Hello LewsTherinTelamon

Your academic and GMAT scores are very good and so is your work experience and that is the reason you were shortlisted for the PGP admission interview. You seem to have done a good interview to be waitlisted. As a reapplicant this year, you should perhaps prepare for a Very Good/Excellent interview performance which we can help you along with making a strong application docket. Please see my response below your questions:

1) Should I improve my overall GMAT? Is the split in Quant and Verbal relevant?
If you can improve then why not? As ISB accepts the best of your all attempts, one more shot at the GMAT will certainly help.

2) If I transition to PM role before applying, will it improve my chances significantly? Based on this I want to decide if I should apply for round 2 after landing a role in PM.
If you are sure of getting the promotion as PM then we can look at Round 2.

3) For LOR, should I go with my Direct Manager whom I report to, or the Product Manager of my team? Considering I want to move to PM role, would a LOR from my PM improve my chances?
ISB PGP - Letter of Recommendation Tips - https://www.isbmantra.com/blog/isb-pgp- ... mendation/ Please refer to our blog on how to choose the recommender.

4) Is there anything else I can do to improve my profile?
Please feel free to get in touch with us to discuss this in detail.

5) Any tips for ReApplication Essay?

Hi folks,

I am Sai Shekhar,
I was waitlisted in round 3 last year.

GMAT: 720 (Q51 and V35).
B.Tech: 7.3 CGPA /10. CSE from Osmania University (Campus itself).
12th: 91.6
10th: 9.5/10
Indian-Male-Engineer.

Work Experience:
I graduated in 2018 and have been working as a Software Engineer. Recently promoted after last year's application.

I am also scrum master of my team. So, I have some leadership experience.
Short term goal is Product Management.
Long Term goal is leadership position in a Software Company. (Though not so sure about this.)

After the rejection last time, I joined a program which up-skills people to get job in PM role. I am confident of landing PM role by myself soon.
I also was promoted recently to Senior Software Engineer.

Questions:

1) Should I improve my overall GMAT? Is the split in Quant and Verbal relevant?
2) If I transition to PM role before applying, will it improve my chances significantly? Based on this I want to decide if I should apply for round 2 after landing a role in PM.
3) For LOR, should I go with my Direct Manager whom I report to, or the Product Manager of my team? Considering I want to move to PM role, would a LOR from my PM improve my chances?
4) Is there anything else I can do to improve my profile?
5) Any tips for ReApplication Essay?

The feedback I received from ISB was that my interview went very well, but lost by a small margin. And that I should improve GMAT this time.
I am preparing for GMAT this time. (Dint get to prepare last time, applied to ISB in last moment in round 3.)

Hello YashShukla21

You have an excellent academic pedigree, percentage and GRE score with rich work experience. The answer to your Query 1 is that the GRE score would suffice and the answer to Query 2 is that the ISB very strongly believes that people succeed irrespective of weaknesses. Hence the career gap will not be viewed negatively provided you can explain the reason for the gap and how you make use of your gap time.

PS: I feel like I've wasted 50K with a very popular MiM consultant. Literally, I felt their salesman did better consulting than the Master's student consultant from a tier-2 European school they assigned to me. So, I'd also appreciate some discounts & offers. Really broke yaaa! :P

Thanks!

Here are the respones,
1) pretty good chances overall. I would've been a lot more confident with say a 20-30 point increase on the GMAT since it'll cover that 'above average' score on all areas of the application. Acads, workex (diverse area), extracurricular..all going for you

2) even if you don't want to settle abroad, with an MIM, you can get international experience for 3-5 years and then easily come back based majorly on your work-ex and less on your MIM brand

3) It is not just about a post-MBA salary but the growth thereon..due to the network, brand and more importantly the diversity you live with in that one year at ISB. Does change your perspectives about business and life!

