Hi cpat,

I’m sorry to hear about how things went with your GMAT. Since you were scoring so high on your practice exams, I do think you are capable of scoring higher on the GMAT. That said, you first should figure out whether you plan to give the GMAT one more shot. If you do, and want some advice on how to move forward, feel free to reach back out. Here is also a helpful article:

Why Was My GMAT Score Lower Than My Practice Test Scores?

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I really appreciate it. I am just conflicted as to whether it will look bad to reinstate this 650 score with the lower quant but higher verbal vs. just submitting a 660 with a more even split. I don't know how often schools take your best section score from different tests.

As for retaking it / figuring out quant, I am conflicted. I do usually feel like I am struggling a lot on the quant problems but I can't quite pin down what went wrong on this test. There were some problems I know I nailed that were easy and others that I would start but couldn't get the "trick". A lot of the times the problems I struggled with were ones I usually struggle with, topics I know to be weaknesses. I should have bailed on one that I took way too much time on. On the online exam I definitely felt like I was failing and got most problems wrong. I've been studying for this exam since December and after it was canceled in March and again in May I feel like I have "peaked" and am wondering if my time is better spent on essays / other parts of my applications vs. studying for the GMAT.

Hi cpat,

First off, your initial 660/Q43 is a solid Score, so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School (it would also likely be far better for your applications than your 650/Q37 would be). As such, an additional retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement.

There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

If you do choose to retest, then you would not necessarily need to spend a lot of additional study time before doing so. You have an incredibly strong overall Verbal ability, so we would just need to make some adjustments to how you 'see' (and respond to) the Quant section. You do NOT need to be a 'math genius' to pick up a bunch of points in that section, but you will have to focus on learning and practicing the proper Tactics and training to take advantage of all of the built-in patterns that appear every day on the Official GMAT.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly at any time.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Thanks everyone! Quick update here - I did end up retaking it and got a 700, 41 verbal and 45 quant which although low on the quant side, is good enough for me! For anyone who is struggling, taking a break is not a bad thing! I did not study for a month after my 650 and took a big break, then studied for a week and took the exam way more relaxed than I was before.

So I was wondering, if I appear for a GMAT online test, do I need to select my desired B schools (for sending the scores) at the time of the test, or upto 48 hours after I receive my official score report, if I do want it to be done for free? I am seeing both kinds of responses on every forum.

Hi JoseDelgado,

It's within 48 hours of receiving the official score for the online version of the GMAT. Where did you see information to the contrary?

Hello AjiteshArun,
I just wanted to confirm. The contradicting info might have been for the in person exam. The article simply mentioned "GMAT", instead of specifying whether it was the online or in-person format.

Got it. That article may have been written before the introduction of the online GMAT, or maybe they're using "GMAT" to refer to the regular GMAT, which is what we see on mba.com as well.

All the best.
