Re: ISB Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hello Everyone

Can some one please help me evaluate my profile.

This is Vibhav Dwivedi from New Delhi, age 26.
I am Engineer by degree in computer science and engineering.

Education:
10th - CBSE
12th - CBSE
Engineering - Computer Science and Engineering. Apeejay College, Rohtak university.

Percentages:
10th - 76.8%
12th - 62%
Graduation - 67.3%

Job Profile
i worked as Calc Automation Specialist at AON Hewitt.
The job included the calculation of retirement benefit for the employees , I have handled three client at same time, with two being primary and one being secondary. total experience is off 3 years and 3 months.

After AON I started my own startup and was a co founder of online start up that deals with deals and discounts and other tie ups with restaurants.
i was taking care of the business development, taking care of all the expenditure done, cash inflows, preparing the prototype model, contacting the restaurants through emails and phone calls, documenting the work etc, in nut shell all the back end operation work along with business development and finance work.

Extra
Social work: I was a team member with one of the profit organisation/trade union that work for the benefit of daily wage workers. my work included documenting all the details and creating record in excel (data entry) . because of my good work i was promoted to the post of secretary, and i have some field experience for that, where i have visited couple of construction site to talk, explain and convince them about the benefits they will get after becoming the member wit our trade union. Also this trade union is affiliated by the state and central government

Currently i am also working as a free lancer for the brand marketing of various restaurants, i have a good database of food bloggers in Delhi and work along with the PR of the restaurants for their promotions, majorly social media marketing.
this again involves th marketing and managing work of around 12-15 people at a same time.

Others
1. when at office i was main host/co-host of 3 floor events which included over 300 employees of the same floor.
. have basic idea of LSIP (large scale interactive program) that was done by Aon to get to know about the engagement of employees. Also, i was a part of the logistic team, when an event was conducted 40 KM away from the office building so i took care of that, along with my team.
2. i have my own food blog on wordpress and a good running instagram account with 3500+ followers all organic and gained in last 4-5 months.

GMAT score
i will be writing my exam either on 26th December and aim to score above 650. Though i am targeting 700++ but i am finding it a bit tough to go to that level. so while evaluating plz consider it to be in between 630-660.

Thanks. looking forward for response, from the qualified and experience ppl over here.

Thanks for your response.

Since most of my experience has been in Marketing analytics and I have worked extensively with Strategy/Product teams , I believe a move to a Strategy/Product manager roles in Banks , Retail or e-commerce companies post my mba will be a good career advancement for me.
And a lot of companies hire from ISB for such roles.

I have a few questions though.

1. How much of a deterrent will be my Undergrad gpa? And should I try to Improve my Gmat further to compensate for that? Will a CFA L2 next June'17 help if I think about applying next year?

2. Do you believe working for so many organizations in my 7+ years of WE will be a negative? And how do you think I can compensate for that.

3. I don't have any ECs with leadership experience.. though I have been doing project management for Some time.. will it be a red flag on my application?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks

Deepds,

If you submit a competitive application, you have nothing to fear, atleast for ISB.

Explain the reason for your low GPA. Your profile has more depth to it because of the adversities you overcame and still managed to pull up your grades through the CFA, the acturial science course and the GMAT score. Take the CFA if it helps you now or later in your career- not to supplement your education.

Adcoms like to see leadership experience, at the work place and outside. EXtracurricular activities give you a chance to showcase leadership outside work. Its great to have it, but in case you do not, still go ahead and apply. ISB does not place so much importance on extra curricular activities as the American b-schools do.

Changing three companies is not such a huge number in 7 years. DOn't worry about it, but if you think its a concern, you can address it in the optional ISB essay.

Hope that helps.

Rohan,

On assumption that you will submit a good application, everything looks good to me. DO explain in the application, what led to the transition to the non profit, and how have both your experiences together informed your career goals.

Hi Rohan,
You have a good GMAT score for ISB. How much leadership experience do you have on the work front? If you can show good leadership and team management experience in your application along with a clear reason on why MBA, why marketing and strategy post MBA and how it ties up to your past experience, you have a fair shot at getting admitted.

Though I'm not an expert but retaking GMAT would help.
Since this was your first attempt I see no reason why you can't improve another 20-30 points.
High GMAT will also balance your relatively weak acads.
Hope it helps...Feel free to let me know if I could be of any help..

Also, apart from my GMAT, how does my overall profile come out to be? Do I have a chance at ISB?

Hi Chitrangda,
I think your profile is descent, biggest positive is you're a female. I'm not sure if your work is IT, but the IT competition pool is really competitive.
Your work accolades look good but again what'll matter more is the repute of the company you work for...Another thing that strikes me is that you're already in a "leadership program", so think hard for the "Why MBA" and "Goals" question...
Again, a lot depends on how you present yourself...My interview was all about my hobby and it seemed they had already made up there mind.
A good application should surely get you in...

PS: As I said before, I'm not an expert. I'm just an applicant and an ISB admit this year.

Cheers,
Rohit

Hi Vaibhav,

The decision to retake GMAT is a good idea. 660 on GMAT is quite low, although people do get in with this score. I'd like to know more about your work related experiences, achievements and career goals to really understand your profile. These are always the key elements in your application.

Hi Chitrangada,

You have some great stuff going for you! You have a few things that will help you differentiate yourself - these will make good essay material. Ofcourse, you will have to present that info properly and show it as a consistent personality trait and not one-off recognitions.

You are good with your current GMAT score. If you can retake with minimal effort, then go ahead, otherwise use this crucial time to build your application instead. At 690, you are not in bad shape at all.

Also, there is little time left for 'profile enhancement'. I think you have some great points to talk about in any case. So, just present the best picture of what you already have.

Hope that helps

Hi Vaibhav,

The decision to retake GMAT is a good idea. 660 on GMAT is quite low, although people do get in with this score. I'd like to know more about your work related experiences, achievements and career goals to really understand your profile. These are always the key elements in your application.

Dear MBA Decoder,

Thanks for prompt reply.

Below are the key points regarding my work ex

Initial 3 yrs as service engineer in US valve manufacture "Tyco Flow control" where I used to handle on-site activities like maintenance , irrigation, installation etc.

2nd company was exide industries Ltd (Battery manufacturer) as a Sr. Service officer and was heading service operation of Gujarat state with team of 9 . Worked there for 1 and half year

Current company is coffeeday Global Ltd ( CCD, vending machine manufacturing division ) and heading technical service operation of corporate clients for both Gujarat and MP states with team strength of 45+ ppl (more than 1500 clients ).
Joined CCD in June 2014 as an asst Manager Service and got promoted as manager service in March-16 (in just 20 months' tenure)
Have vast experience of team handling and after sales service .
Have taken the service levels of Gujarat and MP to top 5 states across India in CCD

About career goals :
Would like to go ahead with operations and learn the business management skills with the help of MBA

Specifically would like to be into the lead position of revenue generation based operation immediately after MBA & 5 years down the line would like to start own operation consulting , kind of small start up.

Hope this will help.

Do revert if you need any additional info
