you are going to hit that target if you continue with this approach. I would really suggest that you take a course (I would recommend empowergmat), which gives you a clear study plan, so your leaning becomes more structured.

Hi azoz7,

Based on this initial CAT result, you have a LOT of work to do - in BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections - to hit your score goal. Since you're not planning to apply to Business School until 2018, you have plenty of time to study though, which is good. You will likely need at least another 3 months of consistent, guided study and you would likely find it beneficial to invest in a GMAT Course of some kind (either Guided Self-Study or Instructor-Led). Most GMAT Companies offer some type of free materials (practice problems, Trial Accounts, videos, etc.) that you can use to 'test out' a product before you buy it. We have a variety of those resources at our site (https://www.empowergmat.com). I suggest that you take advantage of all of them then choose the one that best matches your personality, timeline and budget.

1) Did you answer all of the questions in the Quant and Verbal sections of this CAT?