4) For MBA abroad, I'd wait for another 2 years before applying. A better score (with continued career trajectory) can land you in the top 10 schools even. Question would largely be- where do you intend spend the next 5-8 years post-MBA.

You can reach out via www.strategy4gmat.com or the LinkedIn profile below.

Regarding discounts, I'd do you one better since you had a bad experience with another Consultant. If you don't like the experience after the first brainstorming session and an essay review, will refund the amount!

Cheers

Hello, Can I get my profile evaluated?

Background
Age: 28
Work Exp:5.3 yrs
Gender: Male

GMAT Score: 690 (Might get 700/710 in re-attempt, please suggest if it makes a considerable difference in my application strength)

Work Experience:
1. 5 years of work experience in Wind Turbine industry. 3.5 yrs with Vestas (danish company, among top 3 players in the industry). Worked at system level to calculate aeroelastic loads. Handled sales team's (technical bid manager’s) requests for product customization & wind farm optimization strategies (But no direct interaction with the client).
After 2 yrs promoted as Technical lead (unofficial designation) for repowering business in US, handled a team for 3 for this.
In the last 2 years switched to Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and worked on the product development of Offshore wind turbines. This role was more focused on New product development unlike the customization-focused role in the last company.
2. Experience involves load calculation and analytics support to sales team in the form of maturing bids for specific sites. Also worked on developing best practices, identify gaps, perform continuous improvement. As a tech lead for repowering directly worked with Sr. Director (Technical bid management head) to propose various feasible solutions.
3. Strategy projects such as technology implementation into values chain to match needs of post product development activities. Achieved a milestone: to reduce around 2% steel weight for towers.

Academic:
1. Graduation: B.E Mechanical Engg from Shivaji University. Held the first position in the class of 2015 (67% Absolute grading)
2. M.E in Design Engineering from BITS Pilani (8.67 CGPA Relative grading)
3. Xth : 86.36% XII th:70%

International Experience:
1. Closely worked with technical bid managers across the world mostly from US, Europe & APAC, in which I tried to analyze requirements & proposed optimized solutions.
2. As a loads Engg closely worked with teams in Denmark on various projects related to New product development. Worked with Noise experts from Denmark to help sound reduction at sensitive sites.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
1. Founder of Vestas Chess Club, Led Vestas Chess team to 1st FIDE international Corporate Chess Tournament in 2021. Also, a member of Vestas Sports club, co-organized various sporting events for a group size of 100+ players.
2. Speaker at 2 international conferences in 2017,2018
3. Published 2 research papers during my Master’s degree
4. Volunteered as M.E Students representative in BITS
5. Cofounded Chess Club during my bachelor’s (2011). Also won the zonal chess championship in 2012.
6. Member of Indian Climate Youth Network

Post MBA Goals:
Short Term: Work as a strategy consultant in a big consulting firm in the field of Energy. I am passionate about energy transition & climate change mitigation. So using my past exp in the wind industry I would like to consult projects in the renewable field.

Long Term: Work in leadership roles at Product companies focusing on UN sustainable goals.

Few Extra questions:
With the above profile & my goal post-MBA would you suggest aiming for European colleges? Sustainability/Renewables/Clean tech is much more advanced there so will it be more helpful?
Do you know any particular college which focuses on these areas?

Hi,

My advice formulating in my mind while reading your profile was that you should be applying to European programs because of the focus on sustainability practices in the region. Glad that you asked that question. Yes, your experience would be very relevant for companies in the region. Moreover, you can really differentiate yourself from other applicants by showing your sustainability focus- I say this because one of my applicants who based several of his essays on his work on sustainability was appreciated by b-schools - he is eventually going to IESE. RSM Rotterdam, IMD, HEC Paris besides IESE would be good choices. Also consider INSEAD - however INSEAD really desires an international experience and international orientation, so you will have to work hard in the application to bring this aspect out (specifically your international orientation)

Regarding ISB- everything in your profile sounds great. Submit a good application and you shall make it through. The only thing I would change about your profile is your GMAt score. So, I hope you are able to cross the 700 mark in the retake. All the best

Hello sritamasia,

You have a great sense of humour :) along with very good academic credentials and GMAT score. Please refer to my honest response to your queries below.

