It really depends on your needs. Does personal training work? Sure it does - you have a person watching every move and correcting you as soon as you miss a step. It is expensive however. That's pretty much what private tutoring is. It's a class that's customized specifically for your needs. It can be effective and even more economical than taking an in person course, for example, because the course will cover everything and will take nine or 10 weeks but a tutor can only focus on your specific weaknesses and can help you within days or weeks.
One problem with private tutoring is that it's expensive. Manhattan and veritas charge about $250 per hour. In comparison their courses cost about $1500 for 9 3-hour sessions.
Usually people hire private tutors only when they need extra help or when they're really stuck and need someone to help them out in the area that just is not working. It's silly to take a full course for that and it may not even work so that's where private tutors come in.
One word of advice, if you're going to spend the big bucks and hire a private tutor, get a good one. Find a reputable one or someone from Manhattan or veritas.
