Could someone evaluate my profile for IIMB EPGP?

Age : 32 yo male
10th : 82%
12th: 77 %
B. Tech in Electronics and communication, 8.28
M. Tech in software systems (BITS PILANI) : 8.3

work experience :
1. 1.8 years in Tata consultancy services, asst systems engineer

2. 10 years in Indian Air Force as flight engineer.
Managed flying operations of Sukhoi 30 fighter aircraft.
Experienced in operations, project mgmt, SCM and HR.

3. PMP qualified

GMAT : planning to give by this year end.

Could someone give me an honest opinion what score must I aim for in GMAT so as to stand a good chance for an admit?

Hi Sankaran

Thanks for posting. Your work with the Air Force is certainly very impressive, but you now have ~12 years of experience, which is on the higher edge for IIMB. Given the differentiation in your profile, you may succeed, but do keep other IIMs (A/C at least) on your radar too.

In terms of the GMAT, aim for 680+, and of course, 700+ if possible. Try and apply in R1 if you can.

Profile : Working in Sales and Marketing Profile for one of the MAHARATNA PSUs ( a FORTUNE 500 Company) as an Asst Manager.
Got into the Organization post giving GATE.
Worked in the Lubricants Department of the Organization since then in the field of Sales and Marketing.
Have worked in Eastern UP for 5 years looking after multiple channels in 9 Districts with a top line of 16 Crs and Bottom Line of 3 Crs.
Currently handling 2 Channels for the Western Gujarat Spanning over 10 Districts.

Why to Join MBA [Short Term Goal] - To Crystallize the abstract / incomplete knowledge obtained by working in Sales and Marketing Profile. Utilize this knowledge in work to give a multiplier in career growth.

Hi samarth2426,
Good profile and slightly diverse from the larger IIM applicant pool. Suggest you should target an industry shift now rather than wait for the long-term since it'll progressively get difficult to change. The principles of S&M won't change but the application will and you'd want to start to learn the tricks of the FMCG trade sooner than later.
Try to aim for a 680+ on the GMAT in case you are intending a re-take.

27 yr Male, Indian with Online GMAT: 740 (Q51 V38 IR7)

Educational Qualification:
-An engineer from Thapar University: CGPA- 8.15/10
-12th: 89.6%
-10th: 95% - School topper, Scholarship holder

Work Ex.:
ZS Associates (2 months - presently working):
- Associate consultant. Working in the Business Consulting group leveraging Decision Analytics in Sales & Marketing projects for the top 10 global pharmaceutical clients.
- Switched job to learn on the marketing side as well as to work in a consulting firm

EXL Analytics (4.5 years):
-Worked in the field of risk analytics, providing analytical solutions to a major US bank
-Fast track promotions. 3 promotions in 4 years. Grown from an Analyst to a team lead. Handled a team of 4
-Client appreciations and Award
-On-site travel for business meetings and knowledge session with the client

Hi Rakshit,

Your profile looks good and with strong analytics experience, you can build a strong profile and application to showcase to the admissions committee. However, will you have the required 5 years of experience by the time you apply (especially to IIM B/C)?

Focus on building a strong application, think more on your goals and develop essays/SOPs that help you stand out from the crowd. Remember, the class will mostly have people with 7-8 years of experience, and you have to convince the admissions team that you can be part of such as a classroom.

Following is your profile evaluation by our expert team of Ex-PSU folks who pursued MBA from top IIMs and made career switch -

Admission Chances
A GMAT score of 720 and work experience in a Fortune 500 PSU make you a strong candidate for the one year MBA programs at IIMs. Sales & marketing role in a PSU is a very unique profile as most of the PSU folks work in operations role. Also, you must have secured a stellar rank in GATE to get into a fortune 500 PSU. This will be a key differentiator in your profile. So, a good application combined with a 720 GMAT score should be sufficient for you to get interview calls from IIM A/B/C. However, getting an admit will also depend upon how you perform in interview and explain your short & long term career goals.

Career Prospects
The short term goal mentioned by you is quite generic and it needs to highlight more personal/ specific content and it must align with you long term goal. With a background in sales & marketing you may get into a job as brand manager/marketing manager in oil & gas/allied industry. While switching to FMCG can be a bit difficult after 7 years of work ex, it is not impossible.There are many examples of people with your kind of experience who has joined FMCG firms such as Cocacola as Sales Manager post their One year MBA from the IIMs. Domain consulting can also be very good option if you are interested in consulting.

Undergrad Information / Education: B Com + Chartered Accountant - Scored Avg 65% in CA finals (First Attempt)

GMAT: 640 (appeared in Sept 2016)

Work experience and leadership: 10.5 yrs,
1. Was Hired through ICAI Capus on Day 0 from Mid Management role at ICICI Bank Corporate banking, Mumbai. (amongst 4 candidates who were offered this profile from 75 others who were hired)
2. Switched to HSBC and was later promoted to Vice president - Corporate Banking managing asset book of INR 22 Bn. Clients such as Blue Star, Asian Paints Group, K Raheja Corp etc.
3. Switched to Investment banking team at Development bank of Singapore managing with clients such as Tata Group. Majority of my projects were covered in New for FY18.
4. Switched to Kotak Mahindra bank MNC corporate banking team Building MNC Banking Book for KMBL
5. Switched to Blend Finance ( Global Investment Banking Firm) as Track Africa head about a Year back. Highlights were project done with Nigerian Government to address the food security problem of the country through Agricultural Mechanization. We are in process of creating an entire Ecosystem to arrange USD500M of funding for investment in Agri equipments

2. I had cancelled by score 4 years back when i appeared for my GMAT. Hence, the official report not handy when I applied for IIM A , Round 1 yesterday. I have submitted the application along with my Enhanced Score Report and plan to submit my official Score report tomorrow via mail.(Reinstated the score while filling the application. However, it took 24 hours for GMAC to release the official Test Score.)

