Hi jlgdr,

The phrase ‘number of’ does not change the meaning of the sentence, instead it corrects an error that is present in the original sentence.

• Like other performance indicators, the growth rate of a start-up business is generally related to the amount of
o time
o and resources
• dedicated to the endeavor.

This is the structure of the sentence. The word ‘and’ creates a parallel list of two items ‘time’ and ‘resources’. So, the phrase ‘the amount of’ is applicable to both the items.

- the amount of time
- and the amount of resources

Now, ‘time’ is uncountable noun so it’s correct to say ‘amount of time’, but ‘resources’ is a countable noun, hence it’s incorrect to say ‘amount of resources’.
That’s why it is changed to ‘the amount of time and the number of resources’ in the correct option.

There are two concepts being tested here : 1) Like Vs As 2) Countable nouns

Since 'Like' can only be used to compare nouns or pronouns and 'As' can be used to compare phrases or clauses, this sentence would need 'As'. So that leaves us with options D and E.

Within D and E we see that the difference lies in the last part of the sentence where they are using different modifiers for time and resources. Since option E uses the correct modifier for each : 'amount' for time and 'Number' for resources it is the correct option. Note: Amount cannot be used for Resources because it is a countable noun.

Hence , answer is E.

In the hall, just look at the topic this way; since the 'resources' and 'the amount' do not gel, boldly dump A, B, and D in one go for using 'the amount of time and resources'.

Between C and E, it is well known that 'like' cannot be used to compare verbed clauses as in C.

E is the answer.

When you are saying two things are similar, aren't you comparing them and coming upto the conclusion that they are similar.

For example:

Like Ramesh, Suresh is intelligent.

Here you are comparing Ramesh and Suresh. You are saying they both are similar in terms of intelligence, no?

Yeah exactly!,
If i say "As Ramesh is, Suresh is intelligent.

Is it true. If its a NO.

I am a bit confused why is that the later case is preferred in this question to the former, which uses the word "Like".

Has anybody analized what does this text is talking about? How can number of resources help startup 2,3,4? Level/Volume of resources - yes $1 000, 100 people, 10 investors!

Amount can be used with plural/countable nouns in rare cases when we mean the volume:

Dear Experts,

Some trustable sources (NYT, The Economist) use Amount with plural/countable nouns in rare cases when we mean the volume. I yhink this is the case in this question, and that OA is incorrect. Please help to justify my thoughts.

‘Resources’ are countable, so ‘amount’ is used incorrectly.

This means we can discard A B and D.

C incorrectly uses ‘Like’ to compare clauses.

This means that the right answer is E.

Will this sentence be grammatically correct?
"Like other performance indicators, the growth rate of a start-up business is generally related to the amount of time and number of..."

Since, growth rate is a performance indicator, "Like" should be used technically

In the question "performance indicators " are being compared to "growth rate " . Both are noun . How is the usage of "like" incorrect ?
can someone explain ?
