Hi Guys, I'm a prospective MBA applicant for the class of 2020. I know applications have not opened yet but I wanted to ask you: do essays for the top B-schools (H/S/W, Haas, Sloan etc.) generally change from one year to another?

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

I agree with Scott that there are a tonne of things you can do before the applications open, although the Stanford deadlines are out now, and they have retained last year's essays. Have a look here : https://gmatclub.com/forum/stanford-s-2017-18-admissions-deadlines-and-essay-questions-238603.html

Here's what you can do now:
1. Reach out to students/ alumni and find out more about their target programs.
2. Sign up on school websites for info on virtual/physical info sessions/ coffee chats
3. Beef up your extra-curricular involvement if you lack there.
4. Get your stories together- look back into your life and datamine important stories that could have any significance in the MBA admissions.
5. talk to people within your post MBA target industry to get better idea of your career goals / roles available etc.

That's a lot of work!

Great question. It really depends on the school. First, regardless of the school, you can start to work on your overall application planning now. Preparing your goals, deciding why you want an MBA and drafting a generic "Why MBA, short-term and long-term goals" essay would be a good use of time.

Stanford does not usually change the questions (though we will see for sure soon). HBS has used a similar question for the past few years (last year was the same as 3 years ago and 2 years was slightly different), but this year things may change a bit. It is too early to tell.

Sloan has appreciated the optional statement, so chances are that remains the same. However it is too early to tell what the rest of the application will look like.

While we don't know for the other schools yet, stay tuned! Good luck.

Best,
Scott

Great! Thanks so much for your quick reply!

You are most welcome. Enjoy the weekend!

Best,
Scott
