Rohan's Plushie Emporium sells exactly two types of teddy bear: grizzly bears and polar bears. Last month, Rohan sold 80 teddy bears for a total of €2,800. (A) €35
(B) €40
(C) €50
(D) €60
(E) €65

Committee member: Last week, committee members were encouraged to nominate candidates for the position of committee chairperson. So far, seven members have submitted nominations. That means we can expect contentious lead-up to the election. After all, such contention always occurs before an election whenever there are more than three candidates for any elected position.

Which of the following would be most useful to know in order to evaluate the likelihood of the committee member’s prediction?

(A) Whether any of the nominated members are known for arguing frequently with other members

(B) Whether a candidate can be nominated by more than one committee member

(C) Whether any more nominations for chairperson will be made

(D) Whether members were allowed to nominate themselves for chairperson

(E) Whether there has ever been contention before an election with only two candidates

Корkе: In the past ten years, most of the new clothes that I have purchased have fallen apart within a few short years. However, all of the clothes that I have purchased at vintage clothing shops are still in excellent condition, despite the fact that they were all over thirty years old at the time that I bought them. Clearly, clothes are not manufactured as well today as they were when those vintage clothes were made.

Which of the following is a weakness in the argument above?

(A) It fails to demonstrate that the clothes manufactured thirty years ago were of higher quality than clothes of all other eras.

(B) It neglects the possibility that the clothes of thirty years ago, when prices are adjusted for inflation, cost more than clothes manufactured today.

(C) It confuses the number of clothing items sold with the proportion of those items that are no longer useful.

(D) It does not explain why clothing manufacturing standards have fallen over time.

(E) It fails to take into account clothes made over thirty years ago that are no longer fit for sale.

If Lena, Marco, and Oliver took turns paddling a canoe for the entire 1,120-meter route from East Dock to Pine Landing, with exactly one person paddling at a time, who paddled the greatest distance?

(1) Lena paddled 2 hours longer than Marco, and their average (arithmetic mean) speeds were 70 meters per hour and 50 meters per hour, respectively.
(2) Oliver paddled for 10 hours at an average (arithmetic mean) speed of 50 meters per hour.

Earlier this year, our city’s three main reservoirs had unusually low water levels. As a result, city officials initiated a program that encouraged residents to reduce their water usage by 20 percent. Since the program was announced, the water level at all three reservoirs has returned to normal. Our city officials should be applauded for their role in preventing a crisis.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the efficacy of the officials’ program?

(A) The current water level in the reservoirs is lower than it was at the same time last year.

(B) Other nearby reservoirs recovered from lower water levels this year, even though those reservoirs provide water to cities that did not enact water restriction policies.

(C) Residents reduced their water usage for lawn maintenance significantly more than they did for washing clothes.

(D) Imposing stiff penalties on residents who did not conserve water would have resulted in even higher water levels in the reservoirs.

(E) Water usage in the city dropped steadily during the first two weeks of the program before leveling off.

To attract new visitors, the local zoo is planning to offer new experiences. One proposal involves allowing visitors to assist in feeding the big cats, such as the lions and the tigers. However, unlike the zookeepers, visitors do not spend time interacting with the cats and becoming familiar to them. Enacting this plan would be like inviting people to enter the home of a well-armed stranger without knocking.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most strengthen the argument?

(A) Visitors have not spent as much time studying the behavior of big cats as the zookeepers have.

(B) Those who would be most interested in opportunities to assist in feeding big cats are already regular visitors and would not bring along new visitors.

(C) Burglars who are attacked by an occupant during a home invasion usually incur serious injuries requiring emergency treatment.

(D) People who visit zoos have less experience interacting with wild animals than do people who do not visit zoos.

(E) Feeding big cats requires entering their habitat, which can only be done safely after previous interaction with the animals.

A meal-kit service charges $16 to deliver the first meal-kit box in an order and $2 for each additional meal-kit box in the same order. If Jordan placed an order of at least one meal-kit box, did the order include more than 30 meal-kit boxes?

(1) If the order had included 4 additional meal-kit boxes, the delivery charge would have been more than $76.
(2) The average (arithmetic mean) delivery charge per meal-kit box in the order was $2.50.

Paleontologists have difficulty accurately reconstructing early Cambrian ecosystems, since most animal species in the early Cambrian era lacked hardened body parts. When an animal dies, its soft parts decayed very rapidly, leaving only the harder parts, typically bones, teeth, or shell. If the animal is buried quickly enough after death, these parts can become fossilized. If an animal lacked hardened body parts, its remains only become fossilized under exceptional circumstances.

If the above is true, which of the following can be properly concluded from these statements?

A. When reconstructing an early Cambrian ecosystem, paleontologists must take into account that some animals that lived in that ecosystem may have left no trace in the fossil record.

B. There were more living species with hardened body parts than with only soft body parts in the early Cambrian era.

Techniques to increase productivity in the performance of discrete tasks, by requiring less human labor in each step of the production process, are widely utilized. Consultants on productivity enhancement point out, however, that although these techniques achieve their specific goal, they are not without drawbacks. They often instill enough resentment in the workforce eventually to lead to a slowdown in the production process as a whole.

Which of the following can be reasonably inferred from the statements above?

A. Productivity enhancement techniques do not attain their intended purpose and should not be employed in the workplace.

B. The fact that productivity enhancement techniques are so widely employed has led to a decline in the ability of American businesses to compete abroad.

C. If productivity enhancement consultants continue to utilize these techniques, complete work stoppages will eventually result.

D. Ironically, an increase in the productivity of discrete tasks may result in a decrease in the productivity of the whole production process.

E. Production managers are dissatisfied with the efforts that productivity enhancement consultants have made to increase productivity.
