Lori's Laminate has set an annual goal of cutting headcount at its Texas factory by 7% yearly, while maintaining or increasing laminate tile production. Did Lori's Laminate achieve this goal from 2006-2007?

(1) For 2006, the Texas factory employed 100 workers and produced 1,110,000 tiles.
(2) For 2007, Lori's Laminate employed 85 workers and produced 1,540,000 tiles.

Breaking Down the Info:

We have two places to consider for this question, Lori's Laminate and the Texas factory. We only know the Texas factory is a subset of Lori's Laminate. We also need to check if the Texas factory "maintained or increased" laminate tile production.

Both Statements Combined:

Lori's Laminate has 85 workers in 2007. Since the Texas factory is a subset of Lori's, the Texas factory can only have 85 employees at most. Thus the employee count went from 100 to below 85, which confirms that we have at least a 15% cut in headcount.

Yet we still have to check whether the Texas factory "maintained or increased" laminate tile production. We only know the Texas factory produced 1.54 million tiles at most in 2007. We need to compare this number with the production in 2006, and we cannot confirm whether they produced 1.11 million tiles or more in 2007. Thus combined it is insufficient.

Answer: E

there is no mention of "at most" in the second statement.
1st and 2nd statement both states the employees produced 1.11 million in 2006 and 1.54 million in 2007.

combining both statements, I see that -
1. there is 15% decrease in employee headcount
2. there is increase of production, despite the decreasing. hence lori has increased its production from 2006 to 2007.

This seems sufficient and thats why my answer would be C.

According to me
1 says 2006's workers and number of tiles._ not sufficient
2 says 2007's workers and number of tiles - not sufficient
Taking together, we conclude that head count of workers reduced and number increased of tiles
So isn't c the answer???

The Texas factory is only a subset of Lori’s Laminate. Statement (1) gives the Texas factory’s 2006 numbers, but Statement (2) gives Lori’s Laminate’s 2007 totals, not the Texas factory’s. Since we don’t know how much of that 2007 production came from the Texas factory, we cannot confirm whether the factory itself maintained or increased production. That missing link makes the data insufficient, so the answer is E, not C.
