Hi deep31993,

Your profile looks amazing. Your stats seem great and if you hit your GMAT target, you have a great shot from this angle. Your work experience, too, looks great with impact (first in your early career and then obviously in your current job), clear career trajectory (that Wharton looks for), and leadership and international experiences. Your ECs clearly exemplifies a leader in you in the same field in which you have professional expertise. Also, your post-MBA goals are pretty aligned with your career. So, overall you provide a well-aligned profile and it all boils down to how you present your story. You are welcome to hop on a call with us to discuss your chances to some good schools in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi thanks for the analysis. Can you advise an honest target score. I am getting 710-720 in my mocks. I know Wharton requires more than this, but what if I don't get the desired 750+? My chances are bleak in that case?

Considering your profile I think you will need around 730-740 for your GMAT. Also, I would say do not stress so much about the gmat because the problem for an Indian, male, engineer is not getting a very high gmat score. You will see people who are good with exams have a 750+ but still they don't get in these top programs. The bigger problem is not able to present a unique story with the same background. So, write your test without aiming for a particular target, just keep in mind to do your best and get as higher as you can (believe me, it does work, try implementing this mindset in your mocks). Wish you all the luck with your test! :)

GRE: 321 159Q & 162V Will probably retake to get my Q up. Was scoring in low 160s for Q in practice tests

Work experience and leadership: Current role is an enterprise SaaS sales for a "Forbes Next Billion Dollar Startup" company. Started with the company as one of the first non engineering hires. Came in with general directions to "grow the business" and was doing everything from demos with the CEO, cold calling, marketing events, go to market strategy, market segmentation exercises, setting up CRM etc. Switched over to full time sales as the company became more mature and structured. Hi WM88,

Your profile looks great. Starting with stats and acads, you have exhibited your academic rigor by 3.4 and achieving a 4.0 in one semester (even when you have faced several health complications and you should definitely discuss it in the optional essay). For your GRE, yes, you need to have a higher quant score since Wharton anyway stresses quantitative scores. Your role in your current company seems exciting, especially the part where you get to work in different functions. You have had a great impact on this organization. If your previous experiences, too, exhibit a great career trajectory and awesome professional experiences, you are good to go for Wharton. Also, I can see very interesting ECs. Here, too, you exhibit great leadership experience. So, overall, I feel you present a good profile for your target schools (though Wharton can be a stretch). We are happy to discuss further about your chances and would love to hear your story :) . Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi sj296,

Your profile seems great. Your undergrad stats are good and hope you get a solid GMAT score. Your work experience is really great. You have worked in different industries and took many roles during your experience (which will help you if you want to start your own VC-fund in long term). I can see your impact on the organizations and instances of leadership as well. In this area, you can really ace it! Your ECs, while are great and worth talking about, they are outdated. It would be good if you may bring out some of your hobbies as well. Now, overall, I see you have a shot at Wharton but you will face a lot of competition here. So, more depends on your GMAT and how well you present your story. I advise you to shortlist some target and safety schools as well. You are welcome to hop on a call with us to brainstorm some great schools and your chances there.
Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

3) After that, I joined a family office of an HNI as an investment analyst to the source, evaluate, execute and monitor startup investments. Formalized the whole peace and set up an INR 200 cr fund. Executed 7 deals in tech startups, exited from 2, and sold assets of a closed portfolio company to an Israeli startup.
Closed 2 M&A for the family office.

Extra-Curricular:
- Was part of the apex body of 18 members who used to organize the tech symposium in the college (10K + participants & 1 Cr prize money)
- Used to teach kids from the economically disadvantaged backgrounds during my college.

Short Term & Long Term Goals: Join a VC fund or a PE fund in short term. Setting up my own early stage VC-fund in the long term.

Hi jayarora

Thanks for sharing your profile and MBA aspirations!
My name is Shimri Winters, I head the strategy here at ARINGO

You have a very interesting profile! From what I can see:
Academics – sounds great! Top 1% on all Indian engineering exams. A Masters degree and a good institution definitely help and make you stand out from other applicants

GMAT - Well, 760 is an excellent score! And Q50 V44 is pretty balanced ( a bummer about the IR3… most schools look for IR4+, but as you got 44 in the verbal, and 760 in total, I don’t see any issues here, you can also mention in your optional essay that you received an IR8 in a previous test)

Extracurricular activities – Winning 15 Hekaton’s is AMAZING! WOW!!! Never seen that one before ? and two internationals? Great! Toastmasters, Piano, Softball all great (you sound like a fun person!)

