I endorse the PSA.

The funny thing is i read many student debriefs and thought it wasn’t that bad, but sitting there and taking the test, then having someone interrupt me during a question, allowed me to empathize more with others.

I really think this experience further validates how little I respect GMAC. Also, I really think that people should just take the GRE and then apply with it.

Look at it this way. If a large majority of applicants apply with the GRE, then two things will likely happen:
1. schools will have no choice but evaluate applicants who are applying with the GRE
2. GMAC will wake up and perhaps start to be more proactive than reactive.
- Simple things such as training their offshore proctors on exam etiquette and when interrupting is bad can help. Instead, GMAC defaults to some rudimentary policy, claiming ‘our policy says we can do what we want during the exam ....’
- allowing GMAT Online retakes
- providing more questions
- providing more official practice tests etc...

True, but one significant difference between the At-Home GRE and the GMAT Online is that the GRE allows you to skip questions and go back, and the GMAT does not, which can add to test anxiety if you're stuck on a particular question that doesn't make sense.

Another consideration is that the GMAT Online is currently a one-shot deal only (no retakes allowed), whereas the At-Home GRE allows retakes every 21 days (up to 5 exams per year, with no lifetime limit).

I think most of us can agree that allowing retakes is a good thing when it comes to tackling test-day nerves and anxiety: if your first (or second or third, or fourth!) attempt at the At-Home GRE doesn't go well, then you can schedule another attempt after 21 days, and send only your best score to schools using GRE ScoreSelect, but again, retakes are not yet an option with the GMAT Online.

Both exams have their own set of anxiety-inducing aspects. Seeing a whole list of questions at one go and knowing that there is only a small amount of time for the entire set that needs to completed accurately to get a higher difficulty second section are newer challenges compared to those on the GMAT. You can skip some questions on the GMAT and still score very well, especially if the skipped questions were harder or experimental. You are also able to focus on only one question at a time and not get distracted as is possible on the GRE.

If the GMAT online test goes badly, you know you will be able to take an in-person test very soon. There is no waiting period. The GRE will make you wait for three weeks irrespective of whether you took the at-home or the in-person version of the test. For many applicants, that waiting period can be detrimental both for scoring well and for getting scores in time.

Allowing retakes is essential for these sorts of tests. If anxiety aspects harm test scores, then tests cannot be accurately guaged for their content, since anxiety are separate aspects from the content.

IMO, GRE and GMAT test some similar and some different skills. Comparisons of these tests are tricky.

I agree with many things that you have said. GMAC have been appallingly bad and perhaps even disingenuous. They have floundered badly whereas ETS have acted with insight and speed. GMAC's reactive responses and their excuses of "we are looking at market feedback" demonstrate lack of good strategies. Market analyses should have been done thoroughly long time ago. We live in uncertain times and there is some room for improvement, but we still expect better conduct from agencies.

In defense of proctors, many do have poor internet connections. They are overburdened. They have to follow what they are ordered to do and have to do what they see on their screens. If they are not able to see that a person is back from break or the desk spaces were not checked again, they will have to do those things. They do not follow how many questions are left and so on. These are secondary aspects to their main job requirements which are to maintain the integrity of the test.

Hi All,

Would like to ask these questions as my GMAT Online Exam is coming up.

1. Should I uninstall my antivirus software (Kaspersky) so that it does not mess around with PearsonVUE software?
2. Should I have my phone turned on during my exam ? Although not within reach so that Proctor can contact me if any issues - thought to turn off so that am not disturbed.
3. I use laptop camera but see that sometimes being asked to move the camera around. So should I really buy an external camera.
Ran the system check and laptop camera is ok.

Thanks,
Prabhakar

Hello Prabhakar,
First up, All the best for your exam.
To address your concerns, here is my take:
1. You need not uninstall anything from your system. After you download the OnVue, you just need to give the necessary permissions or access (Depends on the OS you are using)
2. Have your phone turned on, preferably on silent mode, so that you will not be disturbed during the exam by some unwanted calls or other notifications. Having your phone is really important, for it is the primary point of contact in case of any unforeseen circumstances, such as power outage etc. The proctor will contact you through the same.
3. I would not recommend to get an external camera. However, it is completely your call. In my opinion, there should not be any problem with the laptop camera as well.

