Most Important Sentence Correction Topics?

Hi Everyone,

I am studying for the verbal portion of the GMAT and have my test in a month.

I don’t think I will be able to cover all of the SC topics in the time left.

What are the most important SC topics? If you had to pick chapters from the MGMAT SC book, which would you choose?

My very personal list is:

1)parallelism
2)modifiers
3)logical prediction (comparisons, verb tenses,...)
4)take a look at what GMAT prefers: I am referring to LIKE vs AS or IF vs WHETHER and similar

I left out basic things like subject verb agreement and pronouns. BTW I think that a month should be enough to cover the whole book, if you have already studied RC and CR.

Unfortunately sentence correction requires you to know most of the rules to get correct answers becuase there are no rules that are considered easier or harder and many questions contain multiple rule errors. However, by focusing on six of the main errors you can get the most for your studying.

Those six are Pronoun, Parallelism, Subject/verb, Misplaced modifier, Idiom and Verb tense. If I had to eliminate one it woudl be idiom simply becuase those need to be memorized most of the time.

The rules are actually not that hard to study on their own, it is how you study them that is important. Learning the key words that indicate a certain error is being used and then knowing what parts of the sentence to separate out to determine the correct answer is key to doing your best on sentence correction.

I would recommend working through the entire strategy guide, which includes all the major SC topics. You should be able to get through the guide in a week or two. If you are worried about taking too much time working through the strategy guide, only do half of the practice problems (or perhaps every third problem). After a few weeks, take a free practice exam (https://www.manhattangmat.com/free-gmat.cfm) and review the results to see how you performed in each of the grammatical categories (ie parallelism, modifiers, etc.). Spend the rest of your practice time working through those categories where you are struggling.
