Hi shuchismit,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is a little lower, but you can compensate for it with a good GMAT score. The average GMAT score for ISB is 710, and I suggest you aim for 710+ to maximize your chances.

On the work front, your work experience sounds good. You can speak about the omnichannel campaign and the impact it has created. Your ECs are impressive. You must talk about your work as VP at the club and exhibit the instance where you were in the leadership role, this will put forth leadership attribute in your apps. I would like to know more about some major aspects of your work experience and your contribution to the community, as b-schools are keen to understand how the candidate can contribute to its community. I would like to know more about your profile.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

What are your post-MBA goals? When are you planning to take the GMAT, and which intake are you eyeing?

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for the b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Have you got waitlisted? Here are some tips for MBA waitlisted candidates that may help you get some direction.

Being on the waitlist for your dream business school is a mixed bag of emotions. While it's tough not to have a definitive yes, you're still in the game and can take some comfort in the fact that you've passed a critical hurdle with the adcoms.

Schools can also use the waitlist to decide how committed an individual is to get into the school. The reaction of a candidate to the waitlist decision has signal significance. Any candidates on the waitlist consider offers to attend other colleges, in which case they will drop out. Others are convinced that the school that has waitlisted them is their only choice and will have to wait to see if they are accepted.

However, here are few strategic waitlist tips to help you make your next move:

1) Determine what your target school needs from applicants because each school is different. Some schools are only concerned with whether you wish to be placed on the waitlist or released. If this is the case, don't try to provide more information or pester the admissions committee with questions about their reasoning, you'll just be punishing yourself.

2) Some schools need waitlisted applicants to submit an additional 250-300 word essay, it is important to provide an update. It's a smart idea to go back through your essays to see if you haven't mentioned much about your background or interests yet. Taking the opportunity to write about important recent experiences, promising changes in your nomination, and aspects you've improved your perception of the curriculum is a pleasant indication of your engagement in the school and a strong technique for telegraphing your commitment to attend. It is, of course, in the best interests to ensure that the adcoms have the latest up-to-date records so that they can make an informed decision.the next time your file is reviewed.

3) If you've been promoted or taken on more responsibilities at work, raised your GMAT score, strengthened your volunteer engagement, or had a fresh, meaningful travel experience, be sure to share it and explain why these changes make you a great prospect, and therefore student, who will enrich their curriculum.

4) If you interact with students or alumni of the program during the admissions process, it might be worth contacting them again and updating them on your status. They could be able to have an extra letter of approval for your candidacy at this point of the process if you made a good impact during the admissions process.

5) While it is critical to remain consistent and enthusiastic when waitlisted and communicate with staff at your target program, it is prudent to have a backup plan. If you are waitlisted, there is still time to put together a solid application for another school with the coming round deadlines for some top programs just over a month out. Even if you've been waitlisted at your dream school and want to reapply if accepted, it's never too early to start dreaming about the next year and what steps you could take to improve your candidacy.

To everybody out there hesitating in applying to their dream business schools because of their gaps, we would like to say, everyone has one or the other gaps in their profile! What matters is your clarity of going into a business school and how you present this clarity of purpose to adcoms. Yes, your story and its logic do play a very important role in compensating for any of your gaps. So, do not sell short, go and apply to your dream schools! We are with you! If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on this forum.

Also, for all the waitlisted/rejected applicants, we want to assure you that all is not lost!

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Hi hemanthreddynaini,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good on the surface. Starting with the stats, your undergrad GPA is on the lower side. The average GMAT score for ISB stands at 710; thus your GMAT score can compensate for a low GPA. Your essays, work profile, and how smartly you weave the narrative will play a much greater role.

On the work front, your work experience is something that sets you apart. Your own startup experience, I assume you must be having knowledge of how a business actually grows from ground zero. I think you should capitalize on it. So, your career does exhibit elements of leadership, achievements, initiatives, impact, and international experience. Coming to your ECs, I feel they are good. You may also talk about any of the other interests you're involved in and may have some achievements.

What are your post-MBA goals? This will help me know how we can capitalize on your skills and make MBA reasonable by connecting your expertise and MBA knowledge in order to achieve your long-term goals. A piece of advice for you, make your post-MBA goals more specific like what role do you want to take and what are your long-term aspirations.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall, you have a good profile. The only thing you have to be careful about is your story. It should be authentic, reasonable, and demonstrating the core values of the business schools you're applying to. Also, try to be more specific on your reasons for pursuing MBA. You may talk about your ongoing project and how the school can help in that project and also, in overall life.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to ISB. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hey ashimakumari

To begin with, your academic background showcases a series of good scores starting right from your schooling years and thus, boasts of your academic prowess. The slight drop in your grades during your undergrad should not pose as a hindrance in your application as the AdComs base the majority judgement on the work experience of MBA applicants.

As far as the work experience goes, ISB PGP requires a minimum work experience of 2 years. Thus, your 2.5 work experience at HSBC would easily allow you to target ISB. Additionally, your internships at DRDO and DMRC Delhi showcase an extensive amount of professional, pragmatic exposure. Although you have a big brand on your CV that works in your favour, you would need to connect the dots and showcase your journey to gain the upper hand with equally competent profiles with extensive work experience hailing from the big four brands. You ought to explain and highlight the major projects of your work and how these experiences helped develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. To further strengthen and differentiate your profile, highlight why you chose these firms, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took and any kind of impact created to portray the knowledge gained from these experiences.

