Hi HaleEndMBA hope you are doing great

You've got a solid academic arc and strong industry focus.

I do understand you might be concerned about your GMAT verbal score but if you are open to exploring options in the US, you should consider Kellogg's one-year MBA program, Columbia's J-Term, and MIT Sloan Fellows program. Schools would not want to give up on a great profile only because of the verbal score. Additionally, I suggest exploring Tuck and Duke MBA by setting up calls with the admissions offices to express your interest and see if they can accommodate experienced candidates from the pharma sector that demonstrate a good fit for their programs. These schools have a strong focus on healthcare/pharma due to affiliation with med schools and are consulting powerhouses. Although the average age for the MBA cohort is much lower, the range spans between 24 to 38 years. Request the schools to connect you with alumni with similar background who too were on the higher end of the age spectrum so you can learn more about their experiences and what the schools can offer. Networking is key at this point.

If you are considering schools in the EU-UK, think of INSEAD (consulting), IMD (leadership), Oxford, Cambridge and LBS(consulting). I highly recommend reaching out directly to the admissions offices. It is not so uncommon to see 34-35 year olds in full-time MBA cohorts, but the adcom will have higher standards for evaluating older applicants. Evaluate each school holistically based on your prior expertise in the industry. If you prefer the one-year full-time MBA, focus on explaining why it's your preferred choice, such as the immersive experience, career opportunities, and career treks.

As a side note, if you prefer a full-time MBA experience without the uncertainty of getting into a top B-school outside India as an older applicant, IIM Ahmedabad's one-year MBA (PGPX) program could be a great fit. With the right networking and the prestigious IIM brand, you can still achieve your desired role in consulting and geographic location. I definitely feel you are better suited to IIM A PGPX than ISB given your age and experience.

Your goals are on point. Ideally look for a school that can provide you with the education, industry connects and resources necessary to achieve your long-term goals in the life sciences industry.

Best wishes

Hi HaleEndMBA,

I've reviewed your profile and I'm very impressed with your academic background, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

You have a stellar academic record, with a strong GPA and a GMAT score. You also have a wealth of work experience, in both consulting and industry. And your extracurricular activities show that you are a well-rounded individual with a strong commitment.

You have the academic credentials, the work experience, and the extracurricular activities that would make you a valuable asset to the program.

The ISB application deadline for Round 1 is September 10th. I would encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. The application process can be time-consuming, so it's important to give yourself plenty of time to gather all of your materials and complete your essays.

I'm also curious to know if you have continued your extracurricular activities during your professional journey. I think it would be great to hear about any ways that you have been able to give back to your community or make a difference in the world.

I wish you all the best in your application process. I'm confident that you will be successful.

Regards,
Team ISBMantra

Hi HaleEndMBA, some points based on an initial assessment:

1. Academics look good, considering the IIT pedigrees. The GMAT is also fine, could be a bit lower for LBS considering the Indian applicant perspective. Considering your overall profile and target schools though, a strong application (essays/ motivations etc.) would place you in a good position

2. Work experience is interesting: particularly the promotions and international (client) exposure are strong points of differentiation

3. Nomenclatures in consulting firms can be quite different (e.g. S& has an entry level Associate position, whereas big-4's Associate is senior to an Analyst there) hence I suggest just mentioning the target sector, function, geography and companies. Some firms, specifically boutiques also hire for specialist roles (considering your pharma experience) and this can be something interesting to consider. MBB's, big-4's etc. also hire for specialist roles besides the generalist roles, so having clarity on which of the two you are targeting would help

4. School selection looks fine. I would also consider INSEAD, HEC Paris and ESADE, if you are interested in the Europe/ Middle-East region: these schools have good alumni presence in consulting in these regions

5. ECs are fine in Bachelors and Masters. Any ECs you have been involved in after that?

Hope this helps some. Feel free to reach out for a deeper discussion.

