Hello,
I recently purchased my ESR from mba.com and to my surprise I only scored 26% percentile in Reading Comprehension (70% on CR and 51% on SC). Before I purchased the ESR I thought I scored lower on SC which caused my Verbal score to be relatively low (I am a non-native btw), however it turns out that RC is what is dragging my score down. In my youth I always scored relatively high on standardized tests in the sub-section Reading Comprehension ("begrijpend lezen"), note however that these tests were on paper (tests on paper allow me to mark key sentences) and in my native language. Also, when practicing with the OG guide I didn't struggle with RC at all.
When practicing OG Guide questions I recorded my errors in the GMAT club error log, which resulted in this % error log (over 400 verbal questions answered):
CR Easy 81% 19%
CR Medium 68% 32%
CR Hard 69% 31%
CR Very Hard 56% 44%
RC Easy 89% 11%
RC Medium 71% 29%
RC Hard 50% 50%
RC Very Hard
SC Easy 78% 22%
SC Medium 42% 58%
SC Hard 65% 35%
SC Very Hard 45% 55%
I made the error of making notes on test/passage in the OG-guide, which is something I have always used in the past (heavily relied upon) but is not available on the real GMAT test (can't write on screen
). Take the 'mark-on-test' ability away and my RC ability drops significantly (to only 26% percentile). So, does anyone have tips on how to improve on-screen RC? I am struggling with the balancing act of saving time without taking notes and taking my time to write (efficient and effective) notes on a separate piece of paper. With tests on paper I am used to mark key sentences, but on the GMAT I don't have the time to write key sentences down (or even parts of them).

The first thing you need to do is practice as many computer-based RC questions as you can, whether those questions are from official practice GMATs or even from online versions of the OG. By practicing on the computer, you'll get better acclimated to test-day conditions. As you practice these passages, you may have to tinker a bit until you find a method of note-taking that works well for you. Remember, the purpose of taking notes is not really to refer back to them when answering questions, but rather to ensure that you are actively reading as you go through the passage. In other words, by taking some shorthand notes, you force yourself to paraphrase sentences in your own words and in turn stay engaged in the passage. Once you get some practice under your belt, I imagine that you’ll feel better. Certainly, if you have any further questions, feel free to reach out.