Furthermore, your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important as it showcases a holistically developed profile which is what schools are looking out for. Needless to say, you definitely possess a decent hold on your extracurricular activities as you have been a part of online volunteering programs and organised national fests, which go on to highlight your leadership and team-building skills. Furthermore, this can be taken up a notch by elaborating on the kind of events you organised, the duties you performed, and most importantly, highlight your major takeaways. You have also mentioned that you have won various sports and debating competitions, which showcases your proactive nature and zeal to upskill yourself. However, you can add more value to your profile by digging deeper into the various endeavours you undertook and how you went above and beyond to excel in the same. All in all, these skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

Moving forward, a GMAT score of a minimum of 720 is what would be required for ISB. That said, as ISB ranks under the dream category, your chances of acceptance stand at around 50%.

Having said that, to increase your chances of getting admitted to this school, you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application consisting of well-drafted Essays, LORs, and a resume to back your profile. As a matter of fact, your application aids in setting you apart from the other applicants and has a 30% impact on your acceptance chances. You thus need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers, and how you will be a great value addition to the school.

Alongside, I’d also recommend you hedge your bets wisely and target a good mix of 6 to 8 schools. Thus, if you want to know more about other top B-schools that you can be targeting, you can take up a FREE Profile Evaluation that will give you more accurate and personalized suggestions based on your inputs.

Hello hemanthreddynaini, and thank you for sharing.

Your startup sounds interesting (and quite successful!). When Personal MBA Coach works with folks from startups, there is a specific strategy we have.

Since you don't come from as well-known of a brand name and the admissions committee members may not be extremely familiar with your particular experience, it is important to highlight certain elements of your job and be sure to execute your story to perfection. We would be happy to provide guidance here to make sure your application presents your experience in the best light. Take a look at our services to learn more.

If you are looking for help putting together a strong application for ISB and any of the other programs you are targeting, feel free to send a note to [email protected]. At Personal MBA Coach, we recommend applying to 5-8 schools since business schools look to fill their classes with diverse candidates and you cannot always predict which school might need someone who fits your profile!

Regards,

Hi ass10,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is good. Although the average GMAT score for ISB is 710, I suggest you aim for 710+ to maximize your chances. Speaking about the research paper which got recognition would build an impactful story. On the work front, how many years of experience you have? Also, I would like to know more about the roles you undertook in your work to evaluate more comprehensively.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Your ECs are amazing. Specially, you registered your college’s name for the Limca book of records. Great! Speaking about it will bring some interesting conversation between you and adcoms. You can do any additional coursework which will help you reflect your ability to survive the quantitative rigor of business school and add value to its community. Quality matters more than quantity. How are you unique? What would you bring new to the ISB community? Focus on getting a robust, unique story. What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect all the dots and build a great narrative. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and your further chances to ISB.

Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Vinay Rana,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Based on whatever information you have shared, the following points stand out positively in your profile.

1. Your number of years of work experience perfectly matches the average work experience of the 1-year cohort for the ISB PGP program.

2. Your undergrad in management studies will add a lot of value to your profile during the application process.

3. Your entrepreneurial experience is unique, making your application stand out from the rest of the applicants'.

4. Your class X and XII scores are above average.

But your undergrad score is on the lower side for ISB applications. Also, details regarding your key achivements/role/responsibilities in your 4.5 years of work experience will be crucial for your application process.

Hence, if you could share your detailed profile with us, we can share better insights into your overall profile.

Please feel free to connect with us for a detailed evaluation.

Kindly evaluate my profile for ISB PGP-

Academics -
10th - 8.8 CGPA
12th - 91.4%
Undergraduate- 75.3% ( Bachelor of Commerce: Hons from Delhi University)
Graduate- 75.3% (IMT Ghaziabad)
Work Ex: 3+ years working in EY-Parthenon (backend). Working as a Senior Analyst in Strategy Consulting. Joined in April 2018.

Point to note, I completed my MBA from IMT Ghaziabad in 2018. I want to try for a second MBA from a tier 1 college. Working in the industry for more than 3 years made me realise that I am constrained in terms of job profile/role, company and a little bit of CTC. To scale higher, I feel a tier 1 MBA will go a long way in helping me. Also, will give my CFA L2 this year.

Extracurriculars -

1. Won multiple awards in EY for my performance and client service
2. Completed EY badges in Data Visualisation and Government & Public Sector
3. Won a few case study competitions during my time at IMT

Please let me know my about my profile and what average GMAT score do I need? I know the next question may be difficult to answer, but how is a second MBA looked at in ISB?

Hi VinayRana,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Here are my thoughts based on the details you've shared. First, starting with stats, your undergrad GPA is on the lower side and the average GMAT for ISB stands at 710. So, I suggest you try to push your score to 710+ to be on the safer side.

On the work front, 4.5 years of experience seems good. But, what have you done differently? To evaluate this, I need to know more about your experience (Roles and responsibilities you have undertaken). It’s great you have won several awards for excellence, which obviously exhibit you as a high-performing individual, but what more than that? I’m curious to know about the restaurant you ran, what was your vision behind it? It will create some interesting conversations between you and adcoms. What are your post-MBA goals?

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Overall your profile seems good on the surface. I would like to know more about your profile (like impact, career progression, etc) to give you my realistic assessment. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to ISB. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!

Hello VinayRana,

Personal MBA Coach regularly helps applicants gain admission to ISB and these candidates had an average GMAT of 700. That said, it will be key to work toward the 700 range, particularly due to your lower undergrad GPA.

I am curious to know more about your current professional role and extracurriculars. While it is completely understandable to have faced some work challenges due to Covid, did the shutdown of your restaurant lead to a gap in work experience? If so, you will want to explain this in an optional essay.

If you are looking for guidance in putting together strong MBA applications, send a note to [email protected] to discuss how we can help set you up for success.

Regards,
Personal MBA Coach
