I would hope to apply by Round 2. Depending on my LSAT, I may apply jointly to the JD/MBA program or just to the MBA program.
Background and nationality: 28 white male, LGBT
Undergrad Information: Low prestige state school, Economics & Political Science, minor in Spanish. 3.6/4 GPA
GMAT: Practice tests around 720
Work experience and leadership: 1 year abroad in investor relations role, 5 years as investment analyst in NYC on the trading floor of a large international investment bank. Promoted once and now manage a team of 3. Also serve as treasurer for the national LGBT employee group. I also helped my father start a logistics company and am CFO and co-owner of that small business.
Community and others: I am a member-firm representative of the the finance industry's LGBT association and volunteer on the best practices committee. In undergrad I was on the executive board of the student government for multiple years and was chair of the state-level student advocacy association for two years after graduation. LI am also a volunteer mentor for at-risk LGBT youth through a non-profit.
Why MBA? After half a decade of successful investment experience, I want to transition to a role that combines investment and operations/management in a more hands-on, applied way. The MBA is the best way to develop the knowledge and skills base to combine those.
Post MBA goals: After 5 years investing in megacaps and helping to run two startups, I want to move to the middle ground: microcaps and private companies where my expertise from an MBA and early investing career would allow me to provide advice along with capital. Most small businesses that succeed beyond 2-5 years do not effectively scale into their market, leaving tremendous opportunities on the table. My mission would be to help businesses to breach that barrier and scale into the available opportunities. Ultimately, my goal would be to establish a search fund to buy and operate a small business to bring it into scale myself.
Anything else? I passed level 1 of CFA and am taking level 2 in December. (had hoped to have it by now, but have COVID to thank)

Your profile looks great with a quantitative background. Starting with stats, you seem to exhibit great academic potential through your GPA, CFA, and if you manage to get 720+ in the actual test. Your work experience seems great with a good amount of international experience and elements of leadership and initiatives. But I would like to know why there is just one promotion in the span of five years in a company (Wharton does stress career progression). Your ECs are amazing exemplifying a mature leader. Also, for me, your post-MBA goals perfectly make sense and are well-aligned with your prior career. Overall, I think your profile can provide a strong story but make sure to present it well-connected for which you will need to do a lot of soul searching and yes, try to stick to Wharton's values throughout your application. Thanks so much for the super speedy reply, Kashish. I was actually thinking about the promotion after I posted. I think technically I was promoted twice (rotational program to analyst to associate) and am due for my next promotion next year. Unfortunately that’s after I would apply! Fortunately, I can express a serious expansion of my responsibilities and the addition of people I manage to illustrate career progression. In short, my biggest obstacle right now is the GMAT, which is thankfully something I have control over, and LORs, which are harder for me.
I had been hesitant due to what I see as poor academic pedigree (3.6 GPA is below median and state school isn’t impressive) and the difficulty of lining up LORs. In my current role, you get a pay cut at bonus time if they think you’re leaving and I’d hate to get the pay cut but also not get accepted in to the MBA program. Once my GMAT comes back, if it’s strong enough I guess you’re saying I have a good shot so I should bite the bullet!
