Hello guys,
I’m applying for MSF/MAcc programs and would like to do a profile evaluation!
Asian female, 22 yrs old
Nationality: Chinese + U.S. permanent resident
Undergrad: UT Austin McCombs (Accounting major + Finance minor) graduating in May 2020
UGPA: 2.92
GMAT: 740 (Q49 V41 IR8 AWA5.0) percentile 97
Work Experience: no full-time; 1 summer internship at an insurance company in China, worked as Assistant Manager in the Finance & Accounting Dept. for two months
Extracurricular: Executive Committee member at UT’s Chinese Student Association; Keyboard player + treasurer in student band (the band was started by me and 6 other friends)
Languages: English; Chinese Mandarin (native); German (intermediate level)
My main problem is that my gpa is too low. To make things worse, it actually has a downward trend (my freshman year gpa averaged 3.93 and went down drastically afterwards)
My low gpa is basically cuz of family problems + financial stress + immaturity, and I’m trying to write an optional essay to address that. Basically my Asian parents are extremely controlling and toxic. Social life is strongly discouraged; I can’t hangout w friends at their apt.; I’m not allowed to take Uber cuz they think it’s dangerous so basically I should only stay on campus; I never get to shop for my own cloths my mom just choose for me based on her taste, etc. etc. They check my bank statement regularly and ask me to explain every single transaction including minor ones for food. After my first year in college I had enough. So starting my 2nd year, I found a part-time job at a restaurant near campus and worked as cashier + server for roughly 25 hrs per week. That was when my gpa started to suffer. Yes my parents still pay for my tuition but I wanted to support myself in all other life expenses so that I can have at least a normal amount of social life and freedom. I do admit that I could do better at time management and that at some point I prioritized the job over school; I was just too obsessed with the feeling of being able to spend my own money and have control of my life.
Guys I apologize for the long post but I’m really concerned with my gpa and would appreciate any help/advice. What are my chances? Would my GMAT possibly compensate for my gpa? Any school/ program suggestions? Any advice on how to address the gpa, I mean, is it okay to tell the story as above?
Thanks in advance!