1. Basic Profile Review & Possibilities of Admit through ISB EEO (I know it's hard to predict but still kuch toh bol do...)
Considering your past academic achievements and rich though limited work experience and scope for more quality exposure which will come your way before you actually join the program you should definitely apply through the ISB EEO.

2. Should I apply(honestly) to top MiM programs in Europe? (Not sure if I want to settle abroad | I want to market products for the next billion consumers.)
I want to say 'NO' to applying to top MIM programs as you do not want to settle abroad. However, studying from top programs in Europe has its own advantages provided you know the local language. We can discuss this in detail in a one-to-one profile evaluation.

3. Considering that Marketing roles are almost similar in terms of pay and profiles at ISB & some top Indian MBA colleges like SPJIMR, and MDI (that accept GMAT), should I really focus on ISB(double the expenses)?
Anyday ISB.

4. Considering the work that I do is really good for a profile, should I work for 3-4 years, improve(or use the same) GMAT score and go for an MBA abroad? How soon can I do that?
Our founder has more experience with foreign schools, having recently graduated from MIT Sloan program and also having studied from another European school can help you with some solid facts through constructive one to one discussion.

8 months at an 4.5$bn Insur-tech unicorn.
Worked as a Brand Marketer for the first 6 months.
- Handled digital customer and partner communications journey using CRM platforms(https://gmatclub.com/chat, Emails & Push Notifications)
- Conceptualized and executed 2 large-scale product UX/UI projects.
- Independently did on-ground market research by meeting 101 insurance agents in Gujarat, Jharkhand, and parts of the north east.

Working in the CMO's Office since June and building the Go-To-Market Strategy for Health & International Travel insurance products.
- Really challenging yet fulfilling role with revenue upwards of 750Cr+. Lots of everyday interactions with key stakeholders from Flipkart, MMT, Policy Bazaar, etc. (Sometimes, even I'm anxious if ever I'll get such visibility after my MBA lol)
* I do have some experience of working with international team members with some officials of Allianz, Germany & UI Designers from Nigeria.
* If it helps, I also received the Quarterly RnR Award for being among the top 2% performers in a company of 4000+ employees.

> Extracurriculars include Trekking & Stock Photography Contribution.

I'll appreciate honest responses to some of the questions! Would also appreciate if you could add a way to contact you in the answer for Consultation before ISB R1.

Short-term goals: Brand Manager in FMCG.
Long-term goals: 22 saal mein kitne hi dur ka soch sakta hun?? But maybe Leading marketing for Digital-first FMCG startups.

1. Basic Profile Review & Possibilities of Admit through ISB EEO (I know it's hard to predict but still kuch toh bol do...)

2. Should I apply(honestly) to top MiM programs in Europe? (Not sure if I want to settle abroad | I want to market products for the next billion consumers.)

3. Considering that Marketing roles are almost similar in terms of pay and profiles at ISB & some top Indian MBA colleges like SPJIMR, and MDI (that accept GMAT), should I really focus on ISB(double the expenses)?

4. Considering the work that I do is really good for a profile, should I work for 3-4 years, improve(or use the same) GMAT score and go for an MBA abroad? How soon can I do that?

PS: I feel like I've wasted 50K with a very popular MiM consultant. Literally, I felt their salesman did better consulting than the Master's student consultant from a tier-2 European school they assigned to me. So, I'd also appreciate some discounts & offers. Really broke yaaa! :P

Thanks!

Hi RushS,

With your expected new GMAT score, good CGPA of masters from BITS, rich and unique work experience including international experience and strong extracurriculars, if presented well, you stand a very good chance of getting an interview shortlist. The short term goal shared here is very much in line with the past work experience and sounds convincing.

