Hi Sandip,

GMAT: Target for 710 or more for a competitive application.
Career goals: You can work at a deeper level towards your career goals of moving to the finance / investment banking industry from a background in sales. You have mentioned that you have taken up short term courses in the field, this would help you. Try a career mapping exercise to see if you can further strengthen your plans to pivot the career shift.
Extracurriculars: It seems that your career pursuits didn't give you ample time to pursue any extracurriculars recently. You can pick up some new passion projects or revive any of the older ones for the coming few months.

All the best!

Hello sandip2295

The sales work ex shows some storytelling potential and will have good business impact as well, I'd assume. This is going to be what you build your application around.
Extracurricular activities are dated and may not add much value, unless your achievements here are stellar.
A GMAT of 710+ is recommended to stand out and have strong chances.
Career goals is something I'm not too sure about- you'll have to touch upon how these tie with your past experience, interests and what have you done pre MBA to ensure such a transition will have high probability of success.

Hi,
You have a great GMAT score, it will definitely add value to your application. Try to build a strong case for your post MBA goals. Is there a career break somewhere? I can see that you graduated in 2015 but you have mentioned a total work experience of 56 months. Also, try to catch up on your extracurriculars, it always gives your application a different perspective to look from.

All the best!

Hello Kaashvii01

The public sector ex could potentially help stand out, but more details are needed here in terms of career progression, achievements and more importantly what are your career goals and what specific roles and companies are you targeting.
Lack of extracurriculars will hurt and you'll have to really bring out the past experience and future goals very strongly in order to compensate.
GMAT is stellar to say the least.
It will now boil down to how you present your case.

Hi sandip2295 hope you are doing well, hope you are doing well.

Finance/IB goals are somewhat improbable (but not impossible) given you did not take any suitable actions in the last 6 years to move closer to this industry (if you feel so passionate about it!). However, there are certain finance roles in startups these days that are more welcoming to folks from non-finance backgrounds such as you. If you do your research thoroughly you may be able to make a strong plan for yourself. Feel free to reach out if you want to know more about this. But as far as your B School application is concerned, I suggest you stay rational in your essays for post-MBA job expectations. ISB is known for rejecting applicants who have a weak understanding of their post-MBA prospectives.

For some self-reflection do refer to this brief write-up which would help you to think about your MBA profile more holistically

https://gmatclub.com/forum/note-keeping ... l#p2976345

For now, it would be difficult to guide you on prospects without understanding the differentiating factors of your profile. What you mentioned is too generic and common among ISB/IIM applicants. Your ECs also seem dated and it does not appear that you continue to stay associated with any outside work initiative. What would help us to guide you better is knowing what feats you have accomplished in your career span of 5+ years and how you demonstrated progression and incremental responsibilities year on year.

Feel free to get in touch if you would like to have a detailed profile evaluation.

Best wishes

Hello sandip2295,

Thanks for writing in.

Considering your extra-curricular activities are not stellar and you haven't shared any specific details pertaining to your awards and promotions at work, we would definitely suggest that you aim for at least a 720 on the GMAT - the higher the GMAT. This, coupled with a set of essays that build a compelling narrative pertaining to your profile and goals would both be important in giving you a competitive shot at making it to ISB.

Good luck!

Hi Kaashvii01,

You have a fantastic GMAT score and the spike is definitely going to help strengthen your chances. We will, however, need more details pertaining to your progression at work, achievements, and future goals in order to help evaluate your profile in greater detail.

Thank you.

Hello Kaashvii01
Hope you can throw some light on how have you progressed in your career in the last ~5 years. What are some of the major wins you accomplished in terms of leadership exposure, stakeholder management skills, business knowledge etc.? Knowing what you wish to achieve from an MBA at this point would help us in guiding you on the prospects.

Given you have a public sector banking background, I am sharing some ideas to get you thinking about your story. Note my ideas are just examples for how you could present an interesting profile even as a public sector professional. To put forth a strong narrative you could talk about your motivation to work in public sector. You may have interesting insights from working on the execution of projects that concern specific TGs such as bottom of the pyramid of Indian economy. Demonstrate compassionate leadership through stories and iron will to mobilize such sectors post MBA leveraging your prior experience in public sector banking and your increased business acumen after MBA. Be conscientious about your goals and show that you have networked with folks from your target industry (and ISB alums) and researched your goals well. Goals that align with your current experience would seem convincing. This calls for more discussion and research but I think you can leverage your experience to get into a wide array of roles in public sector advisory, consulting, startups etc.

Feel free to reach out for professional guidance. Congratulations on the stellar GMAT score.

Warm regards

Hi Kaashvii01,

Congrats on a great GMAT score. Many PSU bank candidates have got selected with even low GMAT score in the last two years.

Prepare slightly above average application and perform slightly above average in interviews , and you will be selected, without a doubt!

The only challenge for you will be to understand what is "average application" :)

Best wishes for the future.

Hello Tanishk1234

The work experience is a stand out and will help differentiate your profile if presented well in the essays.
GMAT is slightly lower but may not be a deal breaker for ISB. Past scores are decent.
Some of the extracurriculars are also interesting and can add diversity if made relevant to the application and told as part of a larger single narrative.
What's missing here are your career goals which will be crucial in deciding fit with the school.