Eventhough, IIM A has allowed upto 11 Sept 2020 to submit GMAT scores reports online but I had selected "Yes, I have taken GMAT" while applying and now I am worried that my application may get rejected without consideration. Please advice.

Hi Manunirmal,

Profile looks good for Indian B-schools, however, GMAT score is on the lower side. With a strong application, you might still be able to crack it, though. With 10+ years of experience, you can target IIM A, B, C.

Hi Manunirmal,

Profile looks good for Indian B-schools, however, GMAT score is on the lower side. With a strong application, you might still be able to crack it, though. With 10+ years of experience, you can target IIM A, B, C.

Undergrad Information / Education: B Com + Chartered Accountant - Scored Avg 65% in CA finals (First Attempt)

GMAT: 640 (appeared in Sept 2016)

Work experience and leadership: 10.5 yrs,
1. Was Hired through ICAI Capus on Day 0 from Mid Management role at ICICI Bank Corporate banking, Mumbai. (amongst 4 candidates who were offered this profile from 75 others who were hired)
2. Switched to HSBC and was later promoted to Vice president - Corporate Banking managing asset book of INR 22 Bn. Clients such as Blue Star, Asian Paints Group, K Raheja Corp etc.
3. Switched to Investment banking team at Development bank of Singapore managing with clients such as Tata Group. Majority of my projects were covered in New for FY18.
4. Switched to Kotak Mahindra bank MNC corporate banking team Building MNC Banking Book for KMBL
5. Switched to Blend Finance ( Global Investment Banking Firm) as Track Africa head about a Year back. Highlights were project done with Nigerian Government to address the food security problem of the country through Agricultural Mechanization. We are in process of creating an entire Ecosystem to arrange USD500M of funding for investment in Agri equipments

extracurricular : Nothing major. Capitan of the School Hockey team. Played Hockey upto CBSE Zonal in 2003. Participated in a team trail walking event organised by OxFAM and cover 100 Km in 41 Hours with a team of 4 ppl. Certifications from CRISIL on Advance Credit Skills

Post MBA goals: Consultancy, Corporate Strategy Team (such as TAS), Private Equity, Track CEO/ CFO roles for large corporate

Anything else? : Chances in IIM-A 1 yr. executive MBA program.

Question -
1. Any other college that would suit the need ?
2. I had cancelled by score 4 years back when i appeared for my GMAT. Hence, the official report not handy when I applied for IIM A , Round 1 yesterday. I have submitted the application along with my Enhanced Score Report and plan to submit my official Score report tomorrow via mail.(Reinstated the score while filling the application. However, it took 24 hours for GMAC to release the official Test Score.)

Eventhough, IIM A has allowed upto 11 Sept 2020 to submit GMAT scores reports online but I had selected "Yes, I have taken GMAT" while applying and now I am worried that my application may get rejected without consideration. Please advice.

Hi Everyone,

Background: Indian IT Female

I have been working in the Information Technology (IT) sector in India for 9 years. During this period I worked with some of the Big 4's of the sector. Currently working as an Assistant Manager, and have been associated with an investment bank for the past 4+ years now (though in the Technology department).
I have some international experience (traveled twice work for short durations) and have a strong experience of interaction with clients from across the globe including the USA, Australia (Sydney), Manila, Russia, HongKong.

My 10th std was 83.4%
12th std was 79.2%
Engg was 74.3%
M.Tech was 84.3%
My GMAT score is 620 (I'm planning to retake the GMAT).

Extra-Curricular Activities: Have some experience with an NGO, own a book review blog, try to learn foreign languages as a hobby.

Please suggest if this profile is good enough for IIMA, IIMC, IIMB, and ISB?

- Dealt with Procurement of services and works, Utility shifting,Land Acquisition as per New R&R ACT-2013, Forest and Environmental Clearances, Laison with other Govt Departments/Field PIUs/PMC,Contract/Project Management

5. Infrastructure sector will witness huge growth in coming days for our country transition to First world economy and i feel mba will develop my expertise to prepare myself for future leadership roles

You have a good educational background and strong GMAT. With close to 7 yrs of Work-ex, you are well placed to target the leading one-year MBA programs in India - namely IIMA, IIMB, ISB, with more preference to the previous two because of your work ex.
You have a compelling value proposition in terms of translating your work-ex to post-MBA goals, but need to work on a bit to refine it and bring out the strong points. Your target sectors could not only be vanila infrastructure but also exciting startups redefining the infra space.

I am an engineering grad with 8.98 cgpa from NIT, female, working in banking sector(currently in a govt bank). I am aiming for IIM Ahmd PGPX for 2021-2022 batch, (the round 2 applications deadline is 19th october), but not yet done well with my preps. So I might need to apply in 3rd round ( by Dec last). Im apprehensive and tensed about the chances. any suggestions please.
