Hello everyone!!! Thank you all for your support and queries after reading my earlier post related to preparation of Quant section.

As demanded by some, I am today making an effort to share my experience for preparing Verbal section.

So I started my prep for GMAT with Quant. It took about a week for my order of Verbal Books to reach me. I was advised to order Manhattan series for Sentence Correction and Critical Reasoning by none other than my God sent mentor, Abhinav.

As posted earlier, I took an official mock before starting my prep to get a baseline. My score was 620 with V27. I couldn't attempt the last 9 questions due to paucity of time. I realised that while attempting questions I was shuttling back and forth between question text and options to only realise that I am in a thick soup. After a while, I was mentally exhausted to connect with the question and that became a vicious cycle, I couldn't get out of.

My order of Manhattan material reached me finally. I was now studying Quant and Verbal in equal proportions everyday. I would go through a topic each in Sentence Correction and Critical Reasoning and try to make notes. It took me a few weeks to complete the books. Oh and yes, I was delivered my Official Guides (all three), but those books had to wait till I was reasonably sure of my theory.

I started attempting the questions in Official Guide, may be 5 to 7 at a time. I started with the Easy ones and increased the level upon completion of a subsection. All this while, I was revising the study material of Manhattan. In fact, I revised for the second time. Having nothing left to explore in theory, I considered myself to be well versed with what I read and thus, attempted the Official Mock #2 after 45 days of my #1.

To say the least, the score wasn't encouraging. I got a 660 with V32. Abhinav and me were perplexed. After a week I subscribed to verbal online course of E-gmat.

I started going through the lessons in already laid out sequence, devoting equal time for all the subsections.

It was a very slow and steady process. Frankly, I came across concepts, rules and analogies that I was unaware of until that time. The section on tenses, modifiers and idioms was elaborated in a comprehensive way. Anything I didn't understand, I would go back to my mentor and he would help me out very promptly.

Slowly, my accuracy on Official Guide questions started improving. I was connecting well with the questions. I was able to understand not only why an option was correct but also otherwise, I.e. why were the others wrong.

Once started, I stuck to the routine for next 60 days. I tried not to bombard myself with questions. This was mainly because I accepted the fact that I am unaware of the basics of the grammar. Also, I was taking too long to mark my answer. I needed a clear understanding of concepts so that reading and answering became second nature to me (it didn't really ever happen!!! :-P). What I am trying to get at is that I gave myself enough rest and time to internalize the concepts. Everytime I increased the daily dose of questions because of temptation, my accuracy would go down acutely.

So I sit for my Official Mock number 3. I felt different while attempting problems. But to my ill luck, I still had to leave last 4 questions unanswered. I got a 730 with V40. I simply continued on the path which I was treading to again give a mock after 10 days. This time it was 760 with V42.

I sat for my GMAT after 2 weeks of my last mock. I got a 700 with V38. I attempted again after a gap of 3 weeks to get 760 with V41. Luck had a huge role to play. Believe me. The truth is that I skipped the question everytime I found myself going into that vicious cycle I described earlier. I had to rush in the last 8 questions and attempted all of them with half the attention they deserved. What can I say, God was kind that hour.

Takeaways:
1. E-gmat was much more comprehensive compared to Manhattan. Having said that, there were itsy bitsy topics in Manhattan, totally absent in e-gmat.
2. It was a very long journey. I realised very soon that I didn't know the language. A lot of patience was required to keep going.
3. Mind needs its share of breathers. In verbal, every question and in it, every option is important. After such meticulous analysis, my mind would get tired within no time. I just accepted that as a fact and kept my pace on check.
4. Luck. Plays a big role. If it ain't your day, it ain't your day. There were days when my accuracy was just 25% in easy-medium segments.

As earlier, I am writing this post in a hurry by squeezing out some time between my meetings. Frankly, I myself see some grammar mistakes. Not all would be edited when you see this post. Pls don't judge me. Hahahhahahhaha!!!

As before, pls feel free to drop me a message here or on Facebook if you think I could be of any help in this journey of yours. Name is Dr Rohit Singh Malan.

All the very best !!!

hey. I suggest you make a countdown timer map for questions. It should prompt you to know how far you are on every 10 min interval.
All the very best. Pls post your score.

Congratulations for the Great Score 760!

I am presently facing the following issues and unable to get out of it:
- Time shortage at the end, always missing/blindly guessing 5-6 questions.
- Mostly one section is going good in CATs. either V or Q and never both.

Accuracy - Time Management is big problem, I am practicing as much as i can but this road has too many high speed barriers for me. 3 weeks to go for final exam and i need to finalize my approach.
Please suggest if any approach or material could be helpful.

Thanks.

Completing manhattan left me wanting in the tests. I was getting the impression that I did not internalize the concepts well whereas the problem was that there were concepts I wasn't aware of.

Hope it helps. All the very best. :)
