Hi AbhinavKumar hope you are doing great!

I particularly like your work experience. There's an opportunity to show substantial learning by putting together the building blocks of the B2B business model you worked on. Demonstrating a thorough understanding of business through your perspective is an underutilized way of standing out in ISB applications.

You have a stellar GPA, but unfortunately, your GMAT is not at the desired level. I would suggest not letting this score demotivate you. Consider a re-take or GRE.

Your goals in finance seem completely unfounded. Have you researched how you might be able to make this transition post-ISB, which is a one-year program and does not offer the opportunity to intern for such a drastic change in your industry/function? This would require an in-depth understanding of your current profile, but I can suggest that if you work closely in your current role with FP&A teams (financial planning & analysis), you can, to some extent, set the context for your interest in exploring finance-related roles in the mid-term (but maybe not immediately). To give you an example, a business analyst working in the category management team at Chroma or in supply chain may get to work with the designated FP&A planners for that team on a routine basis. The underlying objectives for any business are containing costs while maximizing profits. If you wish to transition into Finance, you should either consider a longer 2-year PGDM or MBA, or get into beginner analyst roles in FP&A (possible after ISB as well) and then later boost your growth with CFA or similar. Getting finance-related certifications will definitely boost your career if your interest lies there.

Best wishes

AbhinavKumar - interesting profile. Your academics and GPA paint a much brighter picture than the GMAT score: would suggest retaking the GMAT if possible, particularly focusing on your sections and sub-sections to improve. Please reach out if you would like access to a free GMAT study plan (containing an Error-Log template) which I put together with insights from 730+ scorers.

The rationale for your post-MBA goal is not clear - please clarify why/ how you are interested in finance, and if you have taken up (at your job or outside) any finance projects. Once the rationale is clear, we need clarity on the specific domain (e.g. corporate finance, M&A, investment banking, PE/ VC finance, fin-tech, finance consulting, etc.) within finance which interests you and "why". Identifying companies and roles where you would like to transition into is a good step to arrive at answers to these questions. Also try to work on related projects at work, by working more with finance teams. Picking up freelance/ pro-bono finance projects (for start-ups for example) can also be interesting. Once the destination (target company/ role, function, geography) is set, identifying the right schools which can help you get there becomes easier. ISB, and other MBA programs which are 1 year or less, offer less room to transition sector/ function. A 2 year MBA (or even some 16-18 month MBA's with opportunity to do internships) can be better options to look at. Schools that are focused on finance (especially 2 year MBA's) and have a good alumni community, industry network etc. can also be good options to look at.

What are my chances of getting into a top 20 (T20) MBA program considering my background and qualifications? Particularly ISB is my first priority. Additionally, which other colleges in the USA/UK should I consider targeting, keeping in mind my preference for English-speaking countries and my career goal in consulting, where language proficiency plays a significant role?

AnanyaAnindita - well done on your GMAT!

Your experiences and ECs indicate strong analytical abilities and a balance of collaborative skills and ownership: consulting firms value these traits. Narrowing down on your target firms and geographies is important to prioritize the B-schools to apply to. ISB in India is definitely a good choice, some other geographies which are English-friendly and have good consulting careers include the US, UK, Netherlands, Germany (Munich, Berlin) and Middle East (Dubai & KSA). You stand a good chance at the top-20 MBA programs.

Our panel at admitStreet includes me (a HEC Paris MBA alum) and another ISB MBA alum: both of us have transitioned into strategy consulting roles post our MBA. Feel free to reach out if you would like to have a detailed discussion.

I think I can give this to you right here that you can qualify for our top 10 or nothing challenge, of course depends on a few things but overall, I think we had one qualified with similar profile.

ISB- Definitely feasible. You'd be a competitive applicant, assuming you do it right in the applications. There are a lot of common pitfalls that you need to avoid. But definitely can be done. Most of my clients sure have a great success esp. at ISB. Where we got them
US T-20, I'd say most schools are achievable, the only schools that may not be achievable are those that have less of a fit, about 3 by my calculations.
And as for top 15, you do have strong chances in most.

UK wise, the work experience is on the lower end, definitely would be difficult to make a case into top 5.

