Hi Jon,

Thank you for the positive note.. Yes my age is worrisome and I am trying to find out my best fit. I am contemplating on 1-year MBA programs (US & International BSchools). Selecting the right set schools is an issue I am facing as well.

My purpose for an MBA is :

1. (Short Term Goal) I have been working in the finance domain (risk roles) for the past couple of years and my recent stint as an assistant manager was exciting and challenging. As I am moving into applied analytics, a new field, it may be difficult to fit into a managerial role. As I am crossing my 30's I feel that it would be more appropriate for me to accelerate into senior roles than having to start over again. An MBA could help alleviate this concern.

2. (Long Term Goal): Leading a company to perpetuate organizational growth, innovation & efficiency has been a real passion. It is something that I strive to do currently amongst smaller teams/departments that I managed. Scaling that to a multinational level would be a long term endeavor.

For the masters in data science, I am looking for programs in the US since the data science jobs are much more in the US and usually require a higher degree of skill set and hence more challenging.

The free consultation sounds interesting! Will be glad to share more details. Thanks much..

Hi Businessconqueror,

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I wanted to move into the analytics domain albeit in a managerial kind of role, hence the need for the MBA. I am contemplating applying for the coming intake but I wasn't sure if my profile was competitive enough. I am rethinking the timelines and will decide soon.

Thanks for adding to the discussion. Helps much.

Hi there jayaramgok,

Picking up the baton here from my Admissionado colleague! Based on the goals that you've stated, I would definitely say that an MBA would be a better fit than an MS in Data Science. The latter is more likely to put you on a technical track, particularly given how Big Data is rapidly evolving as a common theme across sectors (not just technology, but retail, entertainment, financial services, etc. as well). Employers are more likely to pigeonhole job applicants with a data science degree in analytical roles that certainly offer advancement but are less likely to offer broad-brush general management opportunities like the ones you describe in your long-term goals.

Have you considered gaining a few more years of work experience and then applying for a part-time MBA instead? That would allow you to skirt the age issue (the tricky thing is that your age isn't aligned with your years of work experience, which is a concern) but still gain much of the knowledge, networking, and skills that an MBA would provide. In the long term, if you're interested in running and growing companies, an MBA will be a much better fit for you than a data science master's.

Best,

Doris

Hey Doris,

Thanks much for the reply.

Great points, I agree with you. In regards to part-time, I did consider those programs as well. Still, I feel that Schools in the US (and other International B schools) provide a better holistic MBA curriculum and experience, and I am not entirely certain if I can find that from schools here. Another option would be to do an MS in Data Science first, followed by a part-time MBA later on. However, this might be an expensive track. I recall many consultants advising me against this, citing it quite long-winded. On that front, I am also considering applying for the 2021 intake so that I would be 32 years at the time of enrollment. Understanding my fit for schools/schools I can target for my profile is another issue I am facing. Do you think you could shed some light on this?
