Hi,

Please help me in taking the right decision.

I took the GMAT test yesterday and it went disastrous (670-50Q ,31V). Although I accepted the score at the test center, i'll be retaking the exam next month as i was aiming 730+. (scored 750 on the last Gmat official mock and the least score was 690 at any mock test i gave)
Need help in deciding whether should i cancel my score online and then retake it or should i keep this score and then retake it ??

Any help would be appreciated. TIA

670 isn't disastrous. Agreed, it is not outstanding, but it is ok. The good thing is that you showed your Quant ability with the Q50. Now focus hard on Verbal (while practicing Quant on the side). Ensure that you don't stumble in Quant next time. But just in case you do drop by a few points, you would still have the Q50 on your score report. Though schools do not mix two scores but it is probably nicer to have a Q50 on your score report even if it is from a previous test.

What are your weak spots in Verbal?

Just retake it and do better. Schools often take the highest score and it's always good to have that backup score, especially when you show improvement. Re-taking and scoring the same doesn't really show any story, but an improvement makes you stand out. To do so, however, you have to make sure you're well prepared with a plan for the 2nd time. Remember, an incremental gain doesn't increase by chance, you'll have to fundamentally be better at solving GMAT questions. Focus on how you can level up your thinking process.

Hi,

First Off, Thank you for your quick reply.
Yes, you are right. Incremental gain doesn't increase by chance, and this coming month i'll be focusing on fundamentals thoroughly.
But when I contemplate about question- Why I couldn't perform at the test center? I feel the only reason was i got nervous as I was not able to solve starting 4-5 questions in my verbal section, leading to overall performance degradation( Nervousness took a toll on me).

Hi Karishma,

First off, Thank you for your quick reply.

In verbal, my weakest area is SC. I prepared hard for it and I was improving day by day. But I believe I need to focus more on my overall timing as during exam i found myself short of time( Though i was never short of time in any mock I gave).

Hi Shivam2190,

First off, a 670/Q50 is a strong score (it's above the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools that you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

ask-admission-consultants-124/

When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:

When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?

Hi,
First Off, thank you for your quick reply.

I Just want you to know that i belong to the most competitive pool( Indian , Male , IT) so i believe 670 wouldn't help me getting the schools which I'm aiming for.

Answering your questions:
1-Yes I took ENTIRE CAT each time.
2- Yes I took at home.
3-No, the last mock I gave was 1 week prior to the GMAT exam.
4-No, I followed the GMAT test center rules.
5-NO, When i gave the mocks, the questions were new to me.

Hi Shivam2190,

I have a few follow-up questions about the lead-up to Test Day and Test Day itself:

1) What did you do in the 3 days before your GMAT?
2) How did you sleep the night before your Test?
3) How long was the ride to the Test Center from your home?
4) Were there any distractions at the facility or during the Test?
5) What did you do during the two 8-minute breaks?
6) Did you finish any sections early?
7) Did you have to rush to finish any sections (and guess on questions just to finish on time)?

It's possible that you just had a "bad day"; but if we can figure all of this out quickly, then you wouldn't necessarily have to wait too long to retest (if you choose to).

Hi,

Answering to your questions:-

1-last 3 days i just went through the questions which I bookmarked and revised certain concepts.
2-I slept well..though i usually prefer to give my exam in afternoon, i gave my gmat at 9 AM .
3-Ride was about half an hour.
4-No. Ambiance at the test center was calm.
5-I just went to the washroom and washed my face and thats it. Now I think next time i better take some choclate or fruit to eat in that break.
6-quants I normally finish 10-15 minutes prior the alloted time and same happened during the GMAT.
7-Yes..i was short in time during the test..so i had to rush through last 10 questions in verbal.

Hi Shivam! thought I would take this opportunity to mention that our sentence correction book Sentence Correction Nirvana is perhaps the only book that offers a score improvement guarantee, and is especially designed for non-native speakers.

After reading the book twice (yes! it's an academic book, and so must be read twice in all seriousness, to reinforce the concepts), you will start looking forward to solving SC questions!

The book is available on Flipkart and Amazon.in. You might want to refer to these sites, to also read testimonials of how readers have benefited.

See here how Mohit, who scored 750 on GMAT, vouches for our book.

If you want to sample a chapter before deciding to go ahead with our book, please PM me your mail-id (along with the chapter that you would like to sample) and I will be happy to send that chapter to you by mail. In addition, the entire Grammar section of the book is also available for free preview at pothi.

Hi Shivam2190,

GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your current ability level is probably around "700" or so (meaning that you scored at the higher end of your range during practice and the lower end of that range on Test Day). To that end, we really have to 'nitpick' how you took your practice CATs compared to the exact variables that you faced on Test Day. Test Day is a rather specific 'event' - the details are specific and they matter, so you have to train as best as you can for all of them. The more realistic you can make your CATs, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. You've already admitted that you were used to taking your CATs in the afternoon, so suddenly shifting to a morning Exam could have thrown off your performance (and having to rush through the last 10 questions in the Verbal section would certainly make it difficult to score at a high level in that section). This is all meant to say that if you do choose to retest, then you have to be more focused about how you take your practice CATs (and making them match the exact parameters that you'll face on Test Day). Some Verbal-centric study with some new practice materials might also help.