Regards

Thank you for your response. This helps.
My OS is Windows 10 - was just not sure if any notifications which pops up from Kaspersky will be of hinderance.
Yes, will leave my phone on (and move to silent/do not disturb mode).

I know what you mean by "skip" (you mean "guess and move on"), but let's be clear with our language here: you are not allowed to skip any questions on the GMAT, nor are you allowed to go back--both of which are options on the GRE.

You are welcome. Even if you were to get any notifications while you take your exam, that should not be a problem (for the proctor at least). And regarding the phone, please make sure that you put it in silent mode and not in DND, because you might just forget to switch off the DND in case of a power outage and end up missing the call from the proctor. So, it is always better to put it in silent, upside down, so that you do not get distracted during the exam.

"Skip" was used colloquially. Skipped a question on GMAT is equivalent to picking an option, perhaps at random, and moving forward to the next question.

I think MGMAT and Veritas also give you the option to use online whiteboard.

You can try the Manhattan mocks. The first mock is free. It has an online whiteboard option...

Hi all,

Just wanted to tell you all my experience with the GMAT Online exam.
I think everyone planning to take the Online exam should read this and be prepared.

Check-in:
I scheduled my exam for 7.30 am, so I logged onto the exam at 7.15 am. The check-in took about 5-7 minutes, it was really easy.
However, one thing that was kind of nerve wracking was that I waited about 25 minutes after check-in for the exam to begin.
Also remember, while waiting, you're supposed to sit at your exam desk and obey all exam rules, and you don't know how long you will wait for. Added bonus was that the waiting screen says "we'll contact you via chat or a call if there are any issues" while waiting. And another nerve wracking thing is I had my phone on silent, far away and faced down, and because I didn't know what they meant with the chat feature (because there are no signs on the screen), I was really worried after 10-15 mintes that something was wrong, and they were calling me, and that I wasn't seeing their call.
Anyhow, after 25 minutes or so, the exam begin...

During the exam, first issue:
The exam itself was a normal experience right up until the IR part (which is the last section)
During IR, I believe after my 5th question, the screen went darker and said "Connection lost, we're trying to reconnect" - I was horrified.
I waited 5 minutes or so with this msg, on the verge of crying.
After 5 minutes, I ran to my phone to call GMAT. I looked at my phone screen and no one had called me up until that point.
Because I was worried about my exam getting cancelled because I got my phone, I showed the webcam (which still said it was recording?) all the screens I was going through to reach GMAT's customer service phone number.
Right at that moment, my phone rang. The proctor was on the other side. He said "Why are you on your phone" and I started crying and explaining what had been happening.
Resolving the issue took like another 15 minutes. It was terrible, and until it was resolved, I didnt get any assurance that the issue could be resolved.
Moreover, (I'm not gonna go into the details of the issue resolution) the proctor was always on the phone with me and he was really kind but he had no idea how to resolve the issue, I ended up figuring it out myself...

During the exam, the second issue:
I resumed my exam afterwards, but I was very stressed out.
Thankfully, the timer had stopped while we were trying to solve the issue so I hadn't official lost any precious minutes - just lost my entire concentration.
Anyway, during the last 2 questions of the IR section, the chat screen keep popping up and closing out the entire screen. IDK why this happened, but it popped up like 10 times and I had like 2 minutes for the last 2 questions.

After the exam:
I called GMAT to ask if my exam was cancelled, they said it was not.
I'm still waiting to hear back regarding my score (it's only been 3 days, so that's normal) - got a 720

That was my experience. I would never take the Online exam ever again.

Best,
A

PS - Edited to include my score.

Sorry to hear your experience. Sounds terrible. The only silver lining in this is that this happened in IR section and you were done with main sections. I had pretty smooth experience with mine. But cannot imagine the stress if something like happens, considering online format is so so so so new for everyone and due to lack of precedents. Good luck for the score.

My local test center is open with a requirement to wear a mask. Does this mean that I cannot take the GMAT online version? Thank you in advance.