Work Experience –so, this sounds like your biggest strength – but I was not 100% sure if you have been working for one employer in three different locations? Or moved employers? In any case, working in 3 countries, managing people, working directly with the client – sounds amazing for such a young professional! This is also what you need to show in the apps – you were given more responsibilities than your peers, and kept getting appreciation (fast-track promotions, money, recognition) from your managers

Volunteering – great – love the fact that you are involved and your activities really share how you care about the community

Missing info
School wish list – you are probably aiming for several schools, would love to know which!
Career goals – this is key for your application. But I also need to understand more about your work experience (client interactions, managerial experience promotions) to help you find the best goals

All in all, I think you have all the ingredients, but obviously, as you come from such a competitive background, it all depends on how good your apps are, and how correlated your aspirations are with your past and with the schools’ specializations[list]

All in all, sounds like you have a solid profile!
Happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps if you send me your CV and any other info to Shimriw@ARINGO.com

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Experts,

Please provide your honest reviews for my profile-

1) Background and nationality - Female, 28, Indian, IITian.

2) Undergrad Information - CGPA 8.4/10 BTech Petroleum Engineering - IIT ISM Dhanbad

3) GMAT: 740 (Q50 V41 IR4) - Kind of freaking out about the pathetic IR score - hope you can shed some light if this can be a deal breaker!

4) Work experience and leadership - I have worked for 6 years in world's #1 oil and gas services provider. I joined my segment as the only female field engineer and worked across various field locations in India - onshore/offshore. I then progressed to Account Manager / Sales engineer role in which I handled PnL of $10M account, submitted bid worth $100M, working alongwith Sales team from Romania. I then moved to Project Manager role where I handled a diverse team of approximately ~50 people from different product lines and lead high visibility projects in India. I was also the Peer reviewer for my segment for all South-East Asian countries. In these 6 years, I have published 8 research papers, across 6 international Oil and Gas Conferences. I have been recognized as the top performer by the company's headquarter in various internal events.
I recently resigned from this position to join a HealthCare startup as General Manager - Business Development. I will have ~6 month experience in this role when I will apply to B-Schools in R2.

Community and others - I am an avid trekker and I have lead difficult Himalayan treks for a group of 8-10 people on average (Roopkund, Stok Kangri, Everest Base Camp). Apart from this, I am content developer for NGO which aims to teach underprivileged children. I also take care of new energy initiatives in my family business - introduced molasses renewal to generate electricity for sugar cane factories.

Post MBA goals - I want to be an Investment banker and contribute towards sustainable future in Energy world.

Anything else? - I am applying with my husband (GMAT - 750, IITian, similar profile as mine) to B-schools although for Wharton, he is submitting his application in R1 and I would submit in R2. Please shed some light on how B-schools perceive couples who apply together?

Thanks a lot for your reviews in advance!

Hi Guys,

Shobana here from India. I'm looking to apply to B schools for 2021 intake. I'm quite unsure about my chances with Wharton, but if you'll have any inputs or can suggest universities I must apply to based on my profile, do let me know. Will be happy to hear :)

Here it goes!
Nationality - India
Female, 23 years
Work experience - 2.5 years
NGO - 2 Years

Academics -
10th - 9.4/10 (CBSC Boards)
12th - 91% (CBSC Boards)
Undergrad - Genetic Engineering (Extensively Research based)
GPA - 8.7/10
Major project - Worked with a prestigious research organization - Instem
Primary Focus - Neuroscience

GMAT - Yet to take (Nov/Dec)

Quick description -
I'm a genetic engineer-turned-marketer who gets her kicks from helping brands grow with 'targeted messaging/storytelling'. Having built a strong brand managerial experience of about 2.5 years across startups & e-commerce, I believe that an MBA at this point will help me accelerate my career growth.