That is my honest feedback. You can apply for the challenge here- Challenge. You won't even need to type too much, just copy paste the above profile in the box.

Hello AbhinavKumar

If you want a short advice- retake the GMAT and target a 700+.
For longer advice, read on-

Academically, past scores are decent.
Work ex looks interesting and shows potential for storytelling. Focus on your career progress, achievements and impact on the business in your essays.
Diversity is helped by your extracurricular and hobbies. Make sure you make these relevant to the B-School application by proving how these activities will help you add value to the experience of your batchmates inside and outside the classroom.
Career goals are clear, though you will have to prove to the school what is your exact learning, experience, impact and accomplishments in your hobby that you will be able to make this career switch successfully.
But all this will most likely not compensate for your low GMAT score, so retake and then focus on the other aspects to build a strong profile.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Aditya_vig

ISB will evaluate your profile on four factors-

1) Academic Potential- your past scores are decent, but the GMAT is missing and makes it difficult to assess completely. Even suggesting a score is tough due to the limited information shared on the other points (see below). In absence of specific info from your side, you will get a generic suggestion to score above the average score of the school (710+).
2) Work ex- Work ex is more than just role and company. The depth or quality of work ex matters more than these bullet points. How has been your career progress and what have been your key achievements. ISB is more interested to know your career journey than the role and company you are in. Share more qualitative info here.
3) Diversity- This is the ability to prove to the school that you have certain unique qualities or experience via which you will be able to add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom. If you can prove that via your work ex, extracurricular (the volunteer activity for example) or even your UPSC experiences, then these can become an asset. But tough to say with the limited info given.
4) Career Goals- Your future aspirations are as much a part of your profile as your past experiences. You need to present yourself as a business leader who has a clear and realistic vision of their career. Talk about long term and short term goals, your personal motivation behind the same and how ISB will act as a stepping stone to help you achieve these goals. More importantly, in your specific case, why do you need a second MBA too.

You will need to work on the above areas to get an in depth review of your profile.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello ASHUTOSH2402

Past scores are decent and the target GMAT score will definitely help further.
Work experience is your strength and it shows good potential for story telling. You seem to have had a decent career progression, make sure you strengthen your essays by talking about your key achievements in your journey.
Diversity is helped by the nature of your work and also your extracurricular activities. Just make sure that you use these activities in your stories to showcase how these will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Career goals is where you lack currently. While "honing managerial skills, leadership qualities, and getting exposure to ideas from professionals from similar or diverse fields and expanding career opportunities" can be an outcome it is not a goal. As a future business leader you cannot state that your goal is to 'learn', but what to actually do with that learning. Talk about the following a) your long term career goals, say 5-10 years from now b) what is your personal motivation to have these goals c) your short term goals, say 3-5 years from now d) how will working in the said role for 3-5 years give you enough learning and experience to be able to transition into your long term goal e) how will ISB act as a stepping stone to help you achieve the short term goal f) what new skills will you gain at ISB and what existing skills will you strengthen g) what roles and companies are you targeting immediately post ISB (yes, you need to be that specific)

If you can weave a narrative around career goals that is clear and realistic, you don't have any other evident weaknesses in your profile and will have a strong shot at getting an interview invite.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Shezikiro

While your past scores are decent and your work ex shows potential for good story telling, if you want a more informed feedback on the target GMAT score, you will want to be more detailed on the information around your profile. Talk about the following-

Work Ex- Career progression and achievements.
Diversity- extracurricular and other experiences that give you qualities that make you a unique addition to ISB. What traits will you bring that will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Career goals- What are your long term and short term goals that need you to pursue PGP at ISB. Why ISB at all? Why now?

If you don't share information here, one would assume that then you wouldn't focus on these in the essays either. In that case, even a 720+ won't help you.
But if you have strengths in any of these areas, you could get in with a 680 too.
In absence of specific information, you will most likely get generic advice- score above the average score of the school (710+)

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Iti24

GMAT might be a tad bit low, unless you can compensate it by other strengths in your profile. Some of these might be-

Work ex- can you portray stellar career progression and achievements in your journey.
Diversity- can you showcase skills/experiences/qualities via your extracurricular/work ex/life experiences that will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom.
Career goals- can you present yourself as a leader with a clear and realistic vision of your career. What are your long terms goals and why. How will ISB act as a stepping stone in the fulfilment of these goals. What exact roles and companies are you targeting post MBA.

