Hi Ankur,

Although a 700 score would have been better, we have worked with many candidates who got into these top IIMs with 670+ scores (some even with 640+ scores).

A lot would depend on how your present your profile and your life story. Hence, it is important to evaluate if you would want to spend more time on GMAT prep or on the application and the essays for these colleges.

Regards,
Tridisha

Hi
Kindly help me with the profile evaluation:

I am a male engineer (33 years as on date)
10th - 91%
12th - 92%
BTech - Mechanical Engg from YMCA Institute of Engineering, Faridabad - CGPA - 8.564
Work Ex- 11 years , all 2 India's biggest automobile OEMs-3 years in Manufacturing and 8 years in After sales.

I took GMAT on 26th July 22 and scored 690 (Q50 V32).

What are my chances if I apply for executive MBA at IIM A/B/C ?
What other good options do I have at this score for US colleges ?

Can someone evaluate my profile for IIM A PGPX 2023-2024 ?

1. GMAT - 740 (Q50, V38, IR 6)

2. Undergrad GPA - 3.65/4, MS GPA - 3.66/4 - Both from a top 5 engineering college in the US in Computer Engineering

3. First Authored a publication nominated for best paper at an international conference as part of my MS thesis.

4. Extra Curriculars : National Level Quizzer in high school, but nothing since college.

5. Work Experience - 10 months in a startup in the US as a Software Engineer.
- Partner in my family business for close to 3 years now. I help to manage the family business and in essence act as a director(although got my DIN just 2 months ago)

6. CBSE Class X - 10/10 GPA, CBSE Class XII - 95%. AIEEE AIR - 3910 (I don't know if stuff before college counts for admission).

I got 760 on the GMAT online but just got 740 in the test center version, which IIM A cares about. Now I am feeling uncomfortable regarding my chances.
Should I retake GMAT and apply for Round 2 ?

1. Target colleges: IIM A/B/C, ISB
2. Gmat: 730. Q50 V38 IR7 Awa 5
3. 10th: 89% 12th: 73% Graduation: 7.8 / 10. B S Nautical technology
4. Profession: 5 year 9 months experience as a navigating officer in merchant navy. Last rank 2nd officer.
5. Reason for MBA: horizontal transition to a shore based supply chain management job. I have gained experience in critical high value operations, providing me skills such as crisis management, risk management, leadership etc. However, I need mba from India's top mba schools to fill up gaps such as lack of academic background to get into a leadership role in a shore based ecommerce company.

6. Extracurriculars: Ngo work during covid. Musician- performing since 2012. Trekking and biking as part time hobbies.

Hello Krishnaps54

Past scores are decent, and GMAT is the least of your worries, so don't stress around that.
Extracurriculars look dated (unless you can make them seem relevant and connect to any activities that you might be doing recently)
Anyway, diversity in your case can come from more than just extracurricular activities- mainly from the family business background.
This can play either way- if not presented well in the essays/interviews later, family business can even be a weakness, but if presented well (and are genuine achievements to talk about) then it could be a stand out strength. Further feedback on work ex is tough as no other details have been shared (not even the nature of work, industry, accomplishments etc).
What you should be most concerned about (instead of the GMAT) is your post MBA career goals- what is that you want to do in the short/long term, why MBA and that too after a family business background- are you planning to leave- if yes, why and transition into what? If no, then why MBA at all? Many gaps to fill here.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello dushyantbisht

One liner feedback- With that GMAT and Merchant Navy background, very high chances of getting an interview invite.

DM me if you want to get in touch with other past candidates with merchant navy background.

5. Reason for MBA: I have handled operations and general management in my job and currently managing more than 100 people at various levels. Now, I want to grow more but the growth in my current job is very slow. I want to do MBA in order to learn more about management and fill gaps in my understanding of management. I am open for Industry change but main focus is on role change to a leadership one in order to make impact and test my limits.

6. Extra-curricular: Conducted various events at college level.

Pistol shooter (2015-2019) but don't have many certificates for the same.

I have given multiple PA insurance policy to poor people in order to help (However, I can not prove it through documents).

Should I take GMAT again (If yes, please suggest a minimum GMAT score) or give these colleges application a try?

Thank you.

Hello Krishnaps54,

Thanks for writing in.

