Hi Chetan,

A GMAT of 600 is generally considered as very low. You will need some really strong selling points in your resume to even have a chance at a good b-school with this score. Are you asking specifically about ISB or in general for any business school?

Hi Vaibhav,

The decision to retake GMAT is a good idea. 660 on GMAT is quite low, although people do get in with this score. I'd like to know more about your work related experiences, achievements and career goals to really understand your profile. These are always the key elements in your application.

Dear MBA Decoder,

Thanks for prompt reply.

Below are the key points regarding my work ex

Initial 3 yrs as service engineer in US valve manufacture "Tyco Flow control" where I used to handle on-site activities like maintenance , irrigation, installation etc.

2nd company was exide industries Ltd (Battery manufacturer) as a Sr. Service officer and was heading service operation of Gujarat state with team of 9 . Worked there for 1 and half year

Current company is coffeeday Global Ltd ( CCD, vending machine manufacturing division ) and heading technical service operation of corporate clients for both Gujarat and MP states with team strength of 45+ ppl (more than 1500 clients ).
Joined CCD in June 2014 as an asst Manager Service and got promoted as manager service in March-16 (in just 20 months' tenure)
Have vast experience of team handling and after sales service .
Have taken the service levels of Gujarat and MP to top 5 states across India in CCD

About career goals :
Would like to go ahead with operations and learn the business management skills with the help of MBA

Specifically would like to be into the lead position of revenue generation based operations immediately after MBA

Hope this will help.

Do revert if you need any additional info

Dear Team Strategy4GMAT/Namita/MBA Decoder,

Hey! Was hoping for feedback regarding my profile as I’m planning to apply to ISB R2 2017.

Work ex: 1 year local small-scale startup, 2.5 years EY Internal audit

GMAT score:730 (2nd attempt), Acads: Bachelor of Business Studies-68.5%, class XII commerce-85%

Extra curriculars:
Volunteering for a month each with Teach for India and a social enterprise that focuses on organic food through environmental conservation,
Planned and conceptualized two pan-university events in college,
Writer for a student-run online magazine
Member of School Ed Board

Hobbies: love reading/ writing/ calligraphy.

The good: female, degree of diversity in profile I guess

The worry points: Average acads, no awards since 10th class (should I even include the 10th class certificates given they were only merit certificates for academic performance?)

Would be SO grateful if you could analyse my profile. Thanks in advance

Hi rupali, was it startup first and then EY, or the other way round?

You've also not mentioned your under-grad college.

Neither have you mentioned your career goals/motivation for MBA.

All these things would matter when you articulate your essays and could play a role in how your application is considered by ISB.

Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
ISBeacon - Im from CBS. I worked in EY first, then wished to work in development consulting cos I had the opportunity to work on such 2 such projects with a different team and felt like thats the field I want to make a career in. I want to work at the intersection of social initiatives and business, get into international development consulting immediately post MBA.Since I have no experience on that front and hence no suitable opportunity, I left EY to prepare and take CAT to boost my career prospects. However, since I got only 92%ile in CAT, I decided to join a start-up and continue working and take the GMAT alongside.
Needed advice as to- What should I be prepared to tell the Adcom? Does the above reflect negatively in some manner? Also, my role in the startup Im working with is pretty administrative, and the startup hasnt done too well. Id joined as I believed in the cause (providing a variety of affordable consulting services through experts online). How can I present this information in a better way and avoid giving Adcom the impression Im applying to ISB for lack of a better alternative. Sorry for the long message, and hope to get your inputs about the same. Thanks!

strategy4gmat1 - Thanks for your response. In addition, please let me know: I worked in a small scale startup post my stint with EY. What are all the questions I can expect to have thrown at me by Adcom regarding the startup I worked with and startups in general?

Dude, Your credentials are well above average ISB applicants. I think ISB should be a cakewalk provided you know your stuff and are clear on your goals. The only worry you might face is on how to differentiate yourself from the hundred's of engg/telecom sector applicants. And don't rely on just your GMAT for that :P.

Personally, I think you should really emphasize on your international exposure (esp Africa), that could be your differentiating factor. And also how you tie up your extra curricular to give your profile more flavor.

Best of Luck!

I think ISB would be very interested in you. You are typically what they look for when they write "career and experience diversity" in their websites and brochures. I think you can make some stellar essays with the career you've had and the situations you've handled. Your GMAT score is decent as well as per ISB's avg. However, you might need to be careful of why an MBA. What goals can an MBA fulfill or bridge in your life. If you're able to explain that then I think you should be able to get in easily.

Best of luck!

Hi Harsha,

Thanks for sharing your profile.

I am an ISB alum, CO14 and have been working as a freelance admission consultant for the last couple of years. Preliminary look at your profile, showcases a lot of rich experience, which you can effectively portray in your applications. However, you will need to be very specific about choosing a few traits in your profile and building stories around them - avoid the 'jack of all trades trap'.

Secondly, you will need to be very clear as to what your goals are and why do you need an MBA at this stage of your career and how a particular B school will help you achieve that. As a rule of thumb, you can refer to the X=Y=Z formula where X - what you currently have ; Z - where do you want to get to and Y - the bridge that MBA will hopefully fill.

As far as the choice of schools are concerned, with your GMAT and experience (volume and diversity), I will recommend you to explore B schools in US and Europe as well apart from India. While, you have a very strong chance at getting into ISB, schools like INSEAD (because of your international experience) is also within your reach.

Please feel free to reach out to me at +91-9701215544/ Skype : arijit_biswas89 in case you want to have a more detailed conversation.

Cheers and Wish you all the very Best !!

Hi Harsha,

Your overall candidature is decent. 710 on GMAT is fine. BITS pilani is a good brand. Shipping background will help as it puts you in diverse category but at the same time you will have to justify your post MBA goals and why ISB is the best place.

Consider operations and supply chain as post MBA role as these need skills such as people & crisis management and processes knowledge and adherence.

Apart from ISB, you can consider Purdue( deadline 15 Jan). You could have considered other options such as Kelley and Ohio but you don’t have a lot of time and 2 schools is enough work for 13 days.

Hi,
We would recommend reconsidering decision to pursue MBA. Your entire career has been academia and research focus. So, the biggest challenge you will face is switching to a corporate role post MBA. Secondly, most of your education and work ex has been outside India. While that adds to the diversity, you will have to link it with post MBA goals. Finally, your GMAT score is average.

We have successfully handled cases of applicants coming from tech research background but they were in India, deeply connected to technologies such as RFID and GPS and their business applications and had higher GMAT scores e.g. 730+.

Feel free to reject our comments but we would recommend taking another opinion before you apply. Maybe you can apply next year and think through your goals well. It will also give you time to take another shot at GMAT.

Feel free to contact us for any queries.
