Hi jzqmah,

To apply to competitive Masters in Finance Programs, a high Quant Score is a 'must', so it's understandable that you would want to retest.

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your 4 recent CAT score results (along with your Official GMAT Score) show that you essentially performed the same each time (Q38 +/- a few points). Based on what you've described, your studies so far have been 'book heavy'; many Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level - and it looks like that has happened to you as well. Continuing to study in that same way will likely not lead you to the Quant Score that you're looking for though, so you will likely need to invest in some new, non-book resources.

Thankfully, the GMAT is a consistent, predictable Exam, so you CAN train to score at a higher level. With 2 months of study time, you could potentially improve a great deal.

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

GMAT beginner just like you. Applying for MSc programs (UK).

Depends on the type of learner you are. I prefer to learn maths by doing questions and reading solutions. I practically obtained a Masters in Engineering by doing it that way. However, some people prefer to learn from books. In my opinion, if you do questions then ensure that you properly analyse the solution when you go wrong and try to understand fundamentally what is actually going on and why, that is just as good. Ensure that you practice some really hard questions. I find the GMAT club tests on here really test your understanding. The OG is way too easy. Even 90% of the 'very hard' ones are still too easy.

Hope this helps, probably not..

Hi jzqmah,

If you've truly been studying consistently for the last 3 months by using a 'book heavy' study approach, then I don't think that you'll be able to get from a Q40 to a Q49 studying in the same ways as before. Simply working through lots of additional practice questions probably won't be the 'solution' to this either. You need to change how you 'see' (and respond to) the Quant section of the GMAT - and "your way" of approaching that section has gotten you stuck at this current level. Thus, I think that you would be benefit a great deal by investing in a GMAT Course of some type. From what you describe, you have plenty of time to study and improve - now you just have to make sure that you're focused on learning the necessary Tactics along with whatever content areas that you need to review.
