Dean of the Imperial College, W wants to schedule a one-hour meeting on Tuesday for himself and three other faculty members, X, Y, and Z. Is there a one-hour period on Tuesday that is open for all four members?

(1) On Tuesday W and X have an open period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. - Insufficient as we don't know about Y and Z.

(2) On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - Insufficient as we don't know about X and W.

1) + 2)

W & X - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Y - 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m & Z - 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m
They can arrange 9 am to 10 am but Y don't have that time.
As Y has no relevant time in the and W, Z & X has day time, they can't meet up.
Insufficient.

IMO ANS:E

Not sure i can assume that the working hours are only 8- 5 as it is not specifically provided.

1) Just tells us WX schedule, with out Y and Z data this is insufficient

2) WX is missing , with out Y and X this is insufficient

combining together, we know w/X/Y/Z schedule howeever it is not full schedule.

Given: Dean of the Imperial College, W wants to schedule a one-hour meeting on Tuesday for himself and three other faculty members, X, Y, and Z.
Asked: Is there a one-hour period on Tuesday that is open for all four members?

Screenshot 2020-04-26 at 4.25.26 PM.png [ 17.53 KiB | Viewed 2529 times ]
There is no information about Y & Z availability for one-hour open period.
NOT SUFFICIENT

(2) On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Since there is no overlap of one-hour open period in Y & Z schedule
There is no one-hour period on Tuesday that is open for all four members.
SUFFICIENT

(1) On Tuesday, W and X have an open period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. No information about Y and Z. Not sufficient.

(2) On Tuesday, Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We do not have any information about W and X. However, since Y and Z do not have common open periods together, such a one-hour meeting on tuesday cannot be scheduled involving all the 4 members. Sufficient.

Answer is B

Since Z's open period ends when Y's open period starts, they both won't be able to attend the meeting at the same time and thus the meeting won't be able to take place with all attendees for an hour.

On Tuesday W and X have an open period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
so w & x can meet from 9-12 noon ; no info about Y & Z ; insufficient
#2
On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
so y can come from 10 am to 1 pm and Z can come from 8 am to 10 am
we can say that timing of Y & Z do not overlap as Z is free till 10 am and Y has open period from 10 am
so there is no open period

IMO B

This is a simple question but there is too much reading to do.
The task is to find a common slot for w,x,y, and z.
1) Statement one tells us about the free slot for w and x but does not tell anything about the free slot for y and z.
Hence Statement 1 is insufficient.
2) Statement two tells us about the free slot for y and z which is 10 to 1 and 8 to 10 respectively. It clearly means that there is no common free slot between y and z.
The question is to find a common slot between w,x,y, and z. Therefore the answer is NO they do not have a common slot. Statement 2 is sufficient.

Statement B alone is sufficient to answer the question. Y is free from 10 to 1 but Z is only free from 8 to 10. There are no common timings between Y an z which is sufficient to show all 4 members are not free for one hour at the same time.

(2) On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Lets start with Statement 2 -
There is no overlapping free slot for Y and Z i.e. when both are free. Hence they cannot attend meeting together ever on Tuesday.
Hence Statement 2 is sufficient.

Statement 1-
There is overlapping free slot for w and x i.e. when both are free from 9 am to 12 pm. Hence they can attend meeting together on Tuesday. But we do not have any info on Y and Z. Statement 1 is not sufficient.

Hence B is the answer

We need to check the schedule of all 4 attendees (W, X, Y and Z) on Tuesday.

Statement 1: Provides schedule details of only 2 attendees (W and X). - Insufficient
Statement 2: Provides schedule details of only 2 attendees (Y and Z). - Insufficient

Together the 2 statements provide schedule details of all 4 attendees. - Sufficient

Dean of the Imperial College, W wants to schedule a one-hour meeting on Tuesday for himself and three other faculty members, X, Y, and Z. Is there a one-hour period on Tuesday that is open for all four members?

(Statement1): On Tuesday W and X have an open period from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
No info about whether Y and Z could have one hour open period for that meeting.
Insufficient.

(Statement2): On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Y - from 10 a.m to 1 p.m
Z - from 8 a.m to 10 a.m
--> Both of them don't have the common 1 hour open period.
W cannot schedule a meeting for them (ALWAYS NO).
Sufficient

Answer (B).

(2) On Tuesday Y has an open period from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Z has an open period from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Some open periods are mentioned, but it is not mentioned that these are the only open periods. As GMAT is mostly a reasoning exam, I believe GMAC will either specifically mention that these are the only open periods or consider E correct.

For option B, it is not written as "the only open period for Y is from 10 to 12", though both of them are unavailable given the information, there could be a different time slot as per the questions requirement.

The answer does not tell us that these are the only open period.

so W X Y Z could have open period from 15.00-16.00 and we do not know that.