Arvind

Hi Arivind,

Thanks for reaching out.
I haven't done much research on ESADE and IE MBA, assuming the language barrier would keep my job options very limited in Spain. I had ruled out HEC and SDA Bocconi for the same reason. How are the placements of non-spanish speaking International students from ESADE and IE? Should I consider applying to these schools too?

Kind Regards,
an MBA applicant

Hello HaleEndMBA,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile looks quite impressive on the surface, and you have a strong academic and professional background. Your undergrad and postgrad from IITs and a 710 GMAT score add great value to your profile.

Let me give you a distinctive evaluation of your target schools.
1. ISB (Indian School of Business):
Your strong academic background, work experience in consulting, and leadership experience in extracurriculars during your undergrad and master's make you a competitive candidate for ISB. Your post-MBA goal aligns well with your current experience, and your plans to start your own consulting company demonstrate a clear long-term vision. With a GMAT score of 710, you have a reasonable chance of being considered for admission at ISB.

2. Oxbridge (the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge):
Oxbridge schools are highly selective, and while your profile is strong, the competition will be intense. Your academic achievements, work experience in consulting, and leadership experience are all positives. However, with a GMAT score of 710, you may be slightly below the average for admitted candidates at these institutions. Nevertheless, your unique background and achievements make you a competitive candidate.

3. LBS (London Business School):
LBS is another top-tier business school with a competitive applicant pool. Your consulting experience and leadership roles in extracurriculars are valuable assets for your application. The GMAT score of 710 is around the school's average, which means your application will be considered seriously. Ensure that your essays and recommendations highlight your unique experiences and future goals.

4. Emory (1-year MBA):
Emory Goizueta's 1-year MBA program is known for its strong focus on consulting. Your background in consulting, academic excellence, and GMAT score make you a competitive candidate for this program. Emphasize your experience in driving digital transformation and providing analytics solutions, as these are highly relevant to the program's strengths.

5. Mendoza (1-year MBA):
As part of the University of Notre Dame, Mendoza's 1-year MBA program is known for its strong values and focus on ethical leadership. Your diverse experience in consulting and pharma aligns well with the program's values. Your GMAT score and achievements in academics and extracurriculars make you a competitive applicant.

6. USC Marshall (1-year MBA):
USC Marshall offers a 1-year MBA program that attracts professionals with significant work experience. Your consulting background and leadership roles make you a suitable candidate for this program. While your GMAT score of 710 is slightly below the school's average, your accomplishments and unique experiences can compensate for that.

Overall, your profile is strong, and you have a clear career trajectory in the consulting industry, which aligns well with your post-MBA goals. Make sure to tailor your applications to each school's specific values and strengths and highlight your achievements and experiences that align with their programs.

Good luck with your MBA applications!

Hello,

Requesting a profile evaluation for ISB, please. Suggestions for other suitable B-schools most welcome.

I have 5 years of experience as a software engineer in a MNC.

10th - 87%
12th - 75%
B.Tech - CGPA 6.78

While in college, I was the editor-in-chief of the college editorial board and secretary of the college music club. I was also part of the sponsorship team for college fests.

Six months after my graduation, while waiting for my joining letter, I founded a startup OPC (one person company) which dealt with digital marketing and advertising, eventually hiring two people for business development and social media marketing respectively.

In my work, I have done certifications in Robotic Process Automation, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud. I am currently working as Shift Lead in the telecom domain, managing 4-5 people every day.

I have volunteered in AIESEC and Toastmasters International. I was first a member, then Team Lead and then Local Committee Vice President at AIESEC. In Toastmasters International, I have served as club President, Area Director, and Division Director.

Additionally, I have done the Post Graduate Diploma in International Business Operations offered by IGNOU via distance mode to learn more about International Business.

I am currently preparing for GMAT and plan to take it soon.

Thank you for your time.

HaleEndMBA - thanks for the note. Can't comment much on IE and SDA in this context.