Regards,

Background
Age: 28

Work Experience:
1. 5 years of work experience in Wind Turbine industry. 3.5 yrs with Vestas (danish company, among top 3 players in the industry). Worked at system level to calculate aeroelastic loads.

Hello,

Kindly help me evaluate my profile for ISB - Round 2 application for AY 2023-24

I am 26 years old and have a work experience of 3.5+ years which includes the following:
- Aug 2018 - Aug 2019 - Franchise Owner of a very renowned premium milkshakes brand. My store was located in Hyderabad and after a profitable run for a year.
- Sept 2019 - Aug 2020 - Business and Product Development Executive at an Augmented Reality startup. I intricately contributed to the launch of the MVP version of the platform (just launched beta version when I had joined in Sept 2019)
- Sept 2020 - Feb 2022 - Product Executive at a Pharmaceutical organization in which I contributed significantly to the growth of the brands under my supervision, the division and the company as a whole (2 products with over 300% growth in sales, also started a digital marketing division for the company and hired the required professionals).
- In the meantime, I also started my own brand of premium milkshakes in Feb 2021 to cater to the corporate cafeteria space. Tied up with a couple of companies in this space and did very well (although faced competition from well established vendors, we were the highest rated vendor), although Covid halted further expansion. Getting back into business shortly :)

10th grade - 9.4 CGPA - CBSE
12th grade - 60% - CBSE
B.Pharmacy - 60%
GMAT Score - Aiming for 720+. Exam is due in the end of August. Scored a 620 a week ago with 2 weeks of prep.

1. Will applying in the second round hinder my chances of getting into ISB ?
2. Will my varied profile and non-engineering background give me an added advantage ?
3. I see quite a few people adding experience working for NGOs and similar causes. Since I do not have such experience, will it prove disadvantageous?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ISB has a very wide GMAT score acceptance range. 700+ with a good essay and interview could get you in.

Hello Anubhav7895

Work ex is the stand out feature of your profile and you will bring in good diversity to the applicant pool/class.
If you get your target score of 700, you will have a decent shot.
The only 2 things needed from here are 1) how well you present your application (which shouldn't be a problem reading your post below) 2) what career goals you convey to the adcom to convince that an MBA is the most logical next step in your career.
In fact, the above 2 points are the answer to almost all your questions too.

Your queries
1.Is it possible to do a switch like that and get a handsome salary package MBA job in India. yes absolutely, if anything your experience will only help your case, but when you say good salary or job what you have you to answer is what job/role are you targeting?
2. What are some Indian colleges I can target for.IIMs, ISB are the usual suspects
3.Is general MBA executive(1yr) suits my profile.Suits your profile, but whether it suits your goals depends on the goals
4.Please suggest various job profile which I can aspire.General Management, Operations are some starting points, Consulting could a stretch goal too, I'll recommend do your own research too
5.Showing activities such as political activist and a district president in a caste based social organisation will create a negative impactNot really, just present it well in the essays/application
6.As I have done 2 Master degrees with 56%(political science ) and 59%(sociology) via a correspondence route along with my job.Does this poor percentage in master create a bad impact for my college application or I need not to mention these degrees. As long as you get a good GMAT, this shouldn't matter

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello nickjay

On paper, all aspects check the box. Great GMAT, clear realistic goals, strong extracurriculars.
Work ex, while low on diversity, shows good potential of story telling (leading a team would have good career progression, achievements and impact to talk about).
Now the only thing left is to translate the strengths on paper to your application. As long as you do a decent job there, getting an interview invite has a high probability.

Hello Chitrangna

You have some things going for you- role, brand on the CV are your stand out strengths. Goals are clear too.
GMAT, while average should not be a deal breaker with your work ex.
You can compensate for the lack of extracurricular if you present the work achievements and goals well.
As long as you don't mess up the application, you should get an interview invite.