The GMAT should be the least of your concerns irrespective of the fact that you have a lower test center score. A 740 is a competitive score and you do not need to retake the test.

The extra-curricular section is weak, especially because you have only mentioned 1 point from your school days. Please try and think of any other points you feel you might have possibly missed.

There is no information pertaining to your career goals here. How you build your narrative around your work experience and your plans for the future is going to be crucial in determining your chances of bagging an admit.

All the best!

Hi dushyantbisht,

Thanks for writing in.

Your experience in the navy helps differentiate your case and the GMAT score nicely complements the same. The reason for MBA is also very logical; so, you do a very good shot at bagging an interview call but a lot frankly depends on how well you are able to bring everything together through your essays. The career goals will need to be articulated in a more organized way, with you talking about your short-term plans as well as your long-term ambitions.

Should you feel the need for a detailed discussion pertaining to your profile, please feel free to drop us a message.

All the best!

Hello sd100rabh,

Thanks for writing in.

While your overall profile looks both stable and rich, you should definitely look at improving your GMAT score as it is underwhelming. While there is no minimum score that can guarantee an admit, a score in excess of 710, will give you a good chance. Of course, a lot will also depend on how well you put together the other aspects of your application including your essays and recommendations.

We would suggest that you focus on the GMAT first and then move on to the other aspects of your application.

All the best!

Hi sd100rabh,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

Your profile has rich and diverse experience, which is highly valued. The extra curricular are also decent enough. Academics score really doesn't matter after so much work experience.

Your GMAT score is not at par for IIMA/B/C. Maybe at C, you may stand a more realistic chance with this score.

Ideally a GMAT onward of 690+ will be good. You may qualify in 660 GMAT also, as many PSU candidates have converted last year with 640-680 GMAT scores but that will require extra ordinary efforts from your side in application and interview.

Other than these, please look into the articulation of your reasons for doing an MBA. Its same for 99% of the applicants, which you may find in GMAT club as well with a simple research. But this may be looked into at a later stage. First you may like to finalize your decision on GMAT.

Hope it helped.

Hi Devasena123,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

You have a wonderful profile. Its diverse, its rich. Academics are good and you have been a college topper.

PSB experience does add a lot of weight to your profile. Extra curricular is okayish.

The concern here is GMAT score. 680 is below average score to qualify in IIMA/B. Its not impossible to qualify, but not easy to convert either. You will have to work really hard in your applications and interview to counter your GMAT score. There are many candidates who qualify with this score every year and so can you! Just concentrate on next steps in hand with sincerity and dedication.

Hope it helped.

Hello Devasena123

Profile is a mixed bag. Past scores are decent, but GMAT does not inspire much confidence. Extracurricular look dated (and hence weak), but the PSB work ex will help add diversity (though more details will be helpful- career progression and achievements for instance).
Career goals are missing to give complete insights.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello sd100rabh - Short answer, retake the GMAT with a target of 710+ for the schools on your list.

Long answer- This score is low for almost any background, though you have some other strengths in your profile- public work ex helps add diversity and shows potential for good story telling.
Career goals look weak as they are vague. 'Leadership position' is not a goal. Try becoming more specific about the role and companies you wish to target.
Extracurricular look dates (at least the university ones), how old are the other ones, have you been practicing them consistently?

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Nagendar21

Kudos to the detailed note, makes my job easier and provide an informed feedback.
Honestly, GMAT is the only evident weakness, and a 690 will put you in a decent place. No guarantees, but such a score will not be a deal breaker in your specific case.
Work ex is your stand out strength and you must ride on this. International ex further helps add some brownie points. Good potential of story telling looking at your career achievements.
Some of the Extracurricular/Hobbies are interesting and relevant. Keep in mind that university ones are old and might not add much weight. For some of the sports ones, it will be important how you show them as relevant to the B-School application (hint- how will these add value to the experience of your batchmates inside and outside the classroom). Around reading, especially Economics, a great and relevant hobby to have. On a lighter note, be prepared to get grilled by the IIM professors in the interview if this comes up.
Career goals are clear and realistic, definitely achievable after IIM MBA and this will work in your favor.
One positive I will highlight is your attitude going by the details in your post- you have a fair idea what is important for admissions and you are approaching this correctly.

All the Best