Since none of the information above is present, not sure if you will be able to compensate for the below par score.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

You have already gone through an admission cycle and rejection, why don't you expand more on your profile- what goals had you stated, what are your reasons to pursue an MBA, what do you think might have led to a rejection last year, what has improved from last year. Otherwise, you will end up repeating the mistakes of last year.

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hello Ayushiseth09

Pretty balanced profile, even if the work ex looks a little on the lower side.
Not a deal breaker, just be prepared to showcase career progression and achievements that can rival other applicants' who have spent more time in the industry.
Industry and work ex adds diversity for sure, do you have any extracurricular activities worth talking about?
Goals are clear and organic too.
Curious to know what are you expecting on the GMAT? If you get a 720 or more, I believe you have a good shot at getting an interview invite.

Hello starzsat0330

Higher side of work ex not a hindrance, but your lack of information around your profile just might be.
Since you have not shared a lot of relevant information needed for an informed profile evaluation, makes me assume you might not be able to portray it strongly in the application either.

Regarding your question around the target GMAT score, you can get in with a low score too if you can compensate it by other strengths in your profile. Some of these might be-

Work ex- can you portray stellar career progression and achievements in your journey.
Diversity- can you showcase skills/experiences/qualities via your extracurricular/work ex/life experiences that will help you add value to the experience of your batch mates inside and outside the classroom. (Your pharma experience can help here)
Career goals- can you present yourself as a leader with a clear and realistic vision of your career. What are your long terms goals and why. How will ISB act as a stepping stone in the fulfilment of these goals. What exact roles and companies are you targeting post MBA.

Since none of the information above is present, not sure what score might be enough. In absence of specific information, you will receive generic advice such as score above the average of the school (710+).

You may want to read here on what factors work in a profile and here to add to your research on career goals.

Hi everyone,

I have 10 years of experience in the pharma industry (Quality, R&D, Project Management).

10th class: 88%

12th class: 88%

Bachelors in pharma: 6.79 CGPA

Certifications: PMP Certified and LSSGB (In progress)

Currently preparing for GMAT and want to know what score will help in clearing ISB.

Is my higher side of the experience is a bottleneck in applying and clearing ISB.

Is my profile really suits for candidacy of ISB.

Hi ASHUTOSH2402,

Please see below our feedback on your profile from ISB PoV.

Given you have more than 8+ years of work ex., which is more than the average ISB students' work ex., focus would be more on your work ex. compared to academics. Your industry and nature of work ex. (HR industry and across its value chain) would definitely help give you an edge over other candidates. Additionally, we believe working in both private as well as public sector companies would only make your work ex. more diverse as the DNAs of these organizations are very different.
Your chances of making it to ISB would increase if you are able to meet your mentioned target score. We believe any score to the north of 710 would be a good score, given your profile.

We would request you to narrow down your extra-curricular activities (quality over quantity) and start articulating post MBA aspirations (if not already). The reason for pursuing an MBA should be projected as the optimal path for reaching your post MBA goals, and therefore we suggest you further sharpen your existing thought process.

All the best and hope this helps.

We are a bunch of ISB alums who help potential ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay reviews and interview mocks. Feel free to book a 15 min free session for more discussion- https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

School choice is good, and I believe you can get into the schools of your choice with the current profile.

The only change I would suggest is the post-MBA goal. Please ensure it is feasible first as VP post-MBA seems slightly too ambitious.

Currently preparing for GMAT and want to know what score will help in clearing ISB?
750-760 (only because your work ex is in the higher range- also despite this there might be some officers who will be hesitant.

Is my higher side of the experience is a bottleneck in applying and clearing ISB?
Yes, a lot but definitely not a complete road block. You can always do a EU MBA instead if ISB is not something you're completely inclined to.

Is my profile really suits for candidacy of ISB?
Honestly, the profile is better suited for one year programs but ISB's average class work experience is much lower, so it will be difficult.
