I'm desperate to know how my resume stacks up against everyone else. I'm trying to get into a top 10 MBA.
I'm a couple years away from applying to Business School. That is when my service commitment is up in the US Air Force. But I know with absolute clarity that that is what I want to do so I am preparing now. So unfortunately some of this is more of a projection rather than the current reality.
I am an American, Caucasian male who will be 26 at the time of my application.
I majored in Finance from a state school with a 3.55 GPA.
My commissioning source was Air Force ROTC through my University.
I spent my senior year of college volunteering with children at a very famous cancer research facility.
I like to blog about business and finance in my spare time.
I'm working on my GMAT but I'm projecting 700 conservatively.
At this moment I am applying to get into Indiana's Masters degree Finance program so hopefully I will have that done by the time apply.
I am an Aircraft Maintenance Officer and will be 26 with had 4 years of work experience at the time of application.
When I apply I will be in the last months of being a 1st Lieutenant. If I am accepted I will have been a Captain for several months before attending.
My biggest concern is my job. It should be a strength but I'm just not quite sure I can get the boards to connect with what I do. Even my relatives hear maintenance and think I'm turning a wrench. I'm not. I'm an administrator. My job is to strategically push maintenance so that we can support the flying schedule. I have to know a lot about maintenance, logistics, contracting and acquisitions to be good at my job. I am directly responsible for 200 people and leading them in every aspect from their work lives to their personal lives. By the time I'm 26 that number will be well over 1000. I don't think too many people can put that on their resume. I'm doing this all as a 23 year old. I was told over and over before I volunteered for this job that there is no better opportunity to lead in the entire Air Force than in maintenance. That's why I volunteered for it.
I'm just afraid that when they hear Maintenance they'll think I'm some good ole boy who joined because he likes to work on his truck.
I know that was lengthy but your help is IMMENSELY appreciated!
Also could you address the impact of applying as a 1st Lt vs a Captain,
and how important it would be to have that Masters degree finished by the time I apply. Right now I'm scheduled to finish it right before round 1 with no room to spare.
Thanks!