HEC, INSEAD and ESADE - their brands and alumni networks are strong to allow international (i.e. English speaking) candidates typically find opportunities in English-friendly countries e.g. Netherlands, UK, some German cities, Scandinavian countries, Middle-East, etc. I worked in the Middle East in strategy consulting post my HEC MBA, and met a number of alumni in consulting (from these 3 schools) during my time in Dubai. Apart from these programs, the ones in your initial list and some others mentioned in this thread are good options to consider too.

Once you have the list of programs, aim to shortlist them following a weighted prioritization criteria e.g. brand/ ranking, cost/ ROI, alumni presence in your target roles, pharma careers: target companies recruiting, geographic preference, average GMAT, etc.

P.S: Would be a good idea also to take a look at the schools' employment reports (ideally past 5 years) and do quick LinkedIn searches (filtering school name, company name and geography) to locate recent alumni.

4thWayOfGurdjieff hope you are doing great

Perhaps the most important aspect by which you will be judged is your career progression and learning curve. 5 years is a long time to work at any company. Show how you have progressed year over year, how you have taken on more and more responsibility through promotions, "functional" leadership roles, or cross-functional stakeholder management, and how you view the relevance of your work. If you have been an individual contributor due to the nature of your job, rather than focusing on job title changes, highlight the increasing challenges in various projects, promising results, and stakeholder management over the past five years. It would be beneficial to present a unique "hook" in your profile.

Many IT /software applicants apply to ISB, so competition within this group will be high. You will need to execute your application well to stand out. Your professional recommendation must also be exemplary. You need to unpack your experience and reconstruct your stories in a way that shows that working on high-impact projects has given you much more hands-on experience and the opportunity to interact with industry executives, more maturity of experience, and more ability to contextualize business problems than most techies considering an MBA.

Your toastmaster's engagement is good. But there's much room for introspection. What became of your digital marketing company? There might be some interesting talking points there.

Target a high GMAT because your GPA is low (it will matter).

Personalized advice tailored to your specific situation is just a phone call or message away. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you need help navigating your unique circumstances in the B School admissions process.

Hi 4thWayOfGurdjieff

We have reviewed your academic profile and work experience, and we are impressed with your achievements. However, we are concerned about your academic performance. We know that you have the potential to achieve great things, and we believe that a strong GMAT score will help you to reach your goals.

The avg GMAT score for PGP is ~710, and we believe that you should aim for a score of more than the avg score of the batch to make it up for your academic percentages. We offer a free profile evaluation, and would be happy to review your work experience with you and advise a way forward.

Wishing you all the best for the GMAT preparation.

Since Acads are average, target a higher GMAT score (720+) 4thWayOfGurdjieff.

Are poor/average academics a show-stopper at ISB?

ok, so why did you then discontinue? I am assuming that this was because your joining letter arrived. So, we really need to think through whether this entrepreneurship experience is adding any value at all.

Also, you've not mentioned your goals (motivation for ISB).

Anyway, all this can wait. GMAT should be your preference right now. All the best.

4thWayOfGurdjieff, some feedback from an initial assessment:

1. 10th/ 12th grades seem alright. The GPA is on the lower side, and you haven't mentioned the university name. An above average GMAT score (ISB's average = ~713) can alleviate concerns here, hopefully with balanced Quant & Verbal scores.

2. Your start-up experience can potentially be a differentiator to your (lack of a better word) traditional "Indian IT-Engineer" profile. How long was the start-up journey for, and why was it called off? Highlighting lessons learned from this journey can be interesting, and could even serve as motivation for an MBA.

3. Not much details about your work experience, any promotions and/ or increase in responsibilities, to highlight the arc? Aim to have strong achievements (e.g. projects) at work which can talk about some challenges you faced, the impact you had, the skills/ learnings you developed as a result. These anecdotes can strengthen your essays. Similar comment on ECs.

4. Since you haven't mentioned your post MBA goal, would suggest having a clear idea on your target sector, function and geography, ideally also companies and researching on whether these recruit from ISB. Linking ISB to your goal and highlighting the gaps that the MBA/ ISB would fill would then help you craft a strong narrative. Can suggest other B-schools based on your post-MBA goal and GMAT.