At the age of 22, I have been successful in building a startup alongside the founders between 2018-2019. I have helped bridge the gap between 100+ weaving communities & skilled artisans with brands like Reliance, Lifestyle, Timberland, Nordstorm, Ralph Lauren and more. The primary theme was to reduce the carbon footprint in the fashion industry and integrate more local artisans into the supply chain. I have also generated a revenue of more than 2 million in sales in less than a year and managed 100+ leading brand accounts end-end (globally).

At that point, I pivoted my career to fully focus on brand marketing at one of India's leading e-commerce platforms. I joined as the youngest player in the team of Flipkart Private Brands , assisted in-app marketing campaigns, strategized and executed influncer campaigns in fitness space, lead the content drive for a launch of over 500 products in less than 6 months, audited and revamped the marketing assets on app & catalogues of over 1000 products in baby care, school supplies & toys category. Over this period, I also lead the marketing piece for the launch of multiple licensee brands like HRX audio (audio & fitness brand) at Flipkart, Adventure Force by Walmart (Exclusive toys series).

Gained expertise over industries - Fashion, Home care, Audio & Electronics, Baby care & toys

NGO/others - I have demonstrated history of working for a leading NGO in educational space for over 1.7 years. I volunteered to teach, lead media & raise funds for the benefit of the underprivileged children in India. This concentration really strengthened my EQ and helped me appreciate the power of education. I have also trained and engaged with Autistic children as a part of 'Rare disease day' during my undergrad. We created an offline platform to mediate medical consultancies (from genetic counselors & doctors) for children/ families with a pedigree of disorders.

Extracurriculars -
- Indian Classical/Carnatic singer with 10+ years of training
- Earned a degree at level 2 in Carnatic Vocals with 90%
- Writer & poet at instagram; Themes of writing - Maudlin, philosophical, Contrarian & ergodic
- Yoga and dance enthusiast
- District level Badminton player

Schools applying to - Wharton, Kellogg, Tuck, Schulich, Rotman
Interested in - Brand Marketing & Advertising

Please share your thoughts & inputs, it will be really helpful in structuring my process of application :)
TIA.

Hello gonerias,
You have a lot of things going for your application to Wharton.
An IR of 4+ is desirable and your score is borderline, so that should be ok, considering your score of 41 in Verbal.
You WE is enviable at the oil and gas field, though the AdCom would want to know why you changed roles before your MBA and into a healthcare startup, which is so different from your previous experience. I think this is something you should address in your essays.
Your trek to base camp will be a very good story in grit, determination and leadership. For your Volunteering, you will have to show the impact than saying you developed content. Did you also teach the children? The length of your engagement and what did developing content translated to for the children will be the key here.
Your post-MBA goals again do not match your prior experience, and you will have to give them much thought. I am also not clear how they will contribute to a sustainable future.
B-schools view couples applying to their programs favorably. For them it could mean an increased certainty of accepting admit (read increase in yield) and a human interest story to the cohort.
Hope this helps.

Hi gonerias,

Your profile seems great. Let's have a look step-by-step:

- Stats: Amazing with good GMAT (we have candidates scoring between 600-700 getting into top-notch programs, so I do not think an IR OF 4 will be deal-breaker :) )

- Work experience: I can see a very clear career trajectory with amazing leadership experiences and your impact on the organization. You have published research papers, have significant career achievements, and an amazing global exposure (you should bank on it). I also liked the fact that initially you joined as the only female field engineer, especially in India. But I do not understand after such a great experience in oil and gas, why you pivoted to healthcare? Also, your post-MBA goals are entirely different from your professional background and how do you connect Investment banker and sustainable future? I would like to know about it :)

- ECs: Again amazing. Being a trekker with such good leadership experience, I think, will bring a beautiful story. Your experience in family business sounds cool too. Just make sure you portray your NGO experience well.

So, I think you tick all the boxes, and one major box that needs to be ticked is bringing an amazing story on the table. We have many candidates from oil and gas getting into top-notch schools and even currently working with some. You may read the story of one candidate and take insights from his real essays here. About your question of applying as a couple, I think B-schools consider them fairly well, in some cases when one candidate is stronger and the other one on borderline, rather favorably. We are happy to discuss further your chances and would love to hear your story and may help you grow your networking. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!