Hope this helps. All the best for the GMAT, and feel free to reach out for a detailed chat.

Hello 4thWayOfGurdjieff

Past scores are decent, look at scoring a 710+ on the GMAT in order to stand out.
Work ex shows good potential for story telling, in your essays, focus career progress, achievements and impact at work.
Similar feedback for the extracurricular activities and certifications. Great potential for story telling and some of these are B-School favorites, should really help you add diversity to your software background profile. The One Person Company is a great win too. Use them in your narrative to prove that your experience here will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Lastly, career goals cannot be commented upon (whether they are organic and realistic) due to lack of information around work ex. All I can say is that if you are from the IT background (judging by your graduation stream), Product Management might be a very good fit, but much more details are needed to understand your aspirations and fit with this goal. Anyway, you should be talking about your long term and short term goals, your personal motivation behind such goals and why ISB is the most logical next step in the fulfillment of these goals.

If you present career goals well (and score strong on the GMAT) you have a pretty got shot at getting an interview invite.

Hello HaleEndMBA

Don't really see any evident weaknesses in your profile.
Past scores are decent, 710 on the GMAT is decent too. Might not be high enough in order to stand out in a couple of schools on your list, but not a deal breaker either.
Work ex shows excellent potential for story telling. In your essays, focus career progress, achievements and impact at work.
Similar feedback for the extracurricular activities and book. Lastly, career goals are organic and realistic. All I can say is why MBA at all since you are in the industry already, but much more details are needed to understand your aspirations. Anyway, you should be talking about your long term and short term goals (which you already have), your personal motivation behind such goals and why ISB (or another B-School of your choice) is the most logical next step in the fulfillment of these goals.

If you present career goals well you have a pretty got shot at getting an interview invite.

Can anyone suggest a profile consisting of a GMAT score and other things for aiming for a sure-shot interview call from ISB and a possible convert too for someone with a 4-year experience in Tech Consulting
Just trying to figure out what all does ISB consider for Indian profiles apart from the usual. Please share your experience!

Hello AmeyPatil9696,

I am an ISB alum and have been guiding applicants successfully get into ISB for last 6+ years, below are the elements that ISB (or for that matter any global Business School) look for in applicants while deciding whether they should consider you for an interview invite and subsequently a final offer:

1. Are you an Academic fit to the cohort? - typically your grades (12th + Undergrad), the undergrad college and specialization, and GMAT/GRE are indicators for this aspect of evaluation.

2. Are you a Professional fit to the cohort? - career progression, achievements at work, industry knowhow etc. as described through your essays and as captured in your application form the pillars for this evaluation.

3. Are you a Cultural fit to the cohort? - unlike the other above 2 parameters, unfortunately (or fortunately for some), there is no clear cut assessment technique. However, adcoms use the essays and LOR as proxy to gauge your personality traits, value system, motivations etc. and determine whether you will be able to imbibe the ISB culture.

Hope the above helps.

Feel free to reach out if you seek more guidance !!

Cheers and all the very Best !

Hi,

I know I'm mentioning GRE score but will highly appreciate your help. Here's my profile:
Age: 25 yr

GRE Score: 324 [Quant:168, Verbal:156 , AWA:4]

Educational Qualifications:

Graduation: M.Sc. Phy + B.E. Electronics from BITS Pilani, 7.7 CGPA
H.S.C: 93.2, CBSE
S.S.C: 10CGPA, CBSE

Work Experience:
Working as a Software Engineer in PayPal (~32 months by March 2024).

Extra Curricular:
Have published 1 research paper during graduation.
Have knowledge of music production, can play multiple instruments (Guitar, Piano, Drums) but I don't have any valuable certification/participation to show for apart from college/office shows.

My primary doubt is whether I should attempt GRE again for a better score, given my profile?

Appreciate your time, thanks.
